There's a reason why coaches hate the offseason — too much time to get into trouble.
And that's exactly what's happened at West Virginia after two defensive backs found themselves on the wrong side of the law Tuesday.
Darwin Cook and Terence Garvin were arrested and charged with shoplifting after being accused of stealing Gatorade and snacks from a local Sheetz. The incident occurred on April 12, but the two were arrested Tuesday after being identified on surveillance video.
Police say surveillance footage shows Garvin take a plastic Sheetz bag from behind the counter then Cook allegedly took three bottles of Gatorade and two bags of Doritos. Garvin can be seen swiping a couple of bags of pretzels. The two placed the items in the bag and left the store without paying.
According to the criminal complaint the incident happened on April 12th and arrest warrants for Garvin and Cook were obtained on April 25th.
Shoplifting merchandise worth less than $500 carries a maximum $250
Coach Dana Holgorsen told The Dominion Post that he was aware of the incident and that he was still gathering facts. He would take the appropriate action once all the facts were known.
You might remember Cook from the Orange Bowl. He's the player who ran back a fumble for a touchdown and then tackled Obie, the Orange Bowl mascot. He finished second on the team with 85 tackles. Garvin, who also made the highlight reel during the Orange Bowl, finished fourth on the team with 72 tackles.
The crazy and sad thing about this shoplifting incident is that both players get all the sports drink they want for free. The training staff makes it by the gallons. So why steal it?
