Cardale Jones to start at QB for Ohio State vs. Western Michigan

Cardale Jones remains Ohio State's starting quarterback.

Urban Meyer made the announcement late Wednesday afternoon. Both Jones and J.T. Barrett played in the No. 1 Buckeyes' 20-13 win over Northern Illinois on Saturday. The Buckeyes play another MAC team, Western Michigan, in Week 4.

Neither quarterback separated himself from the other in the game. Jones was 4-9 passing for 36 yards and two interceptions before he was pulled for Barrett, who was 11-19 passing for 97 yards with a touchdown and an interception. If Jones struggles against Western Michigan, don't be surprised to see Barrett again.

Jones was the team's starting quarterback at the beginning of the season while Barrett, who started in 2014 until he broke his ankle against Michigan, paving the way for Jones to start Ohio State's final three games of 2014, also saw time in the first two games.

Jones is 26-46 passing for 334 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions through the first three games as the Buckeye offense has struggled at times. Turnovers got Virginia Tech back into the game (and a halftime lead) before the season-opener turned into a blowout win.

The offense wasn't spectacular against Hawaii in week two and many OSU fans were left frustrated in week three. The winning margin against the Huskies ended up being a defensive touchdown by linebacker Darron Lee on a 41-yard interception return.

Baylor suspends assistant Jeff Lebby for first half of game against Oklahoma

$

Baylor assistant Jeff Lebby will miss the first half of the Nov. 14 contest between Baylor and Oklahoma as a result of his appearance on the Tulsa sideline during last week’s Tulsa-Oklahoma contest.

The suspension was imposed by Baylor athletic director Ian McCaw and accepted by Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby, who publically reprimanded Lebby for his actions.

“The opportunity for Coach Lebby to scout a future opponent by being on the sideline of a conference member’s opponent is inconsistent with the principles and expectations of the Big 12 Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct Policy,” Bowlsby said in a statement. “I appreciate the action of Baylor athletics director Ian McCaw in addressing this matter and accept the University’s self-imposed penalty.”

Lebby and his wife, who is the daughter of Baylor head coach Art Briles, were on the Tulsa sideline thanks to credentials left for them by Tulsa head coach Philip Montgomery, a former Baylor offensive coordinator. Montgomery issued a statement taking responsibility for Lebby and his wife being on the sideline and said the couple was in town for a wedding. Montgomery said he also apologized to Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops.

However, since Baylor plays Oklahoma later in the year, Lebby’s presence on the sideline violated NCAA bylaw 11.6.1, which prohibits “off-campus, in-person scouting of future opponents.”

The Baylor self-imposed suspension and the conference reprimand does not mean Lebby has escaped punishment for the NCAA, which likely will review the matter.

Briles called the situation “embarrassing,” but noted that there was little scouting advantage to Lebby’s presence.

Lebby is a graduate of Oklahoma and spent four years as a student assistant on the football staff after he suffered a season-ending injury during his freshman year in 2002.

Lebby is the third Baylor coach to suffer some sort of suspension already this season. Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Kendal Briles (son of head coach Art Briles) and wide receivers coach Tate Wallis were suspended for the game against Lamar for an NCAA violation regarding recruiting.

Also, the Baylor football program is currently in the midst of an internal investigation by the university into the recruitment of Sam Ukwuachu, a former player who was recently convicted of raping a former female Baylor athlete.

Baylor was off last weekend and hosts Rice on Saturday.

Greyson Lambert's girlfriend will be crowned Miss Georgia at halftime Saturday

Georgia quarterback Greyson Lambert has had a pretty good week.

Against South Carolina last Saturday, Lambert broke an NCAA record by completing all but one of his 25 passes in a 52-20 win.

This Saturday, he’ll watch his girlfriend, Adeline Kenerly, be crowned Miss Georgia during the halftime of the Bulldogs' game against Alabama.

OK, he probably won’t see it live since he’ll be listening to a halftime speech from Mark Richt, but he’ll probably catch the recap following the game.

And hey, everyone will know that the gorgeous girl standing in the middle of the field at Sanford Stadium is going home with him.

Are we surprised that Lambert, a Virginia transfer who hasn’t been in town all that long, has already snagged himself a beauty queen? Not really. They seem to flock to SEC quarterbacks. Remember AJ McCarron and his now-wife Katherine Webb? She was Miss Alabama.

And quite honestly, Georgia quarterbacks have traditionally done well with the ladies, just ask Matthew Stafford and Aaron Murray.

Nathan Peterman is now Pitt's starting quarterback

PITTSBURGH, PA - SEPTEMBER 05: Nate Peterman #4 of the Pittsburgh Panthers throws a pass in the first half against the Youngstown State Penguins during the game at Heinz Field on September 5, 2015 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Jared Wickerham/Getty Images)Add Pitt to the list of teams making a change at quarterback.

Panthers head coach Pat Narduzzi said Wednesday on the ACC coaches teleconference that Nathan Peterman will start for the Panthers when ACC play begins on Oct. 3 at Virginia Tech.

Chad Voytik started the first two games of the season, but Peterman – a Tennessee transfer – was given the nod over Voytik last week at Iowa. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Narduzzi said Voytik will continue to see some time in a “specialized package,” but it’s Peterman’s job for the time being.

“We’ll continue to go forward with (Peterman) as the starting quarterback here,” Narduzzi said. “I think he’s earned that. I think Chad will continue to battle back.”

Voytik started every game last season but his playing time faded quickly in year one under Narduzzi. Peterman played most of the Panthers’ week two win over Akron and Voytik saw just two first half series last weekend against Iowa – both of which went three-and-out.

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

Narduzzi said the two would continue to challenge one another for the starting role as the season progresses.

“Don’t count (Chad) out now. He ain’t one to quit,” Narduzzi said. “I’m telling you, he’s the best competitor we have on this football team. He’s going to make Nathan better, I think Nathan’s made him better. I know it’s a high-profile position, but football’s football, and competition is competition. Chad understands that.”

Through three games, Peterman has thrown for 428 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions while completing 34-of-50 attempts while Voytik is 16-of-24 for 112 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Peterman, a redshirt junior, joined the Pitt program as a graduate transfer in the offseason. He redshirted in 2012 and played in a combined 11 games (two starts) for Tennessee in 2013 and 2014.

Voytik, a junior, threw for 2,233 yards, 16 touchdowns and seven interceptions while rushing for 466 yards and three more scores in 2014.

Pitt is 2-1 after last weekend’s last-second loss to Iowa.

Georgia DB Tramel Terry decides to transfer

(via UGA Athletics)Georgia took a hit to its secondary depth on Wednesday.

The program announced that redshirt sophomore defensive back Tramel Terry has decided to transfer. Terry said he’s leaving the Bulldogs to pursue more playing time elsewhere.

“I appreciate the opportunity provided by Georgia,” Terry said in a statement. “I have many friends here but believe I’ll have a better chance for playing time somewhere else.”

According to UGASports.com, Terry tore his ACL in an all-star game as a high school senior, prompting him to redshirt his first season on campus. He practiced as a wide receiver that season but moved to defensive back in 2014. He played in 10 games for the Bulldogs last year, registering 10 tackles and an interception.

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

Terry had played in each of the Bulldogs’ first three games this season, mainly on special teams.

“Playing time is important to every player and I understand the way he feels,” head coach Mark Richt said in a statement. “We wish him nothing but success at his next school and will assist any way we can in the process.”

Terry, a native of Goose Creek, S.C., was a four-star recruit in the 2013 class.

He told The State that UGA has not put any restrictions on his transfer and that he would “definitely want to look” at any opportunities to play in his home state.

North Dakota player dismissed after alleged theft while wearing jersey

A North Dakota player was dismissed from the team Monday after he allegedly stole two Nike accessories from a sporting goods store while wearing his jersey.

According to the Grand Forks Herald, Iverson was identified from surveillance footage inside the store.

Iverson was identified as the suspect in the incident after reporting party and Scheels employee Derek Trom discovered two opened, empty Nike Dri-fit bicep band packages, valued at about $8 each, according to the affidavit.

Trom reviewed video surveillance footage and discovered the items had been stolen. Trom said he observed Iverson, whom Trom identified because he was wearing a UND football jersey, open the packages, remove the items, conceal them in his pants pocket and leave the store without attempting to pay for the items, the affidavit says.

He was summoned to appear in court on October 2 on Wednesday. The accusations weren't public at the time of his dismissal. Iverson was a junior fullback. Losing your spot on the team because of two $8 armbands is brutal. Just pay for them if you want them so badly.

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

“We were made aware today of a legal situation involving Dustin Iverson and after reviewing all available information at this time, we have made the decision to dismiss him from the football team effective immediately for actions detrimental to our program and the university,” A statement from coach Bubba Schweigert said.

The Herald also said he was ID'd after he came back into the store on Friday.

He hadn't played in the first two games of 2015 because of a previous suspension and saw time in the third game of the season against North Dakota State.

Duke RB Jela Duncan expected to return Saturday

According to the Associated Press, Blue Devils head coach David Cutcliffe said Thursday that running back Jela Duncan will make his return to the field “somewhere in the first quarter” of the team’s ACC opener against No. 20 Georgia Tech.

Duncan missed all of 2014 due to an academic suspension, but was expected to see significant action for the Blue Devils this season. However, he suffered a partially torn pectoral muscle during preseason practice and hasn’t been able to play.

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

Duke has primarily gone with Shaun Wilson (42 carries, 179 yards, TD) and Shaquille Powell (32 carries, 166 yards) at running back this season. Cutcliffe said Thursday that it “remains to be seen” how much of a role Duncan will have in the offense.

Duncan combined for 1,115 yards and seven touchdowns in 2012 and 2013. He also had 32 catches for 212 yards and a touchdown.

Duke started the season 2-0, but lost to Northwestern 19-10 at home over the weekend.

Arizona State mascot sends Tempe councilman back to hospital

Arizona State's mascot accidentally re-injured a Tempe, Arizona, City Council member Friday night.

David Schapira was on the sidelines of ASU's 34-10 win over New Mexico on Friday. He's in the midst of recovering from back surgery and had a cane with him on the sidelines. However, Sparky, Arizona State's mascot, didn't realize that. And in a fit of playful celebration, Sparky jumped on Schapira's back.

Schapira said he was laughing until the pain of the muscle tear set in.

“I kind of laughed at first, then my expression changes to terror as I felt that pop,” Schapira told ABC 15.

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

According to Schapira, the tear has set his recovery back six weeks. After he doubled over in pain he carted off the field and taken to the hospital. He said he can't work because standing and sitting for long stretches of time is too painful.

He's not harboring a grudge, however. He said the person inside the Sparky costume felt bad about the injury and joked that he would wear a sign that said "fragile" next time he's near the mascot. Schapira is currently a grad student at ASU and has been a longtime fan.

The school said its sorry too and has offered to pay for his additional medical expenses as part of Sparky's joy.

"ASU sincerely apologizes for Sparky’s excessive exuberance at Friday night’s game. University officials have been in regular contact with Councilman Schapira since the incident and we have offered our fullest assistance and cooperation in getting his bills paid and we wish him a speedy recovery."

ARLINGTON, TX - SEPTEMBER 05: Corey Clement #6 of the Wisconsin Badgers runs the ball against the Alabama Crimson Tide during the Advocare Classic at AT&T Stadium on September 5, 2015 in Arlington, Texas. (Photo by Ronald Martinez/Getty Images)Wisconsin will be without its starting running back for the next 4-6 weeks.

The program announced Thursday that junior Corey Clement will undergo surgery to repair a sports hernia. Clement hasn’t played since Week 1 against Alabama and has only 16 yards on eight carries this season.

“Corey has been dealing with some issues since before the Alabama game,” head coach Paul Chryst said in a statement. “He has been undergoing treatment since that time and has seen some progress but not to the point where our medical staff is satisfied. So after consultation with out medical staff, Corey has decided to have surgery for a sports hernia.

“I feel bad for Corey that this is impacting his season because I know how hard he works and how important this football team is to him. We are very confident that he will make a full recovery after the surgery and I know he will attack his rehab so he can get back on the field as soon as he can.”

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

Clement rushed for 949 yards and nine touchdowns in 2014 while serving as a backup behind Heisman finalist Melvin Gordon. He also rushed for 547 yards and seven touchdowns as a true freshman in 2013.

With Clement missing the past two games, junior Dare Ogunbowale, a former walk-on, and true freshman Taiwan Deal have been splitting carries. Ogunbowale leads the team with 196 yards and two touchdowns on 33 carries while Deal has 143 yards and two scores on 36 carries.

The 22nd-ranked Badgers (2-1) host Hawaii on Saturday night.

Cincinnati quarterback Gunner Kiel moving extremities following vicious hit (Video)

Cincinnati quarterback Gunner Kiel is awake and moving his extremities after suffering a hit by Memphis cornerback Chauncey Lanier. Kiel was examined in the locker room and then transported to the hospital.

Kiel appeared to be knocked out after Lanier lowered his head/shoulder and struck Kiel as he was attempting to slide. Kiel’s head smacked against the turf. Officials ruled that the hit was with the shoulder and Lanier was not assessed a targeting penalty.

Kiel was on the turf for several minutes as medical staff from both the Cincinnati and Memphis sidelines attended to him. He was loaded on the cart and taken to the locker room. ESPN reported Kiel was moving his toes and blinking his eyes as he was being wheeled off.

Kiel had to exit last week’s game early after suffering a concussion following a neck injury.

Cincinnati QB Hayden Moore has record-setting night in loss to Memphis

$
0

Cincinnati quarterback Hayden Moore had a record-setting night against Memphis on Thursday, but it was his final pass that defined the evening.

With less than a minute remaining and his team down seven, Moore methodically took the Bearcats from their 20-yard line to the Memphis 20-yard line, and with two timeout had the tying score in sight.

Moore had been calm and collected throughout the drive, but when he feared he was going to be sacked with 17 seconds remaining, he hurled the ball toward running back Tion Green, who had it glance off his hands and into the waiting arms of Memphis defender Leonard Pegues sealing a 53-46 Memphis win.

It was a devastating ending to a night that saw Moore come off the bench and throw for a school-record 557 yards and four touchdowns in relief of starter Gunner Kiel, who was knocked out of the game following a vicious hit. Kiel, who missed most of the second half of last week’s game with a concussion, left the field on a stretcher and was ultimately transported to a hospital. He was conscious and had feeling in all of his extremities.

Moore came in and played better than most freshmen would have in a similar situation. Even though he did have another interception earlier in the contest, he kept Cincinnati in the game as the Bearcats went toe-to-toe with one of the nation’s best offenses.

It was a back and forth affair where the teams traded scores on nearly every possession. The score was tied at 46 with less than six minutes remaining when Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch drove his team all the way down the field resulting in a 3-yard touchdown run by Sam Craft to put the Tigers up a score.

Lynch finished with 412 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed 11 times for 52 yards.

With the win, Memphis is 4-0 for the first time as a member of the FBS.

Alabama fkicker Gunnar Raborn, the backup to Adam Griffith, is suspended from the team after he was arrested Thursday afternoon.

Raborn was arrested by University of Alabama police for driving under the influence of a controlled substance per TideSports.com. He was released on a $1,000 bond.

Alabama coach Nick Saban's statement to Al.com was succinct.

"Gunnar Raborn has been suspended indefinitely," it said.

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

Alabama's kicking struggles have been a topic early in the 2015 season. Griffith missed his first four field goals of the year (two against Wisconsin and two against Middle Tennessee State) before connecting on a 20-yard field goal against Ole Miss. He's 14-14 on extra points.

Raborn, a walk-on, missed two kicks total in 2014. He was 2-3 kicking field goals and 9-10 kicking extra points.

He's also not the first Power Five conference kicker to be arrested for DUI and suspended in 2015. Clemson K Ammon Lakip was arrested for DUI over the summer and suspended for the Tigers' first three games of the season.

Notre Dame DT to miss UMass game after tweets critical of coaches

$

Notre Dame defensive tackle Jay Hayes will miss the Fighting Irish's game Saturday against UMass thanks to tweets critical of his coaches.

Hayes made the tweets, now deleted, late Tuesday night.

Thursday, Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said why Hayes wouldn't be playing. And it's hard to argue with Kelly's reasoning.

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

"There has to be responsibility as it relates to social media and you have to think before you hit send," Kelly said via BlueandGold.com. "What you have to do is knock on my door instead of hitting the send button. These are good lessons to be learned. If he has a job at Google and he talks about his boss that way, he's probably not going to have a job the next day. You try to use them as life lessons.

"You don't say, 'Hey, I'm going to take Twitter away from you.' You tell him, 'You need to make better decisions next time or it's going to impact you when you leave here at Notre Dame.' We have players that want to get on the field. I had a conversation with Jay. He understands the mistake he made."

Hayes appeared in two games for Notre Dame in 2014 after the team removed his redshirt. He hasn't played so far in 2015, possibly leading to his frustration.

He was a four-star recruit in the class of 2014 and the No. 14 defensive tackle in the country according to Rivals.

Dr. Saturday's daily fantasy picks and advice for Saturday's games

$
0
0

During the past couple weeks, I’ve done lineups for both the early and the late contests on FanDuel. But after looking at the slate of games, I felt better about the choices from the earlier slate. That said, these are going to be some unorthodox plays, so I’m also going to provide an alternate play for each position.

Here’s a quick look at the players I like for this week’s daily fantasy:

QUARTERBACK

EARLY

Drew Kummer, Miami-Ohio ($5,300): There were a lot of good quarterback options for these contests — a lot — but in order to get some of the other players I wanted, I had to find a value quarterback. That said, Kummer should come through with some points. One, he's from a MAC school, so, MACtion; and two, he has a very favorable matchup against a Western Kentucky defense that allows 309.7 passing yards per game. Don't hate on this pick.

Alternate: Matt Johnson, Bowling Green ($8,600); Mason Rudolph, Oklahoma State ($8,100)

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

RUNNING BACK

EARLY

Leonard Fournette, LSU ($8,700): I think most people are going to have a tough time keeping Fournette out of their daily lineups for the rest of the season, and he has a favorable matchup with a Syracuse defense that hasn’t really been tested in the running game. This is a great opportunity for Fournette to pad his already fantastic stats. Hopefully, he takes advantage of it.

Aaron Green, TCU ($8,300): Green rushed for a season-high 164 yards and two touchdowns against SMU and he should find similar success against a Texas Tech team that’s allowing 257.3 rushing yards per game. This game was tailormade for yards and points.

Alternate: Patrick Skov, Georgia Tech ($5,800) for Green

WIDE RECEIVER

EARLY

Will Fuller ($7,900): Fuller has been the prime receiving target in this Notre Dame offense and he should get quite a few looks against a UMass team that has been shredded in the passing game for 279.5 yards per game. This is a great matchup for Fuller.

Ricky Jones, Indiana ($6,500): Quarterback Nate Sudfeld should have a big game against Wake team that was exposed in its only contest against a decent passing game. Jones is the Hoosiers go-to target and he has two 100-yard games in three contests. He’ll get his third this weekend.

Sam Martin, Miami-Ohio ($5,300): Once again, this pick is all about price and matchup. Martin had four catches for 124 yards and a touchdown against Cincinnati last week. He’ll get more looks against that porous WKU secondary.

Alternates: Jakeem Grant, Texas Tech ($6,900); Aaron Burbridge, Michigan State ($6,800); Isaiah Jones, East Carolina ($5,900)

TIGHT END

LATE

Ben McCord, Central Michigan ($3,000): McCord is Central Michigan’s leading receiver with 16 catches for 306 yards and two touchdowns. Michigan State is not a great matchup, but we know the Spartans’ defense has a habit of giving up yards, especially if they get up in a game. McCord is the Chippewas’ top target and if they’re going to try for a monumental upset, they’re going to need him.

Alternate: Avery Edwards, Maryland ($2,200)

Spread Options: Dr. Saturday's Week 4 picks against the spread

$
0
0

It took us three weeks to have our first bad week. We were 2-6-2 in Week 3. Our total record is 14-12-4. Still above .500 but not great. Let's rebound in Week 4.

Boise State at Virginia (+2), 8 p.m. ET FRIDAY: Boise State will be playing two quarterbacks Friday after Ryan Finley broke his ankle in Week 3. Virginia hung with Notre Dame at home until the pass from DeShone Kizer to Will Fuller that may go down in Notre Dame lore depending on how the Irish's season pans out. We like the Cavaliers to pull the upset.

Stanford at Oregon State (+15), 9 p.m. ET FRIDAY: We don't feel the same way about Oregon State, but this game should be within two touchdowns. The X factor is Stanford quarterback Kevin Hogan and the line reflects that. With a healthy Hogan, the Cardinal are heavier favorites. But it's also possible he may miss the game. Watch this line closely, but we like Oregon State even if Hogan gets the start.

BYU (+7) at Michigan, Noon ET: The Cougars can't get no respect. BYU was a 16.5-point dog to UCLA and lost by one in Week 3. UCLA is a better team than Michigan is, especially at the quarterback position. Tanner Mangum and the BYU offense should be able to move the ball on the Michigan defense. Remember that the final score of the Wolverines' win over Oregon State was inflated by some self-inflicted mistakes by the Beavers.

Bowling Green at Purdue (UNDER 75), Noon ET: We liked Bowling Green earlier in the week, but the line on the game has moved significantly in the Falcons' favor. BGSU is now favored by 4.5. All three of the Falcons' games this year have either hit or surpassed 75 total points. One of Purdue's has. With a new quarterback in David Blough at quarterback for the Boilermakers, we're not confident that Purdue will have enough offense to make Bowling Green 4-4 when it comes to hitting 75.

Oklahoma State at Texas (+3), 3:30 p.m. ET: It's the Joe Wickline Bowl. Here's an idea... the winner of the game should also win the legal battle over Wickline's contract at OSU. If the Cowboys win, Texas has to pay the buyout on his contract. If Texas wins, there has to be a settlement negotiated. It'd save both schools from legal drama at the very least. We like the Longhorns in this one; the Texas offense looked completely different with Jerrod Heard at QB. Yeah, it was the Cal defense, but Cal may be a better overall team than Oklahoma State.

Tennessee (-1.5) at Florida, 3:30 p.m. ET: This line has moved significantly throughout the week too. It started with the Gators giving 1.5 points and shifted as news of the suspensions of QB Treon Harris and CB Jalen Tabor emerged. We liked Tennessee early in the week and we like the Volunteers now, especially knowing that this game is going to be entirely Will Grier's for Florida. The UF defense is the best that the Tennessee offense has faced all year, but do you think that Florida can contain QB Josh Dobbs and RBs Alvin Kamara and Jalen Hurd enough to get the win?

Marshall (-7) at Kent State, 3:30 p.m. ET: You're probably doing a double-take at this line, right? After going 11-3 in 2012, Kent State is 7-19 over the past two-plus seasons. Marshall is 25-6 in that timeframe. So what gives? Marshall QB Michael Birdsong is doubtful with a shoulder injury, which means the QB job is all true freshman Chase Litton's. He's gotten some playing time already this year and his stat line is impressive (24-31 passing for 270 yards and four touchdowns). We're comfortable with Litton on the road.

Texas A&M (-7.5) vs. Arkansas, 7 p.m. ET: Will Arkansas coach Bret Bielema get his butt kicked for a third straight game? His Hogs have played Texas A&M close each of the past two seasons. But right now we have no reason to have any faith in Arkansas. The defense hasn't been very good and the offense, well, you know about the offense. This is a prove-it game for Texas A&M, who hasn't been tested since Week 1 vs. Arizona State, also at a neutral site.

Missouri (+2.5) vs. Kentucky, 7:30 p.m. ET: The over/under on this game has moved up to a whopping 45 points. Each offense scored nine points in Week 3. The Tigers won over UConn while Florida beat the Wildcats. Missouri could have tailback Russell Hansbrough back after a severe ankle suffered early in Week 1 has hampered him through the first three weeks. The Tigers are the better team – the defense is once again legit.

UCLA at Arizona (+3), 8 p.m. ET: We're making this pick on the guess that UCLA's defensive injuries will be too hard to overcome. LB Myles Jack's anterior meniscus injury meant that the Bruins are now down three defensive starters for the season. Arizona could get All-American LB Scooby Wright back for this game. Coincidentally, Wright is recovering from a meniscus injury. Homefield advantage tips this in Arizona's favor for us.

LOCKS OF THE WEEK (TO BE WRONG)

Nick Bromberg (0-3): Georgia Southern (-16) at Idaho, 9 p.m. ET: Going to go off the grid for this one in the hopes of trying to get one right. Idaho is a disaster of a football team (which isn't a new development if you look at the Vandals' record over the past few seasons) and doesn't have a chance against GSU's triple-option offense. Bet the house on the Vandals because you know this will be wrong.

Sam Cooper (0-3): Bowling Green (-4.5) at Purdue: Purdue had a similar line last week and was blown out, allowing 51 points to a Virginia Tech team that is not exactly an offensive juggernaut. This week the Boilermakers take on a high-powered Bowling Green offense that already beat up another Big Ten team (48-27 over Maryland) on the road this season. Purdue needs to put up a lot of points if it is going to win this game, but with redshirt freshman David Blough making his first career start at QB, I don't think the Boilermakers will be able to keep up with BGSU. Hopefully my streak of cursing QBs doesn't move on to Matt Johnson.

Graham Watson (0-2-1): Oklahoma State at Texas (+3): Few teams can ride the momentum of a moral victory, but that’s what Texas is going to do this week against Oklahoma State. While the Longhorns’ schedule has been brutal, it has prepared them for the rigors of the Big 12 slate. Texas quarterback Jerrod Heard is a dynamic player who showed last week that he could change a game with his feet and his arm. I think he carries the Longhorns past an Oklahoma State team that has cruised past three non-Power Five opponents. Texas beat Oklahoma State a year ago and this is a better Texas team. I like the Longhorns a lot here.

Report: Cal could play Hawaii in Australia in 2016

Cal football could be playing Hawaii in Australia in 2016.

According to the San Jose Mercury News, a source said there is "a strong likelihood" the two teams will play across the Pacific and in the Southern Hemisphere next season. The game could become official in the next few weeks.

From the Mercury News:

David Matlin, athletic director for Hawaii, recently told Hawaii News Now that the athletic department is negotiating to schedule the game. Cal athletic director Michael Williams could not immediately be reached for comment.

No date for the game has been finalized, but speculation is the Bears and Rainbow Warriors would meet Aug. 27, possibly in Sydney.

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

Cal had previously been reported to possibly play Baylor in Australia next season. But it looks like the possibility of the Bears from Texas heading down under is gone.

If you were wondering about the travel time for a game in Australia, it's not exactly a short trip for Hawaii, either. While it's a 15-hour flight for Cal, it's over a 10-hour flight for Hawaii too from Honolulu to Sydney.

A game on August 27 would also be played a week earlier than the scheduled start of the 2016 season. With Labor Day on September 5, the first Saturday of the college football season is set to be September 3.

Major League Baseball opened the 2014 season in Sydney when the Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers played two games in March.

What to Watch, Week 4: Pac-12 play brings exciting matchups

$

0

We’re already a quarter of the way through the college football season and consistent conference play begins this week.

This is when things get serious.

As we’ve seen in past seasons, early losses can be overcome, but losing from here forward likely would knock a team out of College Football Playoff contention.

Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of great ranked-team matchups this week outside of the Pac-12, which means staying up late for #Pac12AfterDark for many of you. But, we think the late night will be worth it; it has been in the past.

Here’s what to what heading into Week 4:

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

Game of the week:
No. 9 UCLA at No. 16 Arizona, 8 p.m. ET
Arizona’s defense was one of the most feared in the Pac-12 year ago, but that hasn’t been the case through the first quarter of the 2015 season. The Wildcats have struggled without star linebacker Sccoby Wright, who has been recovering from a knee injury he suffered in the season opener. He has been practicing this week and could provide a problem for UCLA freshman quarterback Josh Rosen. Rosen has been good most of the season, but did struggle some against the pressure of BYU’s defense. That said, both of these offenses can light it up. Arizona QB Anu Solomon is one of the best in the country and UCLA’s defense was hit with another major loss with the season-ending injury to linebacker Myles Jack. Solomon will test the Bruins’ thin secondary early and often, so it will be interesting to see how the Bruins respond.

Both of these teams are among the favorites to win the Pac-12 South and Arizona is the defending champ, so this game will go a long way in terms of determining what will be a close divisional race.

Game to Watch:
No. 18 Utah at No. 13 Oregon, 8:30 p.m. ET

Utah is in the midst of a bit of a renaissance. It finished its nonconference slate 3-0 and has reached its highest ranking since 2010. That said, it will face a monumental task against an Oregon team that is one of the most dynamic programs in the country.

Utah has remained undefeated thanks to the strength of its defense, which is allowing just 18.3 points per game and just 105.7 yards per game on the ground. Oregon running back Royce Freeman leads the Ducks’ eighth-ranked rushing offense, and quarterback Vernon Adams, who returns this week after missing a game with a broken finger, will add another dimension to both the running and passing game. Adams has thrown for 555 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown in two games this year.

However, the Ducks’ defense has been atrocious ranking 105th in the nation with 456.3 yards allowed per game. The Utes will rely heavily on running back Devontae Booker, who leads the tem with 345 yards and four touchdowns.

Utah played close in this game a year ago. It trailed 27-20 heading into the fourth quarter, but then gave up 24 points in the fourth quarter.

Also check out…
No. 24 Oklahoma State at Texas, Sat., 3:30 p.m. ET

There are no such things as moral victories in football, but Texas, which has struggled for the past few seasons, is claiming one in last week’s loss to Cal, and that should give the Longhorns momentum heading into their first conference game against Oklahoma State.

Texas quarterback Jerrod Heard was dynamic last week as he had little trouble leading his team up and down the field, matching Cal score-for-score. The defense left a little something to be desired, which will open the door for Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph, who has been sensational so far this season completing 68.9 percent of his passes for 947 yards, five touchdowns and one interception.

While Texas nonconference schedule was brutal, it will be better prepared for conference play. Oklahoma State is undefeated, but its toughest opponent was Central Michigan and the Cowboys struggled in that contest.

Channel surf through…
No. 22 BYU at Michigan, noon ET:
BYU’s magical season hit a speed bump with a close loss to UCLA last week, but it has a chance to get back on track with a signature win against Michigan. Similarly, the Wolverines have been playing well of late, but this game will be a measuring stick of how far they’ve come in a few weeks.

Tennessee at Florida, 3:30 p.m. ET: Tennessee had a week off after a stunning loss to Oklahoma. Florida has been winning, but it hasn’t been pretty. And with backup quarterback Treon Harris suspended, the Gators will rely on Will Grier to play better than he’s played all season. This will be a good SEC East matchup.

No. 3 TCU at Texas Tech, 4:45 p.m. ET: If you like points, this is the game for you. Both of these teams can score a lot while their defenses leave a little something to be desired. TCU has lost a lot of starters on defense, which has placed pressure on the offense to perform. The Horned Frogs have had a lot of close calls this year already and this game in Lubbock should be no different. This one should be fun.

No. 14 Texas A&M at Arkansas, 7 p.m. ET: Ever since Arkansas coach Bret Bielema started gabbing about the schedules of a certain team up north, it’s been nothing but bad for the Razorbacks. Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury predicted Arkansas would get its (expletive) kicked by the Aggies. Will his prediction come true or will the Razorbacks get off the schneid?

Mississippi State at Auburn, 7:30 p.m. ET: The only reason this game is worth watching is to see whether quarterback Sean White can change the fortunes of a struggling Auburn team. White, a freshman, replaces Jeremy Johnson this week in hopes of righting the Auburn offense. Mississippi State goes as Dak Prescott goes, which will be a tremendous challenge for a porous Auburn defense.

College Football's All-Injured Team for 2015

AthlonSports.com is a leading website for preseason and in-season football previews, predictions, rankings and analysis.

Injuries are an unfortunate part of every college football season. Whether it’s a small ailment affecting a key player for a couple of weeks or an injury keeping a player sidelined for the entire year, all injuries have an impact on the final win-loss record for all 128 teams.

2015 has especially been cruel for key players suffering major injuries. Likely All-Americans in Pittsburgh running back James Conner and UCLA linebacker Myles Jack suffered season-ending knee injuries, while two talented quarterbacks in Notre Dame’s Malik Zaire and BYU’s Taysom Hill were lost for the year after in-game injuries this season.

Considering all of the major injuries in 2015, Athlon Sports compiled the biggest and formed a team to highlight some of the top players on the sidelines.

Only players that are lost for the year were considered for this list.

College Football's 2015 All-Injury Team

Offense

Notre Dame and BYU were the teams hit the hardest by injuries to the quarterback position so far in 2015. Zaire averaged 265.5 yards per game through the first two contests and shredded Texas for 313 yards through the air in the opener. Hill missed half of 2014 due to a leg injury and suffered a season-ending foot injury against Nebraska. Tanner Mangum has stepped up at quarterback for BYU in Hill’s absence.

RB James Conner, Pittsburgh

Conner was the ACC’s player of the year last season after rushing for 1,765 yards and 26 scores. The Pennsylvania native was lost for the year due to a knee injury in the opener against Youngstown State.

RB Jonathan Williams, Arkansas

Arkansas’ rushing attack hasn’t been the same without Williams teaming with Alex Collins to lead the ground game. Williams rushed for 900 yards in 2013 and followed that up with 1,190 yards and 12 scores last season.

RB Leon Allen, WKU

Allen was one of the top running backs in the Group of 5 ranks after recording 1,542 yards and 13 scores last season. The senior suffered a significant knee injury in Week 2 this year and was ruled out for the remainder of 2015. Prior to the injury, Allen was averaging 5.1 yards per carry. Other top running backs out for the year: Thomas Tyner, Oregon, Tarean Folston, Notre Dame and Aaron Jones, UTEP.

WR Mike Dudek, Illinois

Dudek had a promising freshman season – 76 catches for 1,038 yards and six scores – but a torn ACL in spring practice is expected to sideline the sophomore for all of 2015. Dudek led all Big Ten pass catchers by averaging 89.5 receiving yards in Big Ten games last season.

WR Cameron Smith, Arizona State

Smith was Arizona State’s third-leading receiver last season (41 catches for 596 yards) and was slated for a bigger role with the departure of Jaelen Strong to the NFL. However, Smith suffered a season-ending knee injury in the spring.

Ross has played on both sides of the ball during his two years with the Huskies and is a valuable weapon on special teams. He’s out for 2015 due to a knee injury.

OL Jaryd Jones-Smith, Pittsburgh

Jones-Smith was penciled in as Pittsburgh’s starting right tackle but suffered a season-ending knee injury in July.

OL Jordan Budwig, FIU

Entered 2015 with 24 consecutive starts and was picked as a first-team All-Conference USA selection in July but is sidelined due to a shoulder injury.

OL Andrew Jelks, Vanderbilt

Jelks was expected to anchor Vanderbilt’s line in 2015 at left tackle. However, a leg injury will sideline the 2013 SEC All-Freshman team selection.

OL Jeromy Irwin, Colorado

Irwin was a key cog in Colorado’s offensive line, starting all 11 games for the Buffaloes in 2014 and playing in 10 games in 2012. He suffered a torn ACL in the win over UMass.

OL Marcus Jackson, Tennessee

Jackson suffered a biceps injury in August and is expected to be sidelined for all of 2015. After a redshirt year in 2013, Jackson started 12 games in 2014 and previously started five contests in 2011.

Defense

UCLA defensive lineman Eddie Vanderdoes. (AP Photo/Jae C. Hong)

DL Eddie Vanderdoes, UCLA

Vanderdoes is one of the Pac-12’s top defensive linemen, but a knee injury suffered in the opener against Virginia will keep the junior on the sidelines for the rest of 2015. Vanderdoes accumulated eight tackles against the Cavaliers and recorded 50 tackles and two sacks for UCLA’s defense in 2014.

DL Harold Brantley, Missouri

Brantley was poised for a huge season after recording 54 tackles (seven for a loss) in 14 games last season. The Pennsylvania native is out for 2015 due to injuries suffered in a car crash in late June.

Related: Grading the Panic Level for Every SEC Team at Quarterback After Week 3

DL Jarron Jones, Notre Dame

Jones was expected to hold a starting spot on the interior of Notre Dame’s line, but this unit has held up relatively well in his absence, limiting opponents to 3.8 yards per carry through three games. Jones started 11 games for the Fighting Irish last season and recorded 40 tackles (7.5 for a loss).

DL James McFarland, TCU

McFarland hasn’t been officially ruled out for the year, but all signs point to the senior sitting out 2015 due to a foot injury. The Louisiana native finished 2014 with 12 tackles for a loss, seven sacks and three forced fumbles. Other top defensive linemen out for the year: Issac Gross, Ole Miss, Harrison Phillips, Stanford, and Bryan Mone, Michigan.

LB Myles Jack, UCLA

UCLA’s defense suffered a huge setback after Jack was lost for the year in practice prior to Week 4. Jack ranked second on the team with 88 stops last season and was widely considered a first-team All-American for 2015.

LB Ed Davis, Michigan State

Michigan State’s linebacking corps suffered a huge blow in August when Davis was ruled out for the year due to a knee injury. The Detroit native was an underrated cog in the front seven for the Spartans after starting 12 games and recording 58 tackles (12 for a loss) and seven sacks in 2014.

Donovonn Young #5 of the Illinois Fighting Illini runs the ball as Nyeem Wartman #5 of the Penn State Nittany Lions pursues. (Photo by Michael Hickey/Getty Images)

LB Nyeem Wartman-White, Penn State

Wartman-White was slated to become the leader for Penn State’s linebacking corps, as the Philadelphia native was expected to take over for Mike Hull in the middle. Wartman-White started 12 games last season and recorded 75 tackles but was lost for the season with a leg injury in the opener against Temple.

DB Fabian Moreau, UCLA

There’s no question the Bruins will miss Moreau on a secondary that has limited opponents to just two passing scores through the first three games. The Florida native had 25 career starts prior to 2015 and recorded eight stops this season. Getting Ishmael Adams back from suspension helps to soften the blow from Moreau’s season-ending foot injury.

DB Vayante Copeland, Michigan State

Copeland was considered a rising star in Michigan State’s “No Fly Zone” and recorded seven tackles and one interception through the first two games. However, the redshirt freshman suffered a neck injury in the win over Oregon and is sidelined for the rest of the year.

TCU defensive back Ranthony Texada #11 of the TCU Horned Frogs breaks up a pass intended for Eric Carter #9 of Minnesota. (Photo by Hannah Foslien/Getty Images)

DB Ranthony Texada, TCU

Gary Patterson’s acumen as a defensive mastermind will be put to the test this year, as TCU’s defense has been hit hard by injuries. Texada is just one of two key defensive backs – Kenny Iloka is the other – out for the year due to injuries for the Horned Frogs. Texada was considered a rising star prior to 2015 and recorded seven tackles and two pass breakups in three games.

DB Bryon Fields, Duke

Duke’s secondary might be one of the ACC’s most underrated position groups, but this unit suffered a setback in the preseason with Fields suffering a season-ending knee injury in August. The North Carolina native has played in 27 career games with the Blue Devils and recorded 112 tackles and one pick in that span.

Cincinnati: X-rays negative for Gunner Kiel

Cincinnati said Friday that X-rays were negative for quarterback Gunner Kiel and he traveled home with the team following its game at Memphis on Thursday night.

Kiel left the game in the second quarter after a scary hit. Here's the entire release

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

Kiel was hit in the head while he was sliding. He was motionless on the field after the hit and the ESPN telecast later reported he had movement in his extremities after he was transported to a local hospital.

If Kiel doesn't start against Miami on Thursday, backup QB Hayden Moore will get the start. Moore threw for 557 yards and four touchdowns as the Bearcats lost 53-46. His yards were a school record but the team's comeback fell short when Moore threw an interception on the final drive of the game. He was being sacked and tossed the ball to running back Tion Green. The ball went off Green's hands and was picked off.
