Florida State players have brought Jameis Winston’s swag up

For as charismatic and put together as Florida State quarterback Jamies Winston appears on the field, his teammates would tell you he’s a mess off it – at least when it comes to his wardrobe.

Several of Winston’s teammates have taken the Heisman-winning quarterback under their wing and tried to teach him how to dress like the star quarterback he is.

“He’s never been a big dresser,” receiver Kelvin Benjamin said. “I guess a lot of guys from Alabama they’re not really big on the stylish, so, just us being from Florida and us being from down south, we know what’s hot out there. So, we help him with that a lot.”

Added offensive lineman Bobby Hart: “He’s from Alabama, so he’s kinda country.”

Winston, who is from Bessemer, Ala., has used his teammates to help him dress since the season started when he was approached more for autographs and photos. But he needed his teammates most prior to the Heisman Trophy ceremony when he realized he had nothing to wear.

“He don’t have any swag,” receiver Rashad Greene said of his quarterback. “We had to help him get a suit for the Heisman. We had to take him to Men’s Wearhouse and we had to show him how to color coordinate with the shoes and stuff like that. It wasn’t hard because he’s not a picky person, but he definitely needed help.”

Even though the redshirt freshman has embraced his teammates' suggestions, Hart said he still has a lot to learn.

“He’ll pick out something and we’ll be like, ‘No Jameis, don’t wear that,’” Hart said. “He’s come a long way now. He’s got on nice sneakers now, a nice little outfit. Me and Rashad, we try to make sure he looks good.”

But trying to make Winston look good does come with a price. Most of his teammates hate going out with him, even someplace as simple as the grocery store, because of the mass of fans that approach them or follow them around.

Hart said he’s picked Winston up from his house and been followed by fans to their destination. He said some of the intense fandom started after the season opener against Pittsburgh, but definitely intensified after Winston won the Heisman Trophy. Hart said if they go to the grocery store together, he usually leaves Winston in the car. And when he returns, the car is surrounded by fans.

“I’ll want to go out and people always be hitting me up in Tallahassee,” Winston said. “It’s not that bad, they’re just always complaining.”

Winston, does, however, appreciate his teammates’ sacrifices and their devotion to making him look presentable.

“The Trio has definitely brought my swag up,” Jameis Winston said. “Not just the Trio, but Bobby Hart, my right tackle, he’s really brought my swag up. It’s always good for a quarterback to have a good relationship with his teammates. We’re supposed to be able to hang out and do anything.”
