Virginia Tech reinstates Adonis Alexander and Houshun Gaines

Adonis Alexander and Houshun Gaines are back on the Virginia Tech football team, though the two will still miss time in 2016.

Virginia Tech announced Wednesday the two players had been reinstated to the team following their indefinite suspensions in April. However, both Alexander and Gaines will miss the team’s season-opening game vs. Liberty on September 3. Per the statement, Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente “indicated that if they continue to follow the parameters set for them that they would not miss any further contests.”

The players were suspended this spring when they were arrested for marijuana possession. Gaines, a defensive end, was also charged with underage possession of alcohol at the time of their arrest on April 26.

Alexander, a cornerback, became a key contributor for Virginia Tech’s defense in 2015. He had 55 tackles and four interceptions as cornerback Kendall Fuller played in only three games. Gaines was a redshirt freshman in 2015.
