Last weekend was not a good pick’em weekend if you picked teams to beat FCS squad. The FCS won eight games last week and if you were on any of those games, you probably pocketed a pretty penny.
Unfortunately, we didn’t pick any FCS games last week, but we did go 7-3 in our first pick’em of the college football season. This weekend, there doesn’t appear to be a whole lot of upsets out there. In fact, we only picked two. The rest of our picks aren't exactly sexy. we stayed away from Georgia-South Carolina and Notre Dame-Michigan, but hey, winning is winning no matter which teams you pick.
Here’s what we like for Week 2:
Penn State (-24) vs. Eastern Michigan: The debut of Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg was as good as anticipated and he’ll gain even more confidence against an Eastern Michigan team that has won just 10 games in the past four years.
Western Kentucky (+13) at Tennessee: Western Kentucky continues to be our upset special. After handling Kentucky last week, the Hilltoppers will have the confidence to go to Rocky Top and make this a game if not win outright.
Oregon (-23) at Virginia: Virginia should have been beaten handily by BYU last week, but a few offensive gaffes by the Cougars cost them the game. Oregon shouldn't have those offensive woes. Look for the Ducks to roll and keep their No. 2 spot in the national rankings.
Baylor (-27) vs. Buffalo: Buffalo is getting a lot of credit for covering against Ohio State last week, but Baylor is a much better offensive team and will pounce on the Bulls early. The Bears should cover this easily.
Tulane (-6) vs. South Alabama: This isn’t exactly a sexy game, but Tulane is wildly undervalued here. South Alabama lost to FCS Southern Utah and Tulane’s defense looked awfully good last week. And let’s not forget the Green Wave are led by Nick Montana, who is trying to revitalize his collegiate career.
Wyoming (-28) vs. Idaho: Wyoming’s strong performance against Nebraska last weekend was not a fluke. This is a good Cowboys team led by a strong quarterback in Brett Smith. Not only will Wyoming roll this week, look for it as a darkhorse in the Mountain West.
Nebraska (-28) vs. Southern Miss: Nebraska is not as bad as it looked last week, but Southern Miss is. Remember, this is a Golden Eagles team that did not win a game last season. The Huskers had a scare last weekend, but they right the ship in a big way this week.
Colorado State (+10) at Tulsa: Of all the games on the list, this is the one we’re a little dicey about. Colorado State showed some good things last week, but still lost to a woeful Colorado team. Still, they at least had some fight, which is more than we can say for a Tulsa team that got whooped handily by Bowling Green.
Minnesota (-14.5) at New Mexico State: We were a little weary of Minnesota against UNLV last week, but the Gophers showed they’re a lot better than their 2012 version. New Mexico State, sadly, is exactly the same. I’m not in love with this line, but if you buy the hook, it should work out fine.
Colorado (-13.5) vs. Central Arkansas: I know, I know, Colorado is turrrrrble, but maybe not as bad as we all thought. Quarterback Connor Wood and receiver Paul Richardson had a fantastic connection last week and if Colorado State couldn’t stop it, Central Arkansas certainly can’t. For the first time in several years, I like the Buffies in a romp.
BONUS PICK
Sam Houston at Texas A&M (OVER 69.5): This is probably a suckers bet, but I couldn’t shake it. A&M has a great offense and a terrible defense that is still without a bunch of starters. Sam Houston State is a fantastic FCS team that has played in the national title game each of the last two years. While the Bearkats won’t win, they’ll put up points, making this a high-scoring affair.
