There was plenty of movement in the assistant coaching world on Wednesday. Most notably, Michigan fired offensive coordinator Al Borges.

Borges’ offense averaged 32.2 points per game for the 7-6 Wolverines, but the team only averaged 125.7 rushing yards per game – 102nd in the nation. Michigan lost five of its last six games to end the year including games against Michigan State and Nebraska when the Wolverines scored just six and 13 points, respectively.

“Decisions like these are never easy,” Michigan coach Brady Hoke said. “I have a great amount of respect for Al as a football coach and, more importantly, as a person. I appreciate everything he has done for Michigan for the past three seasons.”

Prior to joining the staff at Michigan in 2011, Borges was a part of Hoke’s staff at San Diego State in 2009 and 2010.

Elsewhere, the Austin American Statesman is reporting that new Texas coach Charlie Strong is expected to name Louisville defensive coordinator Vance Bedford, a former Texas defensive back, to the same position at Texas.

Bedford has coached with Strong since they were both defensive assistants at Florida in 2008. He coached defensive backs for the Gators before becoming the defensive coordinator at Louisville in 2010.

In the Pac-12, Cal coach Sonny Dykes announced that defensive coordinator Andy Buh will be re-assigned to a position coach and that defensive tackles coach Barry Sacks and defensive backs coach Randy Stewart will not return in 2014.

“Defense is a critical part of the equation in winning championships,” Dykes said. “I owe it to our student-athletes to provide them with the best conditions for success and I am committed to hiring coaches who will develop our players to their fullest potential.”

The Cal defense gave up 45.9 points per game in a 1-11 season.

Finally, Hawaii coach Norm Chow announced the hiring of Kevin Clune as defensive coordinator. Clune was the linebackers coach at Utah State for the past five seasons.

“I am honored and excited to be a part of Coach Norm Chow’s staff and the Hawaii football program,” Klune said. “I look forward to the new challenges that this opportunity will bring.”

Hawaii’s defense allowed 38.8 points per game in a 1-11 season.
