Iowa State has hired a former national coach of the year to be its offensive coordinator.

The school announced Monday that head coach Paul Rhoads has hired former Kansas head coach Mark Mangino to run the Cyclones’ offense. He spent the 2013 season as the assistant head coach and tight ends coach at Youngstown State, his alma mater, after taking three years off from coaching.

“I am beyond thrilled to welcome Coach Mangino to the Cyclone football family,” Rhoads said. “He has an imaginative offensive mind, an ability to play to his players’ strengths, a track record of winning and a tremendous familiarity with the Big 12 Conference. In terms of calling plays and executing a game plan, he is top shelf. He has learned from a ‘Who’s Who’ of college coaches, effectively led his own championship program and is respected throughout the coaching ranks.”

Mangino served as the head coach at Kansas from 2002-09 and was an assistant at Kansas State from 1991-98 and Oklahoma from 1999-01. He took over a Jayhawk program that had had six straight losing seasons.

After winning just two games in his first year, Mangino led a turnaround that culminated in an Orange Bowl victory five years later. Overall, Kansas went 50-48 under Mangino and played in four bowl games – winning three.

Iowa State is coming off a 3-9 season.
