Beer could be coming to Darrell K. Royal Stadium in Austin.
According to Orangebloods.com and the Austin American-Statesman, beer sales will begin at Texas athletics events beginning this week with beer being sold at Wednesday night’s Texas-Baylor basketball game. Additionally, beer will also be available at Texas baseball, softball, and women’s basketball games.
Orangebloods is reporting that beer sales at events this spring, which will include the Texas spring football game on April 19, will be a “testing of the waters” for the 2014 football season. If everything goes well, that would open the door for beer sales at UT games this fall.
This has been in the works for the past couple years and former athletic director DeLoss Dodds said last spring that he and his staff discussed the possibility “constantly.” New athletic director Steve Patterson has picked up where Dodds left off and has reportedly been the “driving force” behind the beer sales.
Other schools like West Virginia, Iowa State and Minnesota have all made the choice to sell beer in recent years. There have been mixed results as Minnesota actually lost money with alcohol sales, but that was mainly because the university hired additional police and security and had to purchase other equipment.
With the tens of thousands of fans who attend every home game and the overpriced in-stadium beer costs, I could definitely see this being a positive venture for Texas.
