Steve Spurrier’s trolling continues to be at the top of its game.
While speaking to a crowd at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, S.C., on Saturday afternoon - a crowd that included several recruits – Spurrier took time to boast about the Gamecocks No. 4 ranking in the final AP poll while taking a couple jabs at in-state rival Clemson.
“It’s not a three-year streak, not four-year. It’s a five-year (streak),” Spurrier said. “We’ve been fortunate to beat that big, orange team from upstate about five straight years — pretty convincingly.
“… We have learned life is a lot nicer when you’re in the top 10. Some people call the top 10 the Promised Land of college football, and we’re living there right now. We’re going to try our best to keep living there.”
Clemson finished No. 8 in the AP Poll after defeating Ohio State in the Orange Bowl. South Carolina didn’t play in a BCS bowl, but defeated Wisconsin in the Capital One Bowl to notch its third consecutive 11-win season.
South Carolina has finished in the top 10 of the AP poll in each of the last three years. Clemson’s ranking was the highest in the AP poll for the program since finishing No. 8 in 1982.
Of course, the trolling didn’t stop there. Spurrier also took a jab at Clemson receiver Sammy Watkins, who decided to leave school early and enter the NFL draft, as he compared him to Gamecocks receiver Bruce Ellington.
“He’s caught three touchdowns against Clemson in his career. That’s three more than their first-round pick,” Spurrier said.
If you’re keeping track at home, Spurrier has now used two public speeches in 2014 to troll Clemson and we’re not even out of the first month of the year. However, with national signing day coming up and Clemson’s class ranked well ahead of South Carolina’s, Tigers’ coach Dabo Swinney might be able to get in a few jabs of his own.
