The career of Mississippi State quarterback Tyler Russell is officially over.
The Bulldogs announced that Russell had surgery to fix a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder on Tuesday. Russell, a senior, will not be available for the Liberty Bowl, which would have been his final game as a Bulldog.
Russell’s senior season was wrought with injury. Early in the season, he missed three games with a concussion and another with an ankle injury. The shoulder injury cost him the regular season finale against Ole Miss.
Russell started 22 games, including every game in 2012 and five in 2013.
Sophomore Dak Prescott and freshman Damian Williams will be the Bulldogs options against Rice in the Liberty Bowl, though Prescott has been battling a nerve injury in his throwing shoulder.
Russell finishes a strong career at Mississippi State. He’s first in school history in touchdown passes (42) and passing efficiency (137.3). He finished second in passing yards (5,441), pass completions (410) and touchdowns responsible for (45).
