(Photo by Stacy Revere/Getty Images)Tulane athletic director Rick Dickson will retire in May 2016, he announced Friday. Dickson has held the position since 2000, including during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, which "nearly destroyed the university's athletics facilities," the school said in a release.

With Dickson at the helm, Tulane teams won 41 Conference USA titles and reached NCAA postseason play 36 times. He also guided the Green Wave’s transition from C-USA to the American Athletic Conference and oversaw the opening of Yulman Stadium for the football program.

“Rick has the devotion, respect and love of the Tulane University community,” Tulane President Mike Fitts said. “Among his many achievements is bringing Green Wave athletics back from the evacuation of 300 student-athletes and the subsequent shutdown of several programs in 2005, to a full complement of 16 teams in 2007.

"Rick has been a tremendous resource to me as a new president and has helped me understand the complex issues surrounding intercollegiate athletics. I will miss him.”

Before his time at Tulane, Dickson served as athletic director at Washington State from 1994 to 2000 and spent six years as AD at Tulsa, his alma mater.

“When I look back on my 29 years in this business, my fondest memories are those I made at Tulane,” Dickson said. “I am most proud of what this program has done to transform the lives of so many of the young men and women who have worn a Green Wave uniform during my time here. I will miss them, my staff and coaches the most.”

Report: Arizona star LB Scooby Wright to return vs. UCLA

Arizona linebacker Scooby Wright III limps off the field during the first half of an NCAA college football game against UTSA, Thursday, Sept. 3, 2015, in Tucson, Ariz. (AP Photo/Rick Scuteri)It looks like No. 16 Arizona will have its best defensive player in the lineup Saturday night against No. 9 UCLA.

ESPN’s Brett McMurphy reported Friday that star linebacker Scooby Wright is “expected to play” for the Wildcats. Wright, an All-American middle linebacker, injured his left knee in Arizona’s season-opening win over UTSA on Sept. 3.

According to McMurphy, Wright “had his left knee scoped three weeks ago to repair a lateral meniscus tear.” He tested the knee in practice this week and is now reportedly ready to return to action.

Arizona (3-0) was able to beat Nevada and Northern Arizona without Wright in the lineup, but he will be a welcome presence as the Wildcats begin Pac-12 play. Wright, a junior, totaled 163 tackles, 29 tackles for loss, 14 sacks and six forced fumbles en route to winning Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year in 2014.

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

And while Wright is set to return for the Wildcats, UCLA (3-0) lost two of its best defensive players – linebacker Myles Jack and cornerback Fabian Moreau – to season-ending injuries. However, cornerback Ishmael Adams will return from suspension for the Bruins.

The game kicks off at 8 p.m. from Arizona Stadium.

Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg (14) is sacked by Rutgers defensive lineman Darius Hamilton (91)during the third quarter of an NCAA college football game Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014, in Piscataway, N.J. (AP Photo/Mel Evans)The hits keep coming for Rutgers.

The program announced before Saturday’s game against Kansas that senior defensive lineman Darius Hamilton will miss the rest of the season due to a “lower body injury.”

Hamilton was an All-Big Ten selection for the Scarlet Knights last season as he racked up 45 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss and six sacks. He appeared in just one game this season – last weekend’s loss at Penn State.

According to the Asbury Park Press, Hamilton said on Monday that he could redshirt this season and return for his fifth year next fall. He could also potentially be eligible for a graduate transfer, but has given no indication that was something he was considering.

Overall in his career, Hamilton has 110 tackles, 24.5 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks.

Hamilton’s injury is the latest setback in a difficult few months for Rutgers. The team has had a bevy of off-field incidents, leading to the dismissal of six players. Additionally, head coach Kyle Flood is currently serving a three-game suspension for impermissible contact with a faculty member and star wide receiver Leonte Carroo is indefinitely suspended after an arrest for assault.

Rutgers (1-2) hosts Kansas on Saturday.

Syracuse's punter hurdled an LSU defender on a fake FG (Video)

Syracuse punter Riley Dixon not only got to keep the ball on a fake field goal for the Orange, he got to hurdle an LSU defender in the process.

Dixon, who lined up to attempt the long field goal, got the first down with his run and showed off some leaping ability. It wasn't a perfect hurdle, but it was solidly executed.

He was incredibly excited afterwards too; he punched the air. One problem, there was an LSU player in the way. Thankfully he avoided inciting any melee.

The fake field goal came with less than a minute to go in the second quarter and Syracuse trailing the No. 8 Tigers 7-3. The Orange couldn't punch the ball into the end zone before the half was over and settled for another field goal attempt. That attempt was handled by kicker Cole Murphy. And it went off the upright to keep the score 7-3 at halftime.

It was the second time Dixon's been a part of a notable fake field goal over the past two seasons. In 2014, Dixon threw a touchdown pass on a fake field goal to win the Orange's season-opener against Villanova.

Michigan rolls BYU 31-0, moves to 3-1

$

After a rocky start at Utah in the season's first week, Michigan fans had some trepidation about the possibilites of coach Jim Harbaugh's first season with the team.

Now, after the fourth game of the season and a game against another team from Utah, that trepidation has been replaced with optimism. The Wolverines throttled BYU 31-0 to move to 3-1 before Big Ten play begins.

All 31 of those points came in the first half. A touchdown run by quarterback Jake Rudock in the first quarter opened the scoring and the Wolverines scored 24 points in the second quarter. The final touchdown was a 17-yard run for Rudock, who simply turned the corner as he ran across the line of scrimmage and had nothing in his way towards the end zone.

BYU, playing its third Power Five opponent on the road in four weeks and a week removed from a 24-23 loss to UCLA, looked a step slow the entire game. The defense was chasing Michigan's offense around during the entire first half and the offense was abysmal. The pass game contributed absolutely nothing. Quarterback Tanner Mangum finished 11-of-27 for 51 yards. The offense had 101 total yards.

It was the first time that BYU had been shut out since 2003. And Michigan's first shutout since 2012.

If there was a downside to the win for Michigan, it was when running back De'Veon Smith limped off the field with a right ankle injury. His ankle got twisted awkwardly as he was tackled in the third quarter and he was later taken to the locker room on a cart. Smith finished with 16 carries for 125 yards and a touchdown. The score came on a 60-yard run.

Smith being out for an extended period of time would slow the Michigan offense. While Rudock played well on Saturday, his effectiveness is maximized by a strong run game. Smith had nearly half of Michigan's total rushing yardage against BYU.

But even without him, Michigan's path to a 10-win season doesn't seem as daunting as it might have three weeks ago. The defense has continued to be stellar and the three ranked teams on Michigan's schedule – Northwestern, Michigan State and Ohio State – all are at home. While many people expected Michigan to be playing spoiler to the latter two teams' title hopes in 2015, the Wolverines could be doing so while being in the top 25 themselves.

Georgia Tech falls flat as Duke takes early ACC Coastal lead

$

Georgia Tech’s promising season has now fallen flat on its face.

After losing to Notre Dame last week, the Yellow Jackets had an opportunity to start ACC play off on the right foot.

But an inspired Duke defense shut down Georgia Tech's potent offense and defeated the Yellow Jackets 34-20.

The loss might not keep Georgia Tech from winning the ACC, but it certainly knocks the Yellow Jackets out of contention for the College Football Playoff.

Duke jumped out to a 19-3 first quarter lead and never looked back despite some sloppy play by both teams. The teams combined for five total turnovers and two of them came in the final eight minutes of the game.

After Georgia Tech quarterback Justin Thomas scored a 12-yard touchdown to cut the Duke lead to 26-20, Duke quarterback Thomas Sirk threw an interception. Georgia Tech took over on Duke’s 35-yard line, but ultimately turned the ball over on downs. On Georgia Tech’s next possession, Thomas fumbled on the Georgia Tech 39 and Duke scored the final touchdown to seal the game.

Duke was discounted coming into this contest because of its loss to Northwestern last week. But Duke never trailed against the Yellow Jackets and despite mistakes, it was able to limit the Georgia Tech running game to just 173 yards and the passing game to just 143 yards.

The win gives Georgia Tech the early lead in the ACC Coastal standings, which already has prompted a bit of smack talk.

Leonard Fournette runs wild in LSU's 34-24 win over Syracuse

$

Syracuse put up a valiant effort Saturday against No. 8 LSU, but the Orange had no answer for Tigers sophomore running back Leonard Fournette.

Fournette ran wild at the Carrier Dome, racking up 244 yards and two touchdowns in a 34-24 Tigers win. In the process, Fournette became the first LSU player to rush for 200 yards in back-to-back weeks, and he did so against a Syracuse defense that gave up an average of 46 rushing yards per game coming into Saturday’s contest.

Fournette now has 631 rushing yards and eight touchdowns in three games, further establishing himself as an early Heisman frontrunner. He also has five straight 100-yard rushing performances.

Fournette’s first score of the game came on a 14-yard burst late in the first quarter. That touchdown was set up by a heads-up play from quarterback Brandon Harris, who narrowly avoided a sack by alertly flipping the ball to Fournette, who took off for a 48-yard gain.

But that would be the only score of the half for the Tigers thanks to a stellar defensive effort from Syracuse.

Things would change in the second half, largely thanks to Fournette. He saw the ball early and often on an LSU field goal drive that opened the third quarter. Fournette then added another highlight to his reel on a 62-yard scamper late in the third, increasing the lead to 24-10.

The Orange wouldn’t go away, however. Making his first career start, walk-on quarterback Zack Mahoney threw his second touchdown of the game on a two-yard strike to Ben Lewis to cut LSU’s lead to 24-17 early in the fourth.

And when the Syracuse defense was poised to make a stop on the next possession, Harris went to the air and hit Travin Dural deep for a 51-yard gain on a third-and-nine play. Harris dropped another dime on the next play, hitting Malachi Dupre in the corner of the end zone for an 11-yard score to bring LSU’s lead back to two scores, 31-17.

A Mahoney interception allowed LSU to tack on a field goal and aside from a late ‘Cuse touchdown, the Tigers defense held on the rest of the way for a 34-24 win.

The win moves LSU to 3-0 on the season with one more non-conference game (Eastern Michigan) before resuming SEC play.

The loss is the first of the year for Syracuse, which drops to 3-1.

Southern University wide receiver Devon Gales is hospitalized with a spinal injury following a scary moment in the third quarter of his team's game against Georgia on Saturday.

Gales was on the kickoff return team for Southern and according to OnlineAthens.com, his head appeared to make contact with the shoulder of Georgia kicker Marshall Morgan. He was taken off the field on a stretcher and subsequently transported to the hospital.

From a Southern release:

"Southern University wide receiver Devon Gales sustained a spinal injury during Saturday's contest against the University of Georgia in Sanford Stadium."

"Gales will remain under the care of the doctors at Athens Regional until further notice.
"Southern University and the Jaguar Nation asks for your continued prayers for Devon and the entire Gales family during this difficult time."

Morgan told OnlineAthens after the game that he hoped Gales would be OK.

“I hope the guy is all right,” Morgan said. “I’ll be praying for him and his family.”

Gales is a redshirt sophomore WR from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and didn't have a catch against Georgia. He has one catch for 24 yards in 2015.

Georgia beat Southern 48-6. Georgia running back Nick Chubb ran for 131 yards on 15 carries, his 12th-straight game with over 100 yards rushing.

Florida shocks Tennessee 28-27 on late-game fourth down TD

$

Florida increased its winning streak over Tennessee to 11 games and did so in dramatic fashion.

Down 27-21 and facing a fourth-and-14 with 1:26 to play, Gators redshirt freshman quarterback Will Grier hit Antonio Callaway for the game-winning 64-yard touchdown. Callaway, a true freshman, made a man miss and was freed up on a big clock from Brandon Powell to give Florida a 28-27 lead.

Here's how the big play sounded on Gator IMG Sports Network:

Tennessee had a chance for a game-winning field goal, but after some shaky time management, Aaron Medley’s 55-yard attempt sailed just right to give the Gators a wild win.

The Vols led nearly the entire game and looked to have the game in hand when a 10-yard Jalen Hurd (102 yards, 2 TDs) touchdown run opened up a 27-14 lead (Butch Jones curiously opted not to go for two) with 10:19 to play, but a Florida offense that had struggled all day responded. Grier led a 17-play, 86-yard drive that was capped off with a five-yard touchdown pass to Powell, cutting UT’s lead to 27-21 with 4:09 to play.

Tennessee’s next drive quickly went three-and-out, giving the Gators more than two minutes to take a lead. The Vols’ defense was up to the challenge at first – forcing a four-yard loss and back-to-back incomplete passes.

That set the stage for the dramatic Grier-to-Callaway connection, which gives Florida a surprising 4-0 record, including two SEC East wins, in year one under Jim McElwain.

The loss is another heartbreaker for Tennessee, which blew a double-digit second half lead for the second time in three weeks, dropping to 2-2 in the process.

Tennessee was a trendy pick to win the SEC East, but it is already off to a rough start with games against Arkansas, Georgia and Alabama on the horizon.

Special teams doom Texas for second consecutive week

$
0
0

For the second straight week, Texas’ special teams let it down.

And it resulted in a 30-27 loss to Oklahoma State.

Punter Michael Dickson took his eyes off the snap with Texas at the 24-yard line with 42 seconds remaining. The ball went through Dickson's hands and by the time he corralled it, Oklahoma State's defense was bearing down on him. So he shanked the ball out of bounds for a negative six-yard punt.

It was devastating.

After falling down early, Texas led the bulk of the game and kept an otherwise potent Oklahoma State offense fairly quiet. The Longhorns defense put together one of its best efforts of the season. It forced Oklahoma State into three turnovers and held the Cowboys running game to just 103 yards.

Late in the game, however, Texas was the victim of a couple of bad calls, which led to a game-tying field goal with 1:33 remaining.

Texas got the ball back at its 18-yard line and decided to play it conservative with called runs, two of which resulted in Oklahoma State sacks of quarterback Jerrod Heard.

The Longhorns appeared content to go into overtime.

But similar to what happened a week ago against Cal, the chance to play — and perhaps win — in overtime was thwarted by poor special teams play.

Last week, Heard drove the Longhorns the length of the field and scored in the final seconds only to have kicker Nick Rose miss the extra point.

Saturday’s shanked punt appeared equally as gutting.

Texas now falls to 1-3 on the season, its worse start since 1993 when it finished the year 5-5-1. Oklahoma State moves to 4-0 for the first time since 2011 when the team went 12-1.

TCU scores late to beat Texas Tech 55-52

$
0
0

Given the way that TCU's visit to Texas Tech had gone all Saturday, you knew it was bound to end with something crazy.

Those premonitions were fulfilled.

Trevone Boykin hit running back Aaron Green on a four-yard touchdown pass with 23 seconds left and a 55-52 win for the Horned Frogs. But it was no ordinary touchdown pass.

Boykin was looking for Josh Doctson, who tipped the ball into the air. Doctson was in the middle of the end zone and Green was in the back. Green dove and caught the ball and dragged his foot for the touchdown.

The touchdown was the game's 10th lead change. And it came on fourth down, as TCU had run the ball on the previous three downs inside the 10-yard-line to force Texas Tech to use its remaining timeouts and run as much time off the clock as possible to minimize the Red Raiders' chances of a game-tying field goal.

Texas Tech's final drive went nowhere until an offside penalty and roughing-the-passer call on what should have been the final play of the game. With an untimed down, Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes completed a pass underneath and a lateral frenzy began. It came up short, as the Red Raiders were only able to get to the 10-yard-line.

Perhaps even crazier than the touchdown pass was TCU coach Gary Patterson's gamble to rely on his defense in the last five minutes of the game. Facing a fourth down just outside the 50 and trailing 52-48, TCU elected to punt and attempt to pin Texas Tech deep. Given the plethora of points to that point, Patterson seemed to be simply relying on a hunch rather than the evidence presented in the first 55 minutes.

It worked. TCU forced a three-and-out and got the ball back with 3:11 left for its game-winning drive. But it certainly ran counter to the stall strategy that Patterson later utilized. Had TCU not converted the crazy fourth down play, Patterson's late-game strategy would have been severely criticized.

Boykin was targeting Doctson on the final play for good reason. The receiver had a monster game. He finished with 18 catches for 267 yards and three touchdowns (that all came in the first half). Green finished with 28 carries for 162 yards.

And most importantly for the Big 12's College Football Playoff chances, the Horned Frogs are undefeated (sorry, Texas Tech). The battle between TCU and Baylor and maybe Oklahoma is still on for the Big 12 title. Unless Texas Tech upsets Baylor in Week 5, which doesn't seem all that farfetched at this point. But to do so, the Red Raiders may have to score 60.

We're looking forward to seeing if they can. If this game is any indication, the Big 12 is going to be the land of offensive craziness once again.

Texas A&M uses fourth quarter comeback to beat Arkansas in OT

$

0

Texas A&M overcame a fourth quarter deficit to knock off Arkansas in overtime for a second straight season.

The Aggies trailed the Razorbacks 21-13 for most of the fourth quarter, but managed to tie the game at 21 on a Tra Carson two-yard touchdown run and a Kyle Allen to Josh Reynolds two-point conversion to force overtime.

Allen hit star freshman Christian Kirk for a 20-yard TD to open overtime and the Aggies sealed the win with a great play by defensive back De’Vante Harris to break up a Brandon Allen fourth-down pass.

The win came almost a year after the Aggies overcame a two-touchdown deficit to shock Arkansas in overtime 35-28 last September.

The Aggies almost didn’t need overtime this time around.

After Carson’s game-tying score, Arkansas used its powerful ground attack to quickly move toward midfield. When the Razorbacks finally looked to pass, A&M’s Myles Garrett came off the edge and strip-sacked Brandon Allen. The Aggies recovered at the Arkansas 46 with 1:04 to play and had a big opportunity to end it in regulation.

A roughing the passer call and two short Carson runs followed, allowing A&M to line up for a Taylor Bertolet 38-yard attempt, but he pushed it right to give Arkansas new life.

The Razorbacks were unable to take advantage. A&M scored on its second play of overtime and Arkansas’ possession in the extra frame got off to a rocky start with a false start penalty. Alex Collins gained six on first down, but the next three plays – all Brandon Allen passes – fell incomplete.

The win improves the A&M’s record to 4-0 and gets its SEC schedule off to a strong start. Of course, the Aggies know all about strong starts and how quickly they can go south. A 5-0 start in 2014 quickly disintegrated into three straight losses. Kevin Sumlin’s group has a chance to replicate that start with a home game against Mississippi State coming next before a bye week precedes games with Alabama and Ole Miss.

For Arkansas it’s another loss in a disappointing start to a season with high expectations. Bret Bielema has done plenty of talking, but hasn’t backed it up with three straight losses. The Razorbacks got back to their ground-and-pound brand of football against the Aggies, which should serve them well moving forward. Nonetheless, the Hogs have a lot of work to do to right the ship.

Winners and losers: Is UCLA the team to beat in the Pac-12 South?

$
0
0

Congratulations UCLA, you've established yourself as the favorite in the Pac-12 South.

The Bruins used an incredibly strong first half at Arizona to jump out to a 42-14 lead en route to a 56-30 win over the Wildcats. Not only was the win an important inter-division road win, it came as the Bruins entered the game without three defensive starters – including star LB Myles Jack – who are out for the year with season-ending injuries.

Entering the season you could make a legitimate case for four teams as Pac-12 South champions. UCLA was one of them, and now the Bruins have made the case as the top option so far.

The biggest question about UCLA entering the season was at the quarterback position. Freshman and former five-star recruit Josh Rosen was named the starter at the beginning of the season and played well through the first three games of the year. He continued the trend Saturday night, going 19 for 28 for 284 yards passing and two touchdowns.Jim Mora hugs quarterback Josh Rosen after UCLA's win over Arizona. (Getty)

Arizona opened the scoring in the first quarter when Anu Solomon hit Nate Phillips for a 34-yard score. The next four touchdowns were all UCLA's and were bookended by Rosen's touchdown passes. After Arizona made the score 28-14, UCLA scored 14 more points before halftime to put the game out of reach for the final 30 minutes.

It didn't help Arizona's cause that the team lost Solomon to an injury. He suffered what was an apparent head injury in the second quarter and didn't return.

And while UCLA is establishing itself as possibly the best team in the Pac-12 South, we're cognizant of the Bruins' final two games of 2015.

And we're not forgetting Utah. The Utes throttled Oregon on Saturday night. If we're saying UCLA is the favorite in the Pac-12 South, the Utes aren't far behind.

We're also not forgetting that UCLA visits Utah in the second-to-last week of the regular season. And following that game, the Bruins go to USC, who was the proverbial favorite in the South until a loss to Stanford in Week 3. It wouldn't be entirely surprising if UCLA lost either or both of those games.

But it wouldn't be surprising if the Bruins won them either. Coach Jim Mora has been stockpiling talent in Los Angeles through the past few recruiting classes and it was on display Saturday night despite the absences of a few key contributors. While the Bruins' defense may not be as good as it could be, the offense looks like it can help pick up the slack. And for Utah, well, maybe Oregon isn't as good as we thought it was. But damn, that was impressive.

Here are the rest of Week 4's Winners and Losers:

WINNERS

Amara Darboh, Michigan: Darboh, whose family fled civil war in Sierra Leone when he was a toddler, and who was later taken in by a family in Iowa after his parents were killed, became a U.S. citizen this week. He celebrated by having himself a game against BYU en route to a 31-0 Michigan win. He caught four balls for 57 yards, hauled in a touchdown, and pulled the nifty grab below out of his backpocket. It was a good week.

Josh Doctson, TCU: TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin completed 34 passes in a thrilling 55-52 win over Texas Tech, and more than half of them were to senior wideout Josh Doctson. The 6-foot-3 Doctson hauled in a whopping 18 passes for 267 yards and three touchdowns. Doctson's three touchdowns – all in the first half – went for nine, 52, and five yards. Doctson also played a key role on TCU's game-winning touchdown by tipping Boykin's pass in the air and into the arms of Aaron Green.

Bowling Green: The Falcons are off to a 2-2 start, but with two wins over Power 5 schools, both in the Big Ten, no less. Granted, Saturday’s win was a 35-28 nail-biter over Purdue, and the previous was a 48-27 win over Maryland, but those are resume builders Bowling Green will take. Furthermore, the Falcons have more wins against Big Ten teams in 2015 than Purdue has managed in the last three seasons. Perhaps more relevant is how close Bowling Green was to clipping Memphis in a 44-41 loss last week. It’s shaping up to be a nice season.

Brandon Doughty, Western Kentucky: Western Kentucky's Brandon Doughty threw for more than 400 yards for his third consecutive game, this time totaling 457 yards and six touchdowns in a 56-14 beatdown of Miami (Ohio). Doughty was a big reason WKU jumped out to a huge 49-7 halftime lead. In the first two quarters, the senior threw for 381 yards and five touchdowns, allowing the team to cruise to a win. Through four games, Doughty now has 1,591 yards and 11 touchdowns for the 3-1 Hilltoppers.

Anthony Zettel, Penn State: Penn State’s Anthony Zettel played with a heavy heart on Saturday. Zettel’s father died Friday night after a 19-month bout with cancer. He was 46. With his father on his mind, Zettel, a senior defensive tackle, had a big day for the Nittany Lions, racking up seven tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and a fumble recovery in Penn State’s 37-21 win over San Diego State. PSU coach James Franklin said it was Zettel’s decision to play on Saturday.

“That was up to him,” Franklin said. “I felt like that’s what his family – his dad – would’ve wanted him to do.”

LOSERS

UCF: How did it get to this? We've featured the Knights in our Losers section before, so UCF's inclusion shouldn't be a surprise. But man, it's ugly. The Knights took an early lead on South Carolina before losing on Saturday. UCF is now 0-4. Normally losing to South Carolina is no big deal, but this South Carolina team isn't nearly as good as previous iterations. Unfortunately for UCF fans, the same can be said for the Knights. The AAC isn't incredibly tough, but with games against Temple, Cincinnati, Houston and others, six wins for bowl eligibility seems impossible to accomplish at the moment.

Georgia Tech: Oh boy, what happened to the Yellow Jackets? Duke is a good team, but if Georgia Tech was a legitimate contender for another berth in the ACC Championship Game, the Yellow Jackets should have taken care of business. Now, after two straight losses, it's reasonable to think that Georgia Tech isn't even a contender for the ACC Coastal let alone for a second-straight New Year's Six Bowl. Given the way that Georgia's seasons have gone under Mark Richt, however, we won't be surprised if Georgia Tech gets the win to spoil Georgia's season.

BYU's offense: We totally understand if BYU was gassed after the first three weeks. Games against Nebraska, Boise State and UCLA are tough for any team. But man,  Saturday against Michigan got ugly. The Cougars barely got more than 100 yards of total offense. Quarterback Tanner Mangum, who looked like a potential star through the first three games, averaged two yards per pass attempt on Saturday. No, that's not a typo. The Cougars' schedule gets easier from here on out and don't be surprised to see them in the top 25 in the next few weeks as other teams lose. But Saturday wasn't pretty.

Auburn: The Auburn quarterback change from Jeremy Johnson to Sean White worked wonders, didn't it? The Tigers lost to Mississippi State 17-9, though it's not as simple as pinning the loss on poor quarterback play. White finished the game 20-of-28 passing for 188 yards and an interception. He wasn't the rushing threat that Johnson is, however, as he had 11 carries for 29 yards. After sneaking out wins against Louisville and Jacksonville State, Auburn is now 2-2. Are the Tigers fighting for the middle of the pack in the SEC West or simply trying to stay out of last? We're about to find out.

Matt Johns, Virginia: Matt Johns found out early on what kind of game he would have Friday night against Boise State. Johns was intercepted by Justin Taimatuia – a 300-pound defensive tackle – on Virginia’s first play from scrimmage. Taimatuia brought the interception back 21 yards for a touchdown. It was the first of three interceptions in the game and one of two pick-sixes in a miserable night for Johns and the Cavaliers, who lost 56-14 at home to drop to 1-3 on the year. Johns finished the night completing 12-of-25 for 199 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. He also had an intentional grounding penalty in the end zone, resulting in a safety.

Utah makes statement, destroys Oregon 62-20

(Photo by Steve Dykes/Getty Images)Utah made a statement at Oregon on Saturday night and did so emphatically.

The 18th-ranked Utes traveled to Eugene and completely demolished the No. 13 Ducks in a 62-20 win. It was a complete performance from Utah on offense, defense and special teams.

Senior quarterback Travis Wilson, who was dealing with a shoulder sprain, led the way for the Utes, combining for 337 total yards (227 passing, 100 rushing) and five touchdowns – four through the air and one on the ground. On the whole, the Utah offense racked up 530 yards and at one point scored on eight consecutive possessions.

Meanwhile, Utah’s stout defense forced three punts on Oregon’s first three possessions and also caused three turnovers. Overall the Utes limited Oregon’s high-powered offense to only 20 points – 30 fewer than the team’s season average.

On top of that, the Utes added a highlight-reel punt return touchdown reminiscent of a decoy play used by the St. Louis Rams last season. As Oregon punted, Utah’s usual punt returner, Britain Covey, sprinted in the opposite direction of the ball and pretended he was about to field the punt. Most of the Oregon players fell for it, allowing Boobie Hobbs to easily return the kick 69 yards for a touchdown down the other sideline.

The punt return touchdown put the bow on top of a spectacular performance for the Utes – one that established them as serious contenders in the Pac-12.

Year in and year out, the Utes have been good, but not great, in Pac-12 play. This year, led by the steady play of Wilson and Devontae Booker on offense and stellar all-around play on defense, the Utes look like they are ready to make that next step.

It won’t be easy, especially with fellow undefeated team UCLA in the same division, but the Utes, now 4-0, are for real. There’s no doubt about it.

The loss puts Oregon in an unfamiliar place – 2-2 after four weeks. Quarterback Vernon Adams has been dealing with a broken finger and was benched early in favor of Jeff Lockie. Lockie couldn’t get anything going for the Ducks either and it looks like Mark Helfrich will have a quarterback decision to make. To make matters worse, Ducks star receiver Byron Marshall was carted off the field in the first half with a leg injury.

Luckily, Oregon has the chance to regroup with two Pac-12 bottom feeders Colorado and Washington State on the schedule in the next few weeks.

Athlon Sports' most interesting stats from Week 4

Dr. Saturday Athlon Sports stats of the weekendNumbers and statistics are a huge part of college football. Every Sunday, reading updated box scores and stats is like Christmas for fans and media members. Some stats like total offense and total defense are overrated, but each help paint a picture for a team or particular game.

Whether the stats are historic, advanced or just an observation from a box score, Athlon Sports brings the most intriguing, important, historic and bizarre stats from around the weekend of college football action:

62: Points Scored by Utah in Victory Over Oregon

Utah turned in one of the most impressive performances of Week 4, thoroughly dominating Oregon 62-20 in Eugene. The 62 points scored by the Utes were the most by any road opponent in Autzen Stadium history. All three sides of the ball were critical in scoring the upset, as the offense averaged 7.2 yards per play, the defense held the Ducks to 13 points in the first half, and the special teams duo of kicker Andy Phillips and punter Tom Hackett delivered with key plays.

0-9: Arkansas’ Record Under Bret Bielema in Games Decided by 7 Points or Less

Arkansas was considered a team on the rise entering 2015. But after four games, the Razorbacks might be lucky just to get to a bowl game. Winning close games has been a problem for this program under third-year coach Bret Bielema, as the Razorbacks are 0-9 in matchups decided by a touchdown or less. The bad luck (or inability?) to win close games continued in Week 4, as Arkansas fell 28-21 to Texas A&M in overtime.

200+: Back-to-back 200-Yard Games by LSU RB Leonard Fournette

Another Saturday, another impressive performance from LSU running back Leonard Fournette. The sophomore rushed for 244 yards and two scores on 26 attempts in LSU’s 34-24 victory at Syracuse. Fournette’s back-to-back 200-yard games are the first in program history, and the sophomore’s 631 yards through three games is the best mark by a FBS rusher in the last 15 years.

1,357 and 107: Combined Yards and Points in TCU’s 55-52 Win Over Texas Tech

As expected, TCU and Texas Tech provided plenty of offensive fireworks in Week 4. The Red Raiders and Horned Frogs combined for 1,357 total yards and 107 overall points in the thrilling 55-52 win by TCU. The box score is a dream for fans of offense, as these two teams combined for only seven punts, nearly 900 passing yards and 70 first downs.

3.6: Tennessee’s Average Yards Per Play in Second Half Games Against Oklahoma and Florida

Tennessee is just a couple of plays away from a 4-0 record. However, the Volunteers have sputtered on offense in the second half of games against Florida and Oklahoma. Excluding overtime versus the Sooners, Tennessee ran 68 plays in the final two quarters against the Gators and Sooners and mustered only 245 total yards and 10 points. Whether the play-calling is too conservative or personnel issues are too much to overcome, the Volunteers left a lot to be desired on offense in two very winnable games. And as mentioned by ESPN’s Dari Nowkhah on Saturday night, FBS teams are 188-3 when leading by 13 points in the fourth quarter this season. Two of those losses belong to Tennessee.

5: Rushing Touchdowns Needed by Navy QB Keenan Reynolds to Set FBS Record

Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds is closing in on former Wisconsin running back Montee Ball’s FBS rushing touchdown record after scoring three times on the ground in Week 4. In the Midshipmen’s 28-18 win over UConn, Reynolds led the way for Navy’s offense, recording 142 yards and three scores on the ground, while completing three of four passes for 40 yards and a touchdown. Reynolds ranks No. 2 in FBS history with 73 rushing scores and needs five more to break Ball’s record (77).

31: Consecutive Road Losses by Kansas

Kansas’ struggles on the road continued on Saturday, as the Jayhawks lost 27-14 to Rutgers to drop to 0-3 under new coach David Beaty. The loss against the Scarlet Knights was the 31st consecutive defeat by this program in road games. The 31-game road losing streak is the longest since 1978, surpassing Kansas State and Akron’s 30-game mark. Barring a surprise upset, the Jayhawks are headed for an 0-12 record this season.

105: Total Yards Allowed by Michigan Against BYU

Lost in Harbaugh mania in Ann Arbor has been the play of Michigan’s defense through the first four games of 2015. This unit delivered a dominant performance against BYU, limiting the Cougars to just 105 overall yards, zero points and a 4 of 15 mark on third-down attempts. BYU crossed midfield only three times on 12 possessions and never reached Michigan’s 40-yard line.

440: Average Passing Yards a Game by Bowling Green QB Matt Johnson

Bowling Green’s “Falcon Fast” offense has been flying high in 2015. Johnson has recorded four straight 400-yard games to open the season and has 13 passing scores through the first four contests. Johnson is averaging 440 passing yards per game and has 1,760 overall so far. Assuming the Falcons win the MAC East and play in a bowl, Johnson has 10 remaining contests in 2015 and needs to average around 410 passing yards a game to break the FBS single-season record held by former Texas Tech quarterback B.J. Symons.

12: Georgia RB Nick Chubb’s Consecutive Games of 100 Rushing Yards

While most of the nation focuses on LSU running back Leonard Fournette, Chubb quietly continues to post big numbers for the Bulldogs. In an easy win over Southern, the sophomore rushed for 131 yards on 15 carries, which was his 12th consecutive 100-yard performance. Chubb is one 100-yard game away from tying the school mark by Herschel Walker. Of course, getting No. 13 won’t be easy with Alabama up next for Georgia in Week 5.

Alabama listed as underdog at Georgia for first time since 2009

Georgia is breaking a streak.

Alabama opened as an underdog to the Bulldogs for the teams' Week 5 clash on Saturday. It's the first time Alabama has opened as an underdog to an opponent since 2009. It's a streak of 72 straight games. The Dogs opened as two-point favorites according to BetOnline.ag and SportsBetting.ag.

Georgia, led by sophomore running back Nick Chubb, is 4-0 and ranked in the top 10. Alabama, 3-1, is a week removed from its home loss to Ole Miss. The Tide handily beat Louisiana-Monroe in Week 4 but the offense still didn't look incredibly sharp. Georgia easily dispatched FCS opponent Southern.

According to Al.com, Alabama had been at least a 2.5-point favorite in those 72 games and has only been a single-digit favorite in 17 of them. The last time Alabama was an underdog was the 2009 SEC Championship Game against Florida. Alabama won that game 32-13 and went on to win the BCS Championship over Texas.

Alabama's record straight up during the streak was 62-10.

The Bulldogs are currently the favorites in the SEC East after the rest of the divison has looked vulnerable through the first four weeks of the season. A loss for Georgia wouldn't be as devastating as a loss would be for Alabama. With a second loss in three weeks, Alabama would likely be in a position to win out to not only win the SEC West but to have any shot of sniffing a berth in the College Football Playoff.

The game kicks at 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS.

Members of the Southern and Georgia training staff tend to Southern wide receiver Devon Gales (33) after he was injured in the second half of an NCAA college football game against Georgia Saturday, Sept. 26, 2015, in Athens , Ga. Gales was placed on backboard and taken off the field on a cart. (AP Photo/John Bazemore)Southern University wide receiver Devon Gales remains hospitalized in Athens, Ga., Monday after suffering a spinal injury in Saturday’s game at Georgia.

According to a statement from the university, Gales had successful surgery on Sunday afternoon to stabilize “several fractures in his neck.” The school said Gales has “movement in his upper body and remains in good spirits.” He will stay at Athens Regional Hospital “until he is released to return to Baton Rouge for further treatment.”

The injury occurred while Gales, a redshirt sophomore, was blocking on a third quarter kickoff return.

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Gales’ parents were flown into Athens from Louisiana “at UGA’s expense on Saturday night, then driven to Athens by Georgia staff.” Additionally, Southern’s team doctor, head athletics trainer and compliance director all stayed with Gales in Athens after the game.

Bulldogs head coach Mark Richt and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer visited Gales at the hospital on Sunday.

“We’re trying to cover him up with as much love as we can, and let him know that we care, let him know that we’re here to help,” Richt said per the AJC. “We’re just gonna continue to pray, and I know the Bulldog nation is behind him as well. There may come a time where there may be some needs. Not exactly sure yet. But it does come to that I’m going to be calling all Dawgs to get involved and to help out.”

In its statement, Southern expressed gratitude to Georgia for the school’s help during this situation.

The Gales family, along with Interim Athletics Director Roman Banks and the entire Southern University family, would like to thank Athens General, The University of Georgia and all of the many people who aided in his care during this unfortunate event. We are extremely thankful for all of the prayers and well wishes that Devon has received from many people nationwide.

Also, special thanks to the Georgia football program and Sports Medicine staff for all of their love and support that they have shown Devon during this difficult time.

Due to the overwhelming amount of love shown to them from everyone, the family is asking for privacy at this time. They appreciate and request your continued prayers and thoughts.

Fresno State QB Ford Childress 'likely' out for the year

Fresno State Bulldogs head coach Tim DeRuyter speaks with officials during the first half of an NCAA college football game against the UNLV Rebels Friday, Oct. 10, 2014, in Las Vegas. (AP Photo/John Locher)The hits keep coming for Fresno State quarterbacks.

Junior Ford Childress – the third quarterback to start this season for the Bulldogs – suffered an “internal injury” during Saturday’s loss to San Jose State. According to the Fresno Bee, Childress had surgery Sunday morning is “likely to miss the rest of the season.”

“Sometimes when it rains, it pours,” head coach Tim DeRuyter said, per the Bee. “But you know what, no one is going to feel sorry for the ‘Dogs so we better not feel sorry for ourselves either. We have to just buckle up and find a way.”

The Bulldogs previously lost freshman Chason Virgil to a season-ending clavicle injury in last weekend’s loss to Utah. To make matters worse, redshirt sophomore Zack Greenlee was suspended for the SJSU game following an arrest for public drunkenness.

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

Those setbacks forced Childress, a West Virginia transfer, into the starting lineup Saturday night. Childress threw for 159 yards, two touchdowns and an interception on 19-of-32 throwing against the Spartans. DeRuyter said Childress “did not remember” which hit caused the injury.

From the Bee:

He told DeRuyter while being treated by medical personnel that he did not remember taking a hit during the game to cause the injury, but when the team returned from San Jose about 3 a.m., Childress was unable to get off the bus.

“(Quarterback) Kilton (Anderson) was back there with him, and I’m up front and he comes and says, ‘Coach, we need a trainer’ so we called (athletic trainer Tony Hill) and he can’t get up, his stomach is hurting,” DeRuyter said. “We had the doctors there, so they get the ambulance and they took him to Community Medical Center.”

According to the Bee, Greenlee is expected to return from his suspension to start the Bulldogs’ next game at San Diego State. Greenlee started the first two games of the season, but was replaced by Virgil for the Utah game. Greenlee has thrown for 313 yards, six touchdowns and one interception on the season, but has completed only 50 percent of his passes.

With Virgil and Childress out, Fresno has only redshirt freshman Kilton Anderson and freshman walk-on Jesse Hanckel behind Greenlee on the roster. Anderson saw his first career action Saturday night and rushed for 20 yards on two attempts.

The 49-23 to San Jose State dropped the Bulldogs to 1-3 on the season.
