Connecticut announced Thursday that former Notre Dame defensive coordinator Bob Diaco would be its next head coach.

Diaco has been at Notre Dame since 2010 and last season received the Broyles Award, which goes to the nation's top assistant. His Notre Dame defense helped get the Irish to the BCS Championship game before the Irish lost to Alabama.

He signed a five-year deal worth $1.5 million a season.

UConn fired Paul Pasqualoni after an 0-4 start and the team was coached by interim coach T.J. Weist the rest of the season. UConn finished the season 3-9.

This season, Notre Dame gave up 22.9 points per game and 377 yards a game. Last season, the Irish led the country in points per game at 10.3 and gave up 288 yards a game.
