After being suspended by coach Dana Holgorsen, quarterback Ford Childress is not a student at West Virginia for the upcoming semester.
The Charleston Daily Mail reports that Childress is no longer a part of the team after he informed the school he wouldn't enroll for the spring. Earlier this year, Childress was suspended for the entire semester.
Childress was one of three West Virginia quarterbacks who started games in 2013. He was 1-1 as a starter while splitting time with Clint Trickett and Paul Millard. After redshirting in 2012, Childress started against Georgia State and Maryland. But after tearing his pec in the Mountaineers 37-0 loss to the Terrapins, he didn't play again the rest of the season.
His absence means that Millard may be the only quarterback with starting experience available for spring practices. Trickett, who transferred from Florida State before 2013, is having shoulder surgery. Trickett started seven games and ended up as West Virginia's most prolific quarterback. He threw for 1,605 yards, seven touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Millard started the first two games of the season and saw spot duty the rest of the season. With both he and Trickett set to be seniors in 2014, Childress was viewed as West Virginia's quarterback of the future.
The inability of the three quarterbacks to separate themselves throughout the season was a major reason for the Mountaineers' struggles. West Virginia finished the season 4-8 and was just 2-7 in the Big 12. And those struggles are why Holgorsen is entering 2014 as a coach on the hot seat. A quarterback could go a long way to saving his job.
