Two days after undergoing surgery to remove his appendix, Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer was in New York City to throw out the first pitch at the Yankees-Orioles game on Friday night.
Meyer showed no ill effects of his surgery, and fired off a solid pitch to Yankees catcher Brian McCann while wearing a No. 14 Meyer Yankees jersey.
Meyer was a 13th-round pick of the Atlanta Braves in the 1982 MLB Draft and played two years of minor league ball before getting back into football, so he knows what to do with a baseball in his hand.
After his pitch, Meyer spent the top of the fourth inning in the Yankees broadcast booth with John Sterling and Paul O’Neill and discussed the Buckeyes’ national championship run, among other things.
Meyer wasn’t the only Big Ten coach to throw out a first pitch at a Yankees game in recent weeks. Fresh off a win in the Pinstripe Bowl, Penn State coach James Franklin returned to Yankee Stadium to throw out the first pitch on April 28.
Franklin definitely had the better pitch (especially since he actually threw it from the mound), but we’ll give Meyer the benefit of the doubt since he’s a few days removed from surgery.
