Marshall DL Jarquez Samuel swan dives into end zone for TD (Video)

Scoring a touchdown is any lineman’s dream, so Marshall’s Jarquez Samuel made sure he got his money’s worth against Southern Mississippi on Friday night.

When Marshall's Gary Thompson came off the edge to sack Southern Miss quarterback Nick Mullens near the goal line, the ball popped into the air and right into the arms of Samuel. The 6-foot-4, 287-pound Samuel didn’t have far to go, so he executed a flawless swan dive into the end zone for a Thundering Herd touchdown.

That’s just the epitome of grace right there. Simply beautiful.

Samuel’s touchdown put the bow on a great defensive effort from the Thundering Herd, who went on to win 31-10 to improve to 5-1. Southern Miss dropped to 3-3 with the loss.

Laquan McGowan scores touchdown for Baylor vs. Kansas (Video)

Baylor's Laquan McGowan has his first touchdown of 2015. And it's as beautiful as we hoped.

The 410-pound tight end slipped out of the backfield unnoticed (how?) and put Baylor up 38-7 on Kansas in the second quarter.

Don't you feel sorry for the Kansas player that tried to tackle him as he rumbled into the end zone?

McGowan, who is also 6-7, had the first catch of his career against Michigan State in the 2015 Cotton Bowl. It was an 18-yard touchdown. His catch against Kansas was the second catch of his career. That's pretty good efficiency.

Baylor is absolutely toying with the Jayhawks so far. The Bears entered the game as a 45-point favorite. Maybe McGowan can get his second touchodwn of the game. At this point, it's really the only reason to watch the game any longer.

Western Kentucky recovers wacky accidental onside kick (Video)

Western Kentucky’s attempted squib kick had unexpected results.

Already up 49-14 over Middle Tennessee State late in the first half, the Hilltoppers hoped to avoid a long return by squibbing it to an upback. Instead, WKU’s Ryan Nuss kicked the ball directly off MTSU’s Derek Barnes and the Hilltoppers pounced on the live ball.

The fumble recovery allowed the Hilltoppers to add on to their lead via a Garrett Schwettman 31-yard field goal. The field goal gave WKU a commanding 52-14 lead at halftime.

The Hilltoppers look like a lock to improve to 5-1 on the season and 3-0 in Conference USA play.

Laquon Treadwell made this one-handed TD catch look easy (Video)

Yeah, Laquon Treadwell was wide open, but there's not much you can do to stop a catch like the one he made in the third quarter against New Mexico State on Saturday.

The Rebels were leading 38-3 when Treadwelll made this incredible one-handed catch. And not only did he make it look routine (and stayed inbounds), he scored his second touchdown of the day on it.

We're comfortable saying it is one of the best catches of the season. Here's another angle.

Treadwell, who came back in 2015 after suffering a gruesome season-ending leg injury against Auburn in 2014, has eight catches for 136 yards against the Aggies. The blowout is a nice bounceback game for Ole Miss, who suffered its first loss of 2015 against Florida in Week 5.

Texas rallies around embattled coach Charlie Strong, upsets Oklahoma 24-17

$
0
0

If there was any doubt whether Texas had the ability to rally around its embattled coach, Charlie Strong, those doubts were assuaged Saturday with the Longhorns’ performance against rival Oklahoma.

Texas defeated the Sooners 24-17 to claim their second win of the season and likely quiet the calls for Strong’s job for the next week and perhaps the rest of the year.

Following the final whistle, players hoisted Strong in the air as he crowd surfed to the cheers of the Longhorn faithful that still believed in the coach and the team even through a season a adversity.

The win was the biggest in coach Charlie Strong’s Texas tenure and a long time coming. The Longhorns had closes losses against Cal and Oklahoma State that were products of late-game special teams gaffes. But this game, a week after being blown out by TCU, finally showcased the talented team Strong had boasted about since the preseason.

“I’m just so proud of our players,” Strong said in the postgame interview. “Just how they came out and competed. All week had heard so much, they didn’t have any pride, and just they way they battled back And I know this, I’ve been saying it and I truly believe it, we have a good football team.”

And a lot of this victory belongs to the Texas defense.

It put a lot of pressure on an Oklahoma offense that had been averaging 42 points per game. The Sooners managed just 278 total yards and quarterback Baker Mayfield, who had been in Heisman contention, struggled to pass for 211 yards (most of which came in the second half) and a touchdown. Samaje Perine led all OU rushers with a paltry 10 carries for 36 yards.

Meanwhile, the Texas offense came alive and became the power rushing team it’s attempted to be all season. It rushed for 313 yards and a touchdown. The Longhorns punched the Oklahoma defensive line in the mouth early and kept punching all game.

Texas’ season is by no means saved, but this was the most important game on its schedule for a variety of reasons. The biggest of which is that gives the Longhorns — and Strong to an extent — a measure of confidence and pride. Strong showed Saturday that he could coach his team out of a deep, dark corner, now Strong’s overall success will be judged by whether he can keep it moving forward.

“They just came together,” Strong said in the postgame interview. “They heard so much and we just sat there and we talked about it and I said to them, you know, ‘At some point, we just gotta go guys, and we just gotta play up to our ability.’”

Georgia RB Nick Chubb injures left knee against Tennessee (Video)

Georgia running back Nick Chubb suffered what appeared to be a serious injury to his left leg on the first play from scrimmage Saturday against Tennessee.

Chubb first landed awkwardly on his left leg. Then he landed really awkwardly as he was spun around while tumbling toward the sidelines. Here's the video. Just a warning, it may make you squeamish.

He was looked at by Georgia's medical staff on the sidelines and helped off the field to a training table on the Georgia sideline. He was then taken to the locker room on a cart with an ice bag wrapped around his left knee. According to CBS sideline reporter Allie LaForce, Chubb collapsed on his way to the cart.

The sophomore running back entered the Tennessee game looking for his 14th-straight 100-yard rushing game. His 13th-straight game, a Georgia record, came in the Bulldogs' Week 5 loss to Alabama. After the game, a 38-31 loss after the Bulldogs jumped out to an early 24-3 lead., Georgia coach Mark Richt was thinking best-case about Chubb's injury.

Without Chubb, Georgia's offense takes a big hit. He emerged as the team's feature back as a freshman in 2014 when Todd Gurley was suspended. He then remained the focal point of Georgia's offense when Gurley injured his knee upon his return. Chubb had 1,547 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns in 2014.

With his two-yard carry against Tennessee, Chubb has 92 carries for 747 yards and seven touchdowns in 2015.

Maryland coach Randy Edsall angrily leaves press conference (Video)

It’s been a tough week for Maryland head coach Randy Edsall.

Several reports surfaced Thursday that he would be fired after Saturday’s game against Ohio State. And after the Terps fell 49-28 to the Buckeyes, Edsall was asked a question he did not appreciate during the post-game press conference and left the podium after a stern, emphatic answer.

Edsall was asked if it was “unusual” that he shook hands with every member of his team before the game. Edsall clearly (and understandably) took exception, and told the reporter that it’s something he does before every single game.

The loss to Ohio State dropped the Terps to 2-4 on the season heading into a bye week. It remains to be seen if Edsall will be on the sidelines for Maryland’s next game against Penn State on Oct. 24.

Oops: UCF returner accidentally kneels away 2 points against UConn (Video)

UCF gift-wrapped two points for Connecticut early in the first quarter at Bright House Networks Stadium.

After UConn took a 7-3 lead, UCF’s Hayden Jones fielded the ensuing kickoff about a yard deep in his own end zone. Initially, he looked up field to return the ball and took two full steps out of the end zone before retreating and taking a knee.

You can’t do that, Hayden!

Since Jones completely left the end zone, the boneheaded play was correctly ruled a safety by the officials, increasing UConn’s lead to 9-3.

It was all downhill from there for the Knights as the Huskies added two second quarter touchdowns to take a 23-3 halftime lead and went on to win 40-13. UCF dropped to 0-6 with the loss.

The Basement in Orlando is going to give out a lot more free beer.

Michigan makes statement in dominant 38-0 win over Northwestern

$

If you had any doubt that Michigan is a legitimate contender in the Big Ten, the Wolverines answered emphatically on Saturday afternoon.

In front of a huge crowd at Michigan Stadium, No. 18 Michigan dominated previously unbeaten No. 13 Northwestern 38-0 behind a stout defensive effort and a steady, balanced offense. The shutout was the third in a row for Jim Harbaugh’s Wolverines, who haven’t allowed a point since the fourth quarter of a 28-7 win over UNLV on Sept. 19.

This time around, the Wolverines limited Northwestern to only 168 yards of offense while limiting the Wildcats to just 2-of-13 on third down. Offensively, Michigan did not do anything spectacular, but the offensive line controlled the trenches all day, allowing Jake Rudock (17/23, 179 yards) to carefully and efficiently pick apart the Wildcats secondary while nine different ballcarriers put up 201 yards and three scores on the ground.

And you can’t forget about Michigan’s special teams, which started the game off with a spark – a 96-yard kickoff return for touchdown by Jehu Chesson on the opening kickoff.

The kickoff return set the tone for the afternoon, and by the end of the first quarter, Michigan already built a 21-0 lead on two short touchdown runs, one from Drake Johnson and another from Rudock. That was all the Wolverine defense would need. A pick-six from Jourdan Lewis extended the lead to 28-0 lead before halftime and the second half was no difference as the Wolverines coasted to a 38-0 win.

The win improves Michigan’s record to 5-1 on the season and gives the team a ton of momentum heading into another huge home matchup against in-state rivals Michigan State next Saturday.

Through six weeks, Harbaugh’s group looks like it could be the class of the Big Ten East. Top-ranked Ohio State and the fourth-ranked Spartans may be undefeated, but they haven’t exactly looked great in recent weeks. The Buckeyes have struggled in wins over the likes of Northern Illinois and Indiana while MSU survived a scare from Purdue. Michigan’s only loss came in Harbaugh’s debut on the road at No. 5 Utah.

On the other side, the loss is certainly a disappointing one for Northwestern, but the Wildcats, now 5-1, still have as good a chance as any in the mediocre Big Ten West. The Wildcats will get right back at it next week against Iowa, which beat Illinois on Saturday to improve to 6-0 and earn sole possession of first place in the West.

Tennessee comes back from 24-3 deficit to beat Georgia

$

Reggie Davis had the tying touchdown in his hands.

The Georgia wide receiver had already tied the game in the second half once. And with Georgia trailing 38-31 late in the fourth quarter, Davis broke free from his defender on a third down play. Georgia QB Greyson Lambert placed the ball perfectly in his arms. And it fell to the turf.

Tennessee ended up with its first SEC win of the season while Georgia suffered a second-straight conference defeat as the Volunteers won 38-31.

Georgia was forced to punt after Davis' drop. The Bulldogs got the ball back with under two minutes left and got in position for a shot at the end zone, but the pass fell incomplete.

To get the win, Tennessee needed a furious comeback. And a little help. The Vols took the lead for the final time when QB Josh Dobbs scored from five yards out on first and goal with 5:48 left in the game.

The help came in the first half. OK, the drop helped too. Until Saturday, Tennessee has been the team giving its opponents help. The Vols blew double-digit fourth quarter leads against both Oklahoma and Florida and did not play well in a home loss to Arkansas. Against Georgia, Tennessee was the one making the comeback as Georgia gifted Tennessee 14 straight points in less than two minutes before the end of the first half.

The second touchdown came after the Bulldogs fumbled a kickoff. Dobbs found Kamara for a 2-yard score to make the halftime lead 24-17 instead of the 24-3 that was on the scoreboard a few minutes earlier.

Georgia missed Nick Chubb, its star running back who was hurt on the first play of scrimmage. Chubb suffered a nasty-looking left knee injury on a two-yard carry and missed the end of the game. But it wasn't like the running game disappeared without the sophomore. RB Sony Michel ran for 145 yards in his absence.

The Georgia defense couldn't use Chubb as an excuse, either. Tennessee piled up over 500 yards of total offense, including over 300 yards passing by Dobbs. It was just the second 300-yard passing game of his career. The first came in an overtime win against South Carolina in 2014.

The win is Tennessee's first win against Georgia since 2009. The coach of that Tennessee team? Lane Kiffin.

The outcome, coupled with Chubb's injury, makes things mighty interesting in the SEC East. Georgia now has two losses, and if Florida beats Missouri, the Gators will have what's essentially two-game lead on everyone else in the conference.

The Bulldogs started the season with College Football Playoff hopes. Now, if Chubb is seriously hurt, the season may come down to fighting for a decent bowl berth. Yes, it's setting up to be another disappointing year in Athens while Tennessee fans are hoping that this was the moment that pushes the Volunteers towards the top of the division.

Leonard Fournette to auction jersey for flood relief efforts in South Carolina (Update)

$

LSU running back Leonard Fournette had another big day against South Carolina on Saturday, but an announcement he made after the game was arguably more impressive.

After racking up 158 yards and a touchdown in a 45-24 win over South Carolina, Fournette said in a postgame interview that he wants to auction off his game jersey to raise money for those affected by significant flooding in South Carolina.

That flooding forced Saturday’s game to move from its scheduled site at Williams-Brice Stadium in South Carolina to Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge. And after it initially looked like it would be a violation for Fournette to auction the jersey, the NCAA announced on Twitter it would allow him to do so.

Fournette's family was impacted by Hurricane Katrina, so you can tell it means a lot to him to help out the folks in South Carolina.

Fournette passed the 1,000-yard mark on an 87-yard touchdown run to open the third quarter. In doing so, Fournette tied an NCAA record by reaching that milestone in just his team’s fifth game of the season.

Fournette’s 1,022 yards in five games is eighth-best in FBS history.

Miami accidentally tweets out '#BeatMiami' ahead of Florida State game

$

As Miami prepared for tonight’s clash against rival Florida State, it sent out a tweet trying to hype up its fans.

Unfortunately, it turned into a pretty epic fail.

Miami accidentally tweeted out a BeatMiami hashtag (@AllKindsWeather)

Instead of hashtagging the post “#BeatFSU” the unfortunate social media worker at Miami used the hashtag “#BeatMiami.”

An innocent mistake to be sure, but we all know as soon as something appears on the Internet it’s there forever. Still, Miami tried to pluck its blunder from Twitter before anyone saw it, but it was too late. One enterprising Twitter feed, @AllKindsWeather, grabbed the screenshot and now Miami has been shamed.

Miami can only hope that the Twitter gaffe doesn’t actually come to fruition. If Miami does win, perhaps this gaffe can be looked at as a reverse jinx or something.

North Texas fires Dan McCarney after loss to Portland State

North Texas fired coach Dan McCarney in the hours after the team's 66-7 loss to FCS-level Portland State.

North Texas (0-5) was down 45-0 at halftime.

"This is a really a tough decision, but after a complete evaluation of the University of North Texas football program, we have decided to make a change at head coach," North Texas athletic director Rick Villarreal said in a statement. "I will always cherish my relationship with coach McCarney and he's done nothing but great things for us in his time here, but we felt like this was the best thing we needed to do for the program moving forward."

It's of little consolation, but Portland State beat Washington State in Week 1. The Vikings piled up 670 yards of offense agains North Texas, including 368 yards rushing. The Vikings' 302 pass yards came on just 13 completions while North Texas was 16-of-41 passing and averaged less than 3 yards per carry rushing.

"The people here at North Texas are great, we couldn't have been embraced or supported any better during my time here," McCarney said in a statement. "Obviously we have been really struggling lately, and Rick felt it was in his best interests with the University and the athletic department and the football program to go another direction. I will always be grateful to President Rawlins, Rick and President Smatresk for this opportunity."

McCarney, 62, was in his fifth season at the school. The Mean Green went 9-4 in McCarney's third year in 2013 (and the team's first year in Conference USA) but regressed to 4-8 in 2014. McCarney leaves the school with a record of 22-32.

North Texas was his first coaching job since he parted ways with Iowa State following the 2006 season. His Iowa State teams went 7-5 and 4-4 in the Big 12 in 2004 and 2005 before falling to 4-8 in 2006.

Dabo Swinney is angry at people who use the word 'Clemsoning' (Video)

$

0

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney is tired of the term “Clemsoning” and he had no trouble expressing his frustration about the word following Saturday’s 43-24 win against Georgia Tech.

According to the Urban Dictionary, “Clemsoning” is defined as: “The act of delivering an inexplicably disappointing performance, usually within the context of a college football season.”

“I’m sick of it. I don’t know why people even bring up the daggum word,” Swinney said. “How about some of these other teams out there that lose to unranked opponents all the time?

“We ain’t lost to anybody unranked since 2011, but I have to come to a press conference in 2015 and get asked that. And that’s all media bullcrap. I can tell you how [the players] feel about it, they don’t like it. It’s a lack of respect. It’s not doing your homework and attention to what reality is.”

The term became popular early in Swinney’s tenure when Clemson would lose to opponents it should have beaten or would blow winnable opportunities against ranked teams.

As Swinney points out, the term is a bit old now, but it still hasn’t stopped the phrase from surfacing most recently against Louisville in mid-September where the Tigers had to sweat out a late win against the Cardinals.

Swinney rails against the term for three minutes before calling for the next question. And really, he’s kinda didn't have to say anything. He has the last laugh right now as the Tigers are undefeated and 2-0 in conference play.

TCU completes comeback, beats Kansas State 52-45

$

TCU is still undefeated.

The Horned Frogs survived a scare from Kansas State on the road Saturday night and won 52-45 after Trevone Boykin hit Josh Doctson on a 55-yard touchdown pass with just over a minute left.

Kansas State had one more chance to tie the game but quarterback Joe Hubener was sacked and fumbled. TCU recovered and ran out the clock.

The Horned Frogs couldn't stop Kansas State in the first half. The Wildcats jumped out to a 35-17 lead in the first half and it figured that KSU would be deliberate and continue to control the clock with the run game in the second half. And you couldn't have been blamed for thinking that Saturday would be the night the depleted TCU defense would meet its match and the Horned Frogs would fall from the ranks of the unbeaten.

Kansas State didn't stick with the running game. And TCU's comeback was sparked by Kansas State's passing game. The Horned Frogs got to within 11 after a pick-six of Hubener to begin the second half and were down 42-31 before taking the lead for the first time since being up 17-14.

The lead was all Trevone Boykin too. If Leonard Fournette is the favorite for the Heisman Trophy for the first six weeks, Boykin needs to be on the stage in New York with him.

He closed the gap to within four with a nifty 14-yard touchdown run to the left side. And TCU got a 45-42 lead when Boykin scored on a 69-yard run on a fantastic keeper that faked out the KSU defense.

As TCU was closing the gap, Kansas State kept passing. It didn't work. Hubener, who became the first Wildcat since Collin Klein in 2012 to have four rushing touchdowns, was 13-33 passing for 157 yards and an interception. The aerial attack seemed the far inferior option to a ground game that averaged nearly five yards a carry. Hubener himself finished with 111 yards rushing on 26 carries.

Yet Kansas State stuck with the pass game. And TCU completed the comeback with the touchdown strike. Boykin finished with 301 yards passing and 124 yards rushing. Doctson had eight catches for 155 yards and two touchdowns.

TCU kept pace with both Baylor and Oklahoma State with the win. The Bears throttled Kansas 66-7 and Oklahoma State moved to 3-0 in the Big 12 with an overtime win over West Virginia.

Rutgers spikes ball on fourth down, loses to Michigan State (Video)

Saturday night’s Michigan State-Rutgers game ended on a huge mixup for the Scarlet Knights.

After the fourth-ranked Spartans took a 31-24 lead with 43 seconds to play, Rutgers regained possession without any timeouts. The Scarlet Knights moved into Michigan State territory, but quarterback Chris Laviano was sacked by MSU’s Shilique Calhoun on a third down play.

With the clock ticking down inside 10 seconds, Laviano looked to stop the clock with a spike. There was one problem, however: it was fourth down! Laviano, unaware of the situation, spiked it anyway, resulting in a turnover on downs to end the game.

Laviano got the snap off with a few seconds remaining and had the time to set up a Hail Mary from midfield. That would have at least given the Scarlet Knights a chance to tie the game.

But alas, it went the other way, leaving interim head coach Norries Wilson completely exasperated.

When addressing reporters after the game, Wilson shouldered the blame for the gaffe.

"At the end of the game, the clock management is 100 percent on the guy in charge and I'm the guy in charge," Wilson said. "So I mismanaged the situation. Chris Laviano did what he was told to do and I told him the wrong thing. So don't think that he screwed it up."

Laviano admitted that the coaches told him to spike the ball.

The loss dropped Rutgers to 2-3 on the season heading into next weekend’s road matchup at Indiana when head coach Kyle Flood will return from his three-game suspension.

On the other side, Michigan State improved to 6-0 with the win. Next on the schedule for the Spartans is a highly anticipated matchup with in-state rival Michigan (5-1) in Ann Arbor.

Utah holds on to beat California 30-24, remains unbeaten

$
0
0

In every great season, there’s always one game through which a team has to persevere.

Saturday’s 30-24 win against California was Utah’s game.

California had an opportunity to win the contest late despite five interceptions by star quarterback Jared Goff, but Goff’s fourth-down pass was knocked away by Boobie Hobbs to leave Utah with a few kneel downs to stay undefeated.

“I’ll tell you what, six takeaways by our defense, that was the key,” Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said. “Great play and coverage back on that last play by Boobie Hobbs. That quarterback is maybe the best in the country at what he does as far as staying in the pocket and our defense rose to the occasion.”

Goff’s five interceptions were the most by a California quarterback since 1998 against Arizona State. He had four in the first half.

Still, the California defense played as well as it had all year and kept the Bears in the game.

Utah had a lot of success with running back Devontae Booker in the first half — he had more than 200 yards of total offense in the opening 30 minutes — but California limited those avenues in the second half. And quarterback Travis Wilson also found little success on the ground and in the air against a California defense that forced three turnovers of its own.

Booker ended up being the offensive key to the Utes victory with 34 carries for 222 yards and two touchdowns. He also added four catches for 45 yards.

Both of these teams came into the contest looking to extend unexpected unbeaten streaks. California was off to its first 5-0 start since 1991 and Utah had never been this successful as a member of a Power 5 conference. The Utes did start the season 8-0 in 2010 before losing three of their final five.

Utah already had ascended to No. 5 in AP Poll and No. 7 in the Coaches Poll and could see those positions increase after other teams struggled against lesser competition. However, Utah’s road to the Pac-12 South title and the College Football Playoff doesn’t get any easier from here.

It has to a face a newly energized Arizona State team next week and then USC the weekend after.

California’s loss might stop its winning streak, but it’s still in a heated competition with Stanford for the top of the Pac-12 North. The two teams won’t meet until Nov. 21.

If there’s a positive for Cal, it’s that it turned the ball over six times and was still in a position to beat a Top 5 opponent. That might be of little consolation now, but it should ultimately help the Bears moving forward.

As for Utah, close wins are almost better than blowouts like the one the Utes had against Oregon two weeks ago. It shows the mettle of a team, especially one that has a tough road to finish off what has already been a terrific season.

Winners and Losers: The unlikely crop of undefeateds are a refreshing change

$

Dr. Saturday winners and losers

Six weeks into the college football season, there are 12 undefeated teams remaining and at least five of those teams weren’t supposed to be here.

Teams such as Oklahoma State, Iowa, Florida, Texas A&M and Utah were not in the preseason rankings, but have made significant impacts not only on their respective divisional and conference races, but also could be highly ranked when the College Football Playoff rankings are released at the beginning of November.

This is one of the fun parts about college football.

It’s easy to label past favorites the favorites again, but when a team rises up out of nowhere and commands attention, it makes the season more interesting for everyone.

Look at Iowa. It hasn’t started a season 6-0 since going 11-2 in 2009. And really, every year since that campaign, Iowa fans have been calling for coach Kirk Ferentz’s job. Now his Hawkeyes lead the Big Ten West and are challenging powers Ohio State and Michigan State for the top of the conference.

Oklahoma State last started the season 6-0 in 2011 when it appeared poised for a national championship run, but was knocked out of contention by a late-season loss to Iowa State. It finished that year 12-1.

Texas A&M hasn’t started a season 5-0 since 1994 when its only blemish was a 21-21 tie with SMU. It’s had good seasons since, but never such a strong start. And with Alabama, Ole Miss and Auburn trailing in the divisional picture, A&M and undefeated LSU could be duking it out to play in the SEC title game against Florida, a team that hasn’t started 6-0 since 2012.

And of course, the Pac-12 has been one of the most interesting developments with Utah and Cal entering the night as the two most unexpected undefeateds in the conference. Utah is no stranger to undefeated seasons, but this is its first undefeated campaign as a member of a Power Five conference. There are many more pitfalls ahead for the Utes, but as of now, it’s sitting in the top five of the Associated Press Poll and has the most Cinderella feel of any of the aforementioned programs.

While there’s still more than half the season to go, it’s clear there’s a tectonic shift in the teams to watch this year. Sure, the traditional college football powers are still the traditional powers and many of them are still alive in their respective conference races, but it’s fun to watch some new teams get involved.

Hopefully, we’re still talking about them in Week 12.

Here's are the rest of the winners and losers from Week 6:

WINNERS

Texas Tech offense: Maybe the Red Raiders can really have some fun now that the two toughest games of the season are out of the way. After consecutive losses to TCU and Baylor, the Red Raiders piled up a school-record 776 yards of offense in a 66-31 win over Iowa State. Yes, that's more yards of offense than any Mike Leach-coached team. QB Patrick Mahomes threw for 482 yards and five touchdowns as six of Tech's touchdowns were plays of over 30 yards. The Tech defense is going to give up a bunch of points over the rest of the season, but the offense is going to make the Red Raiders a must-watch every Saturday.

Iowa State RB Mike Warren: While Iowa State's defense was getting torched, Warren was running wild once again. The Cyclones' redshirt freshman running back had 23 carries for 245 yards on Saturday and has 564 rushing yards on the season. After having nine attempts for 28 yards in Iowa State's first two games, Warren has increased his per-game rushing total from 126 to 175 and now 245 in the past three games.

Iowa RB Jordan Canzeri: While Warren had a heck of a day, so did Iowa running back Jordan Canzeri. The Hawkeyes moved to 6-0 with a 29-20 win over Illinois. Canzeri had a school-record 43 carries for 256 yards and a touchdown. In Week 5 against Wisconsin, he set a then-career high with 26 carries in the Hawkeyes' win. He obliterated that number on Saturday. It was the fourth game he's had more than 20 carries in 2015; he never had a game with 20 or more in his career before the season.

Florida: Welcome to a commanding position atop the SEC East, Florida. The Gators dominated Missouri 21-3 on Saturday night to give themselves a two-game lead over everyone else in the division. OK, so Florida has a one-game lead over Kentucky. But the Gators have the tiebreaker over Kentucky, so it's essentially a two-game lead. Florida's defense stifled Missouri freshman quarterback Drew Lock and the offense worked well enough, at least in the first half, to win. Florida's recipe for success is going to be just enough offense and a really good defense. But with such a margin in the East, those seem like the makings of an appearance in Atlanta at the SEC Championship Game.

Washington State: The Cougars overcame a 31-21 fourth quarter deficit to shock Oregon at home in double-overtime -- the first win for Washington State in Eugene since 2003. Luke Falk threw for 505 yards and sent the game to overtime when he hit Dom Williams for an eight-yard score with one second to play in regulation. After the teams traded touchdowns in the first overtime period, the Wazzu defense sealed the win when Shalon Luani intercepted Jeff Lockie in the end zone. The Cougars improved to 3-2 with the win while Oregon dropped to 3-3.

Oh, and Washington State won Twitter, too.

BONUS WINNER - Tennessee security guard: Tennessee fans stormed the field when the Vols upset Georgia, but that wasn't going to deter this Neyland Stadium security guard from doing his job. Look at this form tackle!

LOSERS

Nebraska: This tweet says it all.

Fans of former Big 12 rivals who felt the Huskers got a lot of calls and good luck throughout their time in the conference, enjoy this. Because Nebraska has put itself in a position to be two or three games better than it is.

The late field goal in the 23-21 loss to Wisconsin pushed the Huskers' record to 2-4. Nebraska has had late leads in all four of those games. If the luck continues, bowl eligibility could now be a real concern. Iowa, Northwestern and Michigan State still loom on the schedule. The Huskers have only missed a bowl twice (2004, 2007) since 1969. 2015 could be the third year. And there's a chance Nebraska could win less than five games for the first time since 1961. How crazy is that?

USC's offense: USC’s offense was hampered by an uninspired offensive performance in a 17-12 loss to Washington. The Trojans came into the game as the leading offensive team in the Pac-12 with 46.75 points per game and Washington had not been great defensively in its previous games. In fact, its best defensive performance came when it limited Boise State to 16 points in the season opener (a loss). USC was coming off a bye week and before that had dismantled Arizona State 42-14. It should have been rested and had momentum heading into the contest and instead it was totally flat. That falls on coaching.

Oklahoma's title chances: Rivalry games can be tricky. And they can be especially tricky when the rival, in this case Texas, is coming off a 50-7 dismantling at the hands of TCU.

It was easy to watch the gamefilm and take the Longhorns lightly and that’s what it looked like Oklahoma did in its 24-17 loss to the Longhorns. It was only the second loss to the Longhorns in the past six meetings, but this one put the Sooners a game back of Oklahoma State, TCU and Baylor, who all remain undefeated, and likely took quarterback Baker Mayfield out of the Heisman race.

Boston College: Boston College’s defense is very good. Its offense? Not so much. The Eagles were shut out 3-0 at home by Wake Forest on Saturday. BC had multiple chances to take the lead in the final two minutes, but failed spectacularly. First quarterback Troy Flutie fumbled at the Wake 4-yard line with just over a minute to play. After Wake gave it back with a fumble of its own, BC had the ball at the one-yard line with 18 seconds to play. BC had no timeouts, but called a running play. It failed.

In the ensuing scrum, Boston College was not able to get a play off as time expired, allowing Wake Forest to pull out an improbable win. The Eagles, who had four turnovers on the afternoon, dropped to 3-3 (0-3 ACC) with the loss.

UCF (again): UCF coach George O’Leary played along with the “rivalry” talk prior to Saturday’s contest against UConn by saying that he didn’t have a trophy with a clock on it.

And now he still doesn’t.

The whole world may have made fun of the “Civil ConFLiCT” trophy coming into the game, but O’Leary wouldn’t have had a problem keeping it in South Florida. Instead, the new trophy and its digital clock got back on the plane to Connecticut and UCF was saddled with its sixth consecutive loss. UCF hasn’t started a season winless since going 0-11 in 2004.

Three days after multiple reports emerged that Edsall would be let go after Saturday’s game against Ohio State, the university confirmed the news on Sunday afternoon.

“We appreciate Randy’s tireless commitment to the University of Maryland,” athletic director Kevin Anderson said in a statement. “This was a difficult decision, but ultimately this is the best course of action for our football program moving forward.”

The Terps dropped Saturday’s game at Ohio State 49-28 to fall to 2-4 on the season and Edsall stormed out of the postgame press conference after taking exception to a question from a reporter. It was the team’s third consecutive loss, following blowouts at the hands of West Virginia and Michigan. Maryland also suffered an embarrassing 48-27 home loss to Bowling Green in Week 2.

Edsall, who was in his fifth season at Maryland, finishes with a 22-34 overall record, including 10-24 in conference play. Before landing at Maryland, Edsall spent 12 seasons as the head coach at Connecticut.

With Edsall’s dismissal, Anderson announced that offensive coordinator Mike Locksley will take over as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

“Having spent more than a decade with the Maryland football program over the course of his career, I feel Mike is best suited to effectively guide our program through the remainder of the 2015 season,” Anderson said. “Mike has previous head coaching experience and is well-respected both locally and nationally.”

The school also announced that assistant head coach/outside linebackers coach Lyndon Johnson has been “relieved of his coaching duties.” Johnson had been with the program since 2011.

Maryland has a bye this week before resuming play at home against Penn State on Oct. 24.
