Georgia Tech middle linebacker Beau Hankins wrote on Twitter that he has quit the team.

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson confirmed the departure.

Hankins, a junior who is originally from Birmingham, Ala., did not play in Saturday’s loss to Duke. He did play in the two previous games and had three tackles.

Hankins becomes the second middle linebacker to leave the team this year. Anthony Harrell transferred to Florida in the offseason. Hankins and Harrell were in competition to become the starter during the spring.

With Hankins gone, senior Tyler Marcordes will be the top middle linebacker when the Yellow Jackets play a 4-3 set.

Arizona State unveils another alternate uniform (Photos)

Arizona State may not be playing very well this season, but at least it has cool uniforms!

Two days after a 42-14 home loss to USC, the Sun Devils unveiled yet another new uniform – an alternate look called “Be the Hammer.” The uniform is “centered around a steel gray color scheme” and is “accentuated with polished copper detailing, which pays homage to (Arizona’s) nickname and recognition as the ‘Copper State.’”

According to a release from the program, the new Adidas combination is “inspired by the team’s tradition of using a sledge hammer emblazoned with the pitchfork to break a rock after big accomplishments.”

ASU made the switch from Nike to Adidas this year.

The Sun Devils will debut the “Be the Hammer” helmet and pants along with their “Desert Ice” white uniform top on Saturday at No. 7 UCLA.

The all-white “Desert Ice” uniforms were unveiled in late August and worn in the team’s season opener against Texas A&M on Sept. 5, a 38-17 loss.

After Saturday’s loss to USC, the Sun Devils dropped to 2-2 on the season.

Kentucky to honor program's first 4 black players with statues

(Spruce Derden - USA TODAY Sports)The University of Kentucky will honor its first black football players with statues outside Commonwealth Stadium.

According to The Courier-Journal, Nate Northington and Greg Page, who became the program’s (and SEC’s) first two black players in 1967, along with Wilbur Hackett and Houston Hogg – the first black players to finish their careers at Kentucky – will all be honored.

The news was announced Friday when Northington and Page were inducted into the UK Athletics Hall of Fame.

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

Wildcats athletic director Mitch Barnhart told The Courier-Journal that the statues are "the right thing to do."

“It’s the right thing to do. It’s four guys that changed the face of college athletics, especially in the South, and it’s a story of courage and a story of honor,” Barnhart said. “So to have an opportunity to let that be the face of our football program going forward is a remarkable thing. You can put your mascot out there and that’s all good – and we’ve done that on one side of campus – but I don’t know if there’s anything more unique than something that changes culture and changes society and changes the way people think, and these four guys did that.”

Page tragically died after suffering a neck injury in practice and never played for the Wildcats. Northington became the first black player to appear in an SEC game but later left school following the death of Page, his close friend.

Paul Karem, a former Kentucky quarterback who is leading the effort to release a documentary about the four players called “Black in Blue,” said Northington was “speechless” when he learned about the statues.

“Could hardly talk when he got up to make his speech, said it’s always been a dream,” Karem said. “He said right after he left school, somebody told him the experiment of African-Americans in the SEC was a failure. And then he said, ‘Now it doesn’t look like a failure to me.’ ”

The life-sized statues are scheduled to be unveiled next fall alongside the completion of UK’s new practice facility.

The injury bug has struck TCU once again.

Receiver Ty Slanina suffered a broken collarbone during Saturday’s win against Texas Tech and will miss the rest of the season, coach Gary Patterson announced.

Slanina caught two passes for 32 yards prior to his injury and had nine receptions for 102 yards. He was scheduled to undergo surgery Monday.

Sophomore receiver Emmanuel Porter also will miss a few weeks after being injured in the Tech game. He had one catch for 11 yards against the Red Raiders and four catches for 78 yards this season.

These injuries are just the latest for a Horned Frog team that has been ravaged by them already this season. TCU also will go into this week’s game against Texas missing six defensive starters.

Eastern Kentucky DL Joseph Kraemer killed in weekend car accident

Eastern Kentucky defensive lineman Joseph Kraemer was killed in a single-car accident Sunday morning.

"The news that we lost one of our own is devastating to me, our team and our coaches," EKU coach Dean Hood said in a statement. "We pray that God will give strength to Joey's family during their time of mourning.  Joey will truly be missed by all of us he touched, not only because of what he accomplished on the football field, but because of who he was as a person and the impact he made on our lives."

Coroner Jimmy Cornelison told Kentucky.com that Kraemer’s truck left the road and struck a tree. Because of the heavy damage to the car, Cornelison speculated that speed was a factor in the crash. He also said Kraemer died instantly around 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning.

An off duty firefighter saw Kraemer’s truck from the main road around 8 a.m. Sunday and called for help.

Kraemer, 19, transferred to Eastern Kentucky in August after spending a redshirt season at UTEP. He was eligible to play at Eastern Kentucky, but had not appeared in any games.

"Our Colonel family is hurting today," EKU president Michael Benson said in a statement.  "Together, we will share our EKU pride in Joey's memory and honor. Please join me in expressing our sympathies to the Kraemer family in this time of sorrow."

Marquise Williams will remain UNC's starting QB

For those worried about the quarterbacking situation at North Carolina, don’t be.

Coach Larry Fedora said Monday that Marquise Williams is still the starting quarterback despite a poor performance against Delaware last weekend.

"I don't want to start some type of controversy, because there's not one,” coach Larry Fedora said.

Williams completed just 6 of 12 passes for 65 yards during the first half against Delaware and Mitch Trubisky replaced him during the final drive of the first half. Williams did not take a snap in the second half of the 41-14 win.

Trubisky completed 17 of 20 passes for 312 yards and four touchdowns.

Fedora said he made the move in an effort to spark his team, which led just 13-7 at the half. He said he spoke to Williams about the move and the team is ready to move forward to this week’s game against Georgia Tech.

"[Williams] knows that I have complete confidence in him," Fedora said.

Florida players dealing with flu bug ahead of Ole Miss matchup

$

Florida’s biggest injury worry heading into Saturday’s game against Ole Miss is the flu.

Coach Jim McElwain said Monday that nine players are fighting flu symptoms on what was ironically flu shot day.

Obviously our timing is impeccable," McElwain said. “So we're gonna struggle today we've got some guys getting IV's already, we had a bunch in yesterday and a bunch of guys today. Obviously, I don't think this runs its course but it hurts in preparation, but that's okay. It is something we have to deal with.”

McElwain didn’t name the nine infected players, but with players in such close quarters, they might not be the only ones infected before Saturday’s game. And that’s not exactly great news considering the Gators have No. 2 Ole Miss coming into Gainesville on Saturday.

McElwain also said the quarterback situation is once again up in the air for the Ole Miss game despite starter Will Grier leading the team to a come-from-behind win against Tennessee last weekend.

"You know we'll see, we'll see how it goes this week in practice,” McElwain said of his starting QB. “I thought Will did some real good things in the game but there's some things he's got to get better at, too."

Backup Treon Harris returns this week after serving a one-game suspension for violating team rules.

Florida State running back Mario Pender (7) makes a catch prior to an NCAA college football game in Boston, Friday, Sept. 18, 2015. (AP Photo/Charles Krupa)Florida State will be without second-string running back Mario Pender this weekend against Wake Forest.

According to Warchant.com, Pender suffered a collapsed lung during practice last Tuesday and remains hospitalized. Seminoles head coach Jimbo Fisher said Monday that the junior could possibly be released from the hospital on Monday.

“I’m not a doctor, but his lung was fine and they still had a little bit they had to inflate back to,” Fisher said per the Orlando Sentinel. “He definitely won’t play this weekend.”

Pender is Florida State’s primary backup behind Dalvin Cook and has 140 yards and a touchdown on 30 carries so far this season. He rushed for 206 yards and four touchdowns while catching 10 passes for 56 yards and another score in 2014.

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

Fisher was unsure if Pender would be able to return for the Oct. 10 game against Miami.

With Pender out, Fisher said Johnathan Vickers and Jacques Patrick “are ready” to contribute against Wake Forest. Vickers, a 6-foot-1, 215-pound sophomore caught a 24-yard touchdown in the season opener against Texas State. Patrick, a 6-foot-1, 232-pound freshman, has three carries for 13 yards this season.

The Seminoles, now ranked No. 11, are 3-0 this season headed into Saturday’s ACC contest at Wake Forest (2-2).

Former Florida State quarterback De’Andre Johnson will go to trial for assault after there was a disagreement over his plea deal Monday, according to the Tallahassee Democrat.

According to the paper, a plea deal was in place, but the two parties could not agree where he would serve his 10-day sheriff’s work program.

The plea deal also called for Johnson to plead guilty, pay court fees and pay restitution to the victim.

Johnson is accused of striking a female patron at a Tallahassee nightclub on June 24. He was initially suspended indefinitely from the program but was dismissed when the Florida State Attorney’s office released security footage of the incident.

Jury selection for the trial is set for Dec. 10 and the trial will begin Dec. 11.

Johnson enrolled at East Mississippi Community College in August in hopes of restarting his collegiate career. However, he is not playing for the team this season.

Arizona LB Scooby Wright out 'several weeks,' QB Anu Solomon 'day-to-day'

TUCSON, AZ - SEPTEMBER 26: Linebacker Scooby Wright III #33 of the Arizona Wildcats walks on the field during the first quarter of the college football game against the UCLA Bruins at Arizona Stadium on September 26, 2015 in Tucson, Arizona. (Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images)Arizona star linebacker Scooby Wright is injured again.

Wildcats coach Rich Rodriguez told reporters Monday that Wright will miss “several weeks” with a foot sprain. Wright, the 2014 Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, suffered a meniscus tear in a Week 1 win over UTSA on Sept. 3, but was able to return to action over the weekend against UCLA, a 56-30 Arizona loss.

Rodriguez said Wright’s knee was fine, but he “came down wrong” on his right foot against the Bruins. The team feared the foot was broken, but testing revealed a sprain. If the foot was broken, the team would have likely pursued a redshirt for Wright, Rodriguez said.

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

Wright, a junior, registered 163 tackles, 29 tackles for loss, 14 sacks and six forced fumbles en route to All-American honors in 2014.

Behind Wright, Arizona is thin at middle linebacker. Senior Cody Ippolito was expected to be Wright’s backup while also seeing playing time at strong side linebacker, but suffered a season-ending knee injury in August. Additionally, Haden Gregory, who started for Wright against Nevada, is out for a few weeks with a knee injury.

With both Wright and Haden out, walk-on Tre Tyler started against Northern Arizona on Sept. 19.

In addition to the injury to Wright, starting quarterback Anu Solomon suffered a concussion against UCLA. Rodriguez said Solomon is “day-to-day” and had no update on his status for Saturday’s game at Stanford. If Solomon cannot play, Rodriguez said senior Jerrard Randall and redshirt freshman Brandon Dawkins are candidates to fill in.

The loss to UCLA over the weekend dropped the Wildcats to 3-1 on the season.

Air Force could get CB Gavin McHenry back for Navy

Air Force cornerback Gavin McHenry could return to the field against Navy on Saturday.

The school told the Colorado Springs Gazette that McHenry had recently completed his six months of conduct/aptitude probation.

From the Gazette:

McHenry lost his good standing as the result of an undisclosed incident in March. According to the academy, "he was restricted from participation in intercollegiate athletic competitions, club events, or musical and theater performances. His probation requirements included journaling, mentoring, counseling and initially restricted to the cadet area."

He started six games at cornerback in 2014 and all 12 of the team's games in 2013 as a sophomore. He's been replaced in the starting lineup in 2015 by Kalon Baker and Roland Ladipo. Ladipo has 21 tackles and an interception and Baker has 12 tackles and a pick.

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

"He's a great guy and it's great to have him back on the team," Ladipo told the Gazette about McHenry. "He handled the situation really well. He addressed the team as a whole, told everybody the situation and what was going on, and I think he handled it really well. It just goes to show that you might put yourself in a hole, but you have to dig your way out."

The game against Navy is part of the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy series. The winner of the games among Air Force, Army and Navy gets the trophy and is honored at the White House. Air Force, which won the series in 2014 for the first time since 2011, leads the series 20-17-6 over Navy and Army.

(Photo by Maddie Meyer/Getty Images)The injuries continue to pile up for Boston College.

Eagles head coach Steve Addazio announced Monday that Jon Hilliman, the team’s top running back, is out indefinitely due to a fractured foot. Hilliman, who was injured during Saturday’s 17-14 win over Northern Illinois, had surgery on the foot on Sunday, Addazio said. Hilliman, a sophomore, rushed for 119 yards and a touchdown in the win.

Addazio said he was surprised by the severity of the injury.

“I just really thought we were dealing with some sort of foot sprain,” Addazio said, per the Boston Globe. “I had no idea after I left my (postgame) press conference that I was going to find out he had a fracture. He’ll be back, but it’s going to be an extended period of time.”

The 6-foot, 224-pound Hilliman leads the team with 198 yards this year. He rushed for 860 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2014.

Hilliman’s injury is a big blow considering the array of injuries for the Eagles at running back. According to EagleAction.com, Marcus Outlow (18 carries, 98 yards, TD), Tyler Rouse (28 carries, 161 yards, 5 TDs) and Myles Willis (18 carries, 122 yards) are all banged up as well. Outlow and Willis are both dealing with shoulder injuries while Rouse briefly left the NIU game with a head injury, but was able to return to action.

Boston College has also lost quarterback Darius Wade (leg) and tight end Mike Giacone (knee), both starters, to season-ending injuries.

The 3-1 Eagles play Duke (3-1) on the road on Saturday.

Report: Eastern Michigan loses $3,000 in beer sales trial run

$

0

Eastern Michigan’s trial run of selling beer was a bust.

According to The Eastern Echo, the student newspaper, the school lost $3,000 in its pilot attempt during the Sept. 19 game against Ball State.

Eastern Michigan paid about $7,000 for the beer, the setup and the increased security to thwart rowdiness, but only netted about $4,000 after selling 559 16-ounce beers for $7 each.

It probably didn’t help that the contest against Ball State was the lowest attended of the Eagles' three home contests this year. Only 4,463 people showed up as opposed to the more than 6,000 fans that have attended games against Old Dominion and Army.

Greg Steiner, assistant athletics director for media relations, told the paper the school has no plans to sell beer during any other games this season.

Athletic Director Heather Lyke said despite the loss, the trial run did give Eastern Michigan a chance to evaluate whether it would be profitable to sell beer during games in the future.

“The pilot program gave us a wonderful opportunity to learn and we will take that experience to help us only make it better as we move forward,” Lyke said. “We continue to have discussions about it and will examine different business plans that could allow us to do something more permanent in the future.”

Troy-South Alabama rivalry now has championship belt (Photo)

$

The in-state rivalry between South Alabama and Troy now has a name and a trophy.

The two Sun Belt foes will square off Saturday in the “Battle For The Belt,” with a brand new championship belt on the line.

The belt will be presented to the winning team after the game. Moving forward, the belt will feature the scores of games from the series moving forward.

The student government associations from the two schools created the rivalry’s new name and championship belt. And though the rivalry is only a few years old (it began in 2012), the schools, which are about three hours apart, already consider one another to be their biggest rival.

"In the hearts of students, Troy has always been our biggest rival. The 'Battle for the Belt' is the culmination of those passions," South Alabama Student Government Association President Ravi Rajendra said. "The introduction of the trophy to the rivalry will offer a new way for Jag Nation to connect with our football program. The concept behind the Belt stemmed from our student body and was accompanied by insight from our football team; the football team really liked the concept of a wrestling belt, and the Belt also plays off of the Sun Belt Conference of which both Troy and USA are members."

Players and coaches are on board with the move.

“I like it,” Troy running back Brandon Burks said, per the Montgomery Advertiser. “After they (South Alabama) lose this time, when they try to win it next time, it will be better.”

Added Troy coach Neal Brown: “it’s a natural rivalry game. It’s a game where a lot of our guys know theirs, and vice versa. We’re close in proximity. We play in the same conference. We battle on the recruiting front a lot. I think it’s worthy of a trophy.”

Athletic directors from both schools voiced their approval for the game’s new stakes and the initiative shown by the student governments.

"We deeply appreciate and support this initiative by the student leadership of these two great universities," said South Alabama AD Dr. Joel Erdmann. "Rivalry trophies — or in our case the rivalry belt — seem most effective when created through a legitimate grassroots effort that enhances the emotional connection to the game.  We look forward to Saturday as we battle for the belt."

Added Troy’s Jeremy McClain: “The student government bodies on each campus should be commended for their work in making this a reality.  I am a firm believer that a strong rivalry makes each institution better, and I look forward to many years of intense, respectful competition between Troy University and the University of South Alabama."

With both teams now in the Sun Belt, the rivalry will be played on a yearly basis. Troy won the first two meetings in the series in 2012 and 2013 (a 34-33 finish that came down to the wire), while South Alabama won last year’s contest, 27-13.

Troy is 1-2 on the season with a win over Charleston Southern and losses to NC State and Wisconsin. South Alabama dropped to 2-2 last weekend with a loss to NC State that followed wins over Gardner-Webb and San Diego State and a loss at Nebraska.

Saturday night’s game at Troy’s Veterans Memorial Stadium kicks off at 7 p.m. ET.

Auburn sticking with Sean White as starting QB

(Photo by Daniel Shirey/Getty Images)Auburn will stick with Sean White at quarterback when it hosts San Jose State on Saturday.

White, a redshirt freshman, made his first career start over the weekend against Mississippi State. White completed 20-of-28 passes for 188 yards and an interception in a 17-9 home loss.

Despite the mixed results, Malzahn was happy with how White performed in his first appearance.

“I really feel like he’s earned that,” Malzahn said of the decision to start White. “If you take away the red zone struggles, we felt like we got better on the offensive side of the football.”

Malzahn made the move to start White after benching junior Jeremy Johnson. Plenty of hype surrounded Johnson heading into the season, but he struggled with six interceptions through three games.

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

On a Monday night radio appearance, Malzahn said he was pleased with White’s vision as a passer – something Johnson struggled with this season.

"My experience is some guys have good vision and some guys have trouble with vision," Malzahn said per Al.com. "Sean is one of those guys that he sees the field pretty well and I thought he did a really good job for his first time out going through his progressions."

The loss to Mississippi State dropped the Tigers to 2-2 (0-2 SEC) on the season.

Big 12 says 'vast majority' of calls in Texas-OSU game were correct

$
0
0

While several Texas fans — and even some impartial viewers — were dismayed about the officiating during the Texas-Oklahoma State game last week, Big 12 supervisor of football officials Walt Anderson didn’t share those same feelings.

In fact, after reviewing the game film, Anderson acknowledged there were some errors, but said he was pleased overall with the effort.

“I’ve been working on that [Texas game] all day. I’ve seen the whole tape,” Anderson told the Austin American-Statesman. “I evaluate every play, and I think we got the vast majority right. The good news was the vast majority of fouls were there and correctly called. Unfortunately, a couple of them were missed, and we’ll correct that. I’ve never seen one perfectly officiated, and I’m not expecting to do so.”

The officiating crew, led by Alan Eck, assessed 16 penalties against Texas in the 30-27 loss, which included a penalty against Texas coach Charlie Strong. Of Strong’s penalty, Anderson said, “things that were said. Some things rise to the level they’re not acceptable.”

Strong played dumb when asked about his comments during Monday’s press conference.

As noted by Brian Davis of the Austin American-Statesman, Eck’s crew threw a season-high 11 flags against the Longhorns in last year’s Oklahoma game. In eight other Big 12 games, officials called an average of 5.8 penalties against Strong’s team.

While it’s easy to look at the officials’ mistakes, the Longhorns' play is not blameless in the loss. Star receiver Daje Johnson had a rough game, catching just three passes for 15 yards, though he dropped more than he caught. The Longhorns were only 4 of 16 on third down. And of course, the botched punt at the end of the game led to Oklahoma State’s game-winning field goal.

It was the second time in as many weeks that special teams thwarted Texas’ attempt to take a game into overtime.

The Longhorns are 1-3 and two very big special teams mistakes away from possibly being 3-1. While Anderson admits his officials could have been better, the Longhorns could have been better, too. Texas is a young team that needs to learn how to finish games. And pointing fingers at officials is not going to make that lesson any easier to learn.

“You know, the amazing thing about this game, it is a game of life and you just gotta learn how, when you get knocked down, you gotta be able to pick yourself up,” Strong said. “And you look at two straight weekends, two straight Saturdays that you know we had it right there in our hands and let it slip away from us.

“We just have to play better and learn how to finish. We just can’t finish right now. Just gotta learn how to finish and just fight through it. You know, we’re sitting there with a three-point lead and I probably shouldn’t have gotten the call I got, but just got upset and gotta learn to just control my composure. We’ve just got to be able to bounce back, go back to work and get ready for TCU, knowing that’s going to be a big one.”

Steve Spurrier knows who rapper Lil Boosie is (Video)

Never doubt the knowledge of South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier – no matter what the topic may be.

South Carolina defensive end Quandeski Whitlow’s nickname is “Boosie,” based on the Louisiana-based rapper Lil Boosie. During his Tuesday press conference, Gamecocks quarterback Lorenzo Nunez said he didn’t think there was any chance Spurrier knew of the rapper, but the head ball coach is always full of surprises.

Whitlow, a 6-foot-3, 240-pound freshman, had four tackles and a sack in South Carolina’s win over UCF over the weekend.

If he keeps producing like that, maybe Spurrier will add a few Lil Boosie tracks to his workout playlist.

Idaho starts investigation into allegations of player mistreatment

The University of Idaho has started an investigation into the alleged actions of members of the football coaching staff after an anonymous email was sent out Monday.

The email, according to the Moscow-Pullman Daily News, was sent by someone identifying himself as "Joe Adams," a name that's not on Idaho's football team. Coach Paul Petrino's team is 1-3 in 2015. The only win is over FCS-level Wofford.

From the Daily News:

Among the many accusations were the claims Petrino and his staff frequently use demeaning language when addressing the players and conducted more two-a-day practices during fall camp than the NCAA permits, which the anonymous sender of the email says is the reason the team lost its Sept. 3 season opener against Ohio.

"Petrino and his staff are hurting the players rather than building them up," the email reads. "Also I believe if fall camp wasn't a month long we would have beaten Ohio. We played good during the first half and the second half our legs was gone due to days before we scrimmaged like usual live (tackling) at practice."

Idaho's football team released a statement Monday afternoon saying the email contained "significant libelous/slanderous material." Tuesday, the school said it was investigating the allegations in the email.

On September 28, 2015, the University of Idaho received an anonymous email alleging complaints about the behavior of certain members of the Vandal football coaching staff. The welfare of our students and student-athletes is our primary concern and as such, the university takes these allegations very seriously.

We have initiated an investigation into these allegations and fully expect the process to move forward quickly and efficiently. The university’s Internal Audit unit has referred the specific allegations to NCAA compliance (which reports to UI General Counsel) and to the department of Human Resources and will monitor the progress of the investigations by each area. Once the investigation has reached its conclusion, the university will take the appropriate action.

Captains for the team sent the Daily News a statement that said the players stood behind the coaching staff and didn't support any of the accusations. Petrino defended himself at his news conference Tuesday.

He also said he believed the letter wasn't written by anyone on the team.

This is also the second time Petrino has been accused of mistreatment in recent weeks. Petrino denied allegations by a reporter that he verbally accosted him during practice. The reporter, who had written a story about the kinks in Idaho's deep passing game, said Petrino screamed at him about the team's aerial attack and had to be held back by an assistant coach before practice was closed to the media. Petrino said in a statement that while he did react poorly, he did not threaten the reporter.

Idaho's athletic director said he witnessed the incident and that Petrino was never restrained.

Petrino, the brother of Louisville coach Bobby Petrino, is in the midst of his third season at Idaho. Through 27 games he's 3-24.
