Now that Doug Nussmeier is heading to Michigan, the possibility of Lane Kiffin as Alabama's offensive coordinator doesn't seem all that farfetched.
CBS Sports reports that the former USC coach is scheduled to interview with Alabama for its offensive coordinator position. That's the position that Nussmeier held for two seasons until he was hired at Michigan on Wednesday.
However, Kiffin is not the only candidate. From CBS:
Kiffin will visit Tuscaloosa for the interview but won't be alone in the running for the job. A long list of NFL suitors should be involved for a coveted job to replace Doug Nussmeier, who is now Michigan's offensive coordinator.
Kiffin makes sense as a possibility because his teams have never run an up-tempo spread offense. An offense pushing to get as many plays in a game as possible doesn't seem like it'd be high on Nick Saban's list of priorities. Plus, Kiffin helped the Crimson Tide evaluate its offense in December and Saban called Kiffin a "really good offensive coach."
With the NFL coaching carousel still in full swing, it'll be fascinating to see what NFL assistants have interest in the Alabama job.
Kiffin was fired from USC after the Trojans lost 62-41 at Arizona State in September. He served as USC's coach for a little more than three years and had a career record of 28-15. In his final bowl game appearance in the 2012 Sun Bowl, USC lost to Georgia Tech.
Before serving as USC's head coach, Kiffin was the head coach for the Oakland Raiders and the University of Tennessee. He was co-offensive coordinators at USC under Pete Carroll with Steve Sarkisian, who is now the coach of the Trojans.
