Just a day after Nebraska coach Bo Pelini held nothing back in the press conference following a disappointing home loss to Iowa in which he said “if they want to fire me, go ahead,” Nebraska athletic director Shawn Eichort issued a statement regarding Pelini’s job.
The statement (via the Omaha World-Herald), in full, reads:
“My approach has always been to not comment publicly about our coaches until their full seasons are complete, as I strongly believe it is unfair and counter to best practices. However, given the volume of unfounded speculation and conjecture about our head football coach, I want to reaffirm what I have said many times since I have arrived at the University of Nebraska — that I positively respect, appreciate and support our football student-athletes, coaches and staff, as we do everyone in the Husker family. We very much look forward to our upcoming bowl game and Coach Pelini continuing to lead our program in the future.”
Those words do not sound like the words of an athletic director who is going to fire his head coach. Pelini’s job appears to be safe at least through the team’s bowl game next month, but the statement certainly does not guarantee anything beyond that.

In six years at Nebraska, Pelini has a 56-24 overall record and we would be surprised if Pelini does not grace the sideline for Nebraska in its season opener next year.
