With his playing career likely over, former NFL running back Jahvid Best has moved into coaching.

GoldenBearReport.com reported Best's addition to the staff and said that he'd likely be used as a student assistant. Best is returning to Cal to finish his degree. He declared for the NFL draft after his junior season in 2009.

Best was a first-round pick of the Detroit Lions in 2010, but his NFL career was cut short after two seasons because of concussions.

At Cal, Best followed NFL running backs Marshawn Lynch and Justin Forsett as the school's bellcow back. As a sophomore in 2008, he averaged over 8 yards per carry and scored 15 touchdowns while racking up 1,580 rushing yards. As a junior, he missed four games because of two concussions and finished with 867 rushing yards.

He was the 30th overall pick by the Lions in the 2010 Draft. After a totaling over 1,000 yards rushing and receiving in his rookie season, he suffered another concussion in the second game of the 2011 season and played just six games that season.

Despite participating in the Lions' 2012 offseason activities, Best wasn't cleared to play football for the upcoming season and the Lions parted ways with him in the summer of 2013.
