Less than two months after the Independence Bowl’s sponsorship relationship with AdvoCare came to an end, the bowl has found a new sponsor with some Louisiana flavor.
The Shreveport Times reported on Sunday that the Independence Bowl’s new sponsor will be Duck Commander – the duck call brand that has become famous on A&E’s Duck Dynasty.
A news conference will be held on Wednesday to announce a six-year agreement and the deal is reportedly “on par” with the $800,000 sponsorship the bowl had with Advocare.
“We can confirm that Independence Bowl Foundation officials are very excited about a partnership with Duck Commander,” Independence Bowl executive director Missy Setters told the Times.
Duck Commander is based in Monroe, La., about 100 miles from Shreveport – where the bowl is played at Independence Stadium. Phil Robertson, a former quarterback at Louisiana Tech, founded Duck Commander in 1972 and he and his family have become television stars based on the success and popularity of Duck Dynasty.
Robertson was Tech’s starting quarterback in 1966 and 1967 ahead of future NFL Hall of Famer Terry Bradshaw. He had a pretty good arm too. Check out the throw he makes around the :50 second mark here in his college debut in 1965 against Rice.
Robertson chose not play football as a senior in 1968, which gave Bradshaw the opportunity to claim the starting job. Both of their lives turned out pretty well, I’d say, and now Robertson’s company has its stamp on a bowl game in his home state.
