Though he has only coached the Tigers for 12 games, Auburn believes Gus Malzahn is the man for the job long-term.

A day before the Tigers take on Missouri in the SEC title game, Auburn announced Friday that it has given Malzahn a six-year contract extension that gives Malzahn with a base salary of $3.85 million next year. The contract includes a $250,000 raise for each subsequent year until the final year in 2019.

"As I've said before, we want Coach Malzahn to be at Auburn for a long time,” athletic director Jay Jacobs said in a release. "The new contract includes a raise and extension and is our statement that Auburn is committed to Coach Malzahn for the long haul."

Malzahn has led the Tigers to an 11-1 regular season and SEC title game just a year after Auburn went 3-9 in 2012.

“While this season has been remarkable, I'm equally excited about the future of our program under his leadership. The future of Auburn football is very bright. I couldn't be more pleased with our student-athletes and our coach," Jacobs added.

After a long high school coaching career in Arkansas, Malzahn spent time as an assistant at Tulsa and Auburn before landing the head coaching job at Arkansas State. After one year at Arkansas State, Malzahn was hired to lead the Auburn program in December 2012.
