Tight end LaQuan McGowan #80 of the Baylor BearsThere's a new top Big 12 team in the AP poll.

Baylor jumped TCU for the No. 2 spot behind Ohio State in the Week 6 poll. The Bears were No. 3 last week and demolished Kansas 66-7 on Saturday. TCU had to come back from a 35-17 deficit to beat Kansas State on the road 52-45.

The biggest loser among top 10 teams that won was Michigan State. The Spartans escaped against Rutgers 31-24 and fell to No. 7 in advance of their clash against Michigan in Week 7. The Wolverines, who throttled Northwestern, moved up six spots to No. 12.

Ohio State also made history in this week's poll. The Buckeyes have now spent the most time at the top of the AP poll, breaking a tie with Oklahoma.

Oklahoma moved into the top 10 in Week 5 and is now No. 19 after losing to Texas. Florida took Oklahoma's spot in the top 10 at No. 8. The SEC has the most teams in the top 10 with four, but the teams are all in the bottom half of the top 10.

Here's how this week's poll shakes out.

1. Ohio State (27 first place votes) [LW: 1]
2. Baylor (13) [3]
3. TCU (3) [2]
4. Utah (16) [5]
5. Clemson (1) [6]

Athlon Sports' most interesting stats from Week 6

$

0

Numbers and statistics are a huge part of college football. Every Sunday, reading updated box scores and stats is like Christmas for fans and media members. Some stats like total offense and total defense are overrated, but each help paint a picture for a team or particular game.

Whether the stats are historic, advanced or just an observation from a box score, Athlon Sports brings the most intriguing, important, historic and bizarre stats from around the weekend of college football action:

100-0: Before Week 6, Oregon’s Record With a 10-Point Lead Since 2005

Oregon’s struggles in the post-Marcus Mariota era continued in Week 6, as the Ducks lost 45-38 in double overtime to Washington State. The defeat against the Cougars was already Oregon’s third loss of the year, which is the most for this program since the 2009 season. Additionally, this was the program’s first loss when leading by 10 or more points in its last 100 games. That’s only part of the bad news for the Ducks. With six games left – including road trips to Arizona State and Stanford – Oregon is in real danger of missing out on a bowl in 2015.

6: Consecutive Wins by Florida State Over Miami

It wasn’t easy, but Florida State continued its recent dominance over in-state rival Miami on Saturday night with a 29-24 win in Tallahassee. The victory marked the Seminoles’ sixth consecutive victory over the Hurricanes. Florida State has won nine out of the last 11 in this series and has claimed four out of the last five against Florida.

21: Deficit Faced by Tennessee in First Half of Win Over Georgia

Tennessee’s troubles in the second half of games have been well documented this season. But on Saturday, the Volunteers reversed that trend, overcoming a 21-point deficit late in the first half to trail the Bulldogs 24-17 at halftime and eventually win 38-31. After losing its first three games to Power 5 opponents this year, Tennessee desperately needed a good showing on Saturday. The 21-point rally was the third-largest comeback in program history.

71: Rushing Yards Allowed by Clemson Against Georgia Tech

Clemson’s defense returned only two starters and faced a significant rebuilding effort this preseason. However, the Tigers haven’t missed a beat in 2015. In Saturday’s 43-24 win over Georgia Tech, Clemson held the Yellow Jackets’ option attack to just 71 rushing yards on 42 attempts. The 1.69 yards per carry mark was the lowest by Georgia Tech since 2008 when it managed only 79 yards on 47 attempts against Gardner-Webb. Through five games, the Tigers are holding opponents to 16.6 points a contest and 4.5 yards per play. Coordinator Brent Venables is one of the nation’s top assistant coaches and has quickly reshaped Clemson’s defense into one of the best in the ACC once again.

5: Interceptions by California QB Jared Goff Against Utah

California’s Jared Goff has been one of the nation’s top quarterbacks through the first six games of 2015, but the junior had his hands full against Utah’s defense on Saturday night. Goff tossed a career-high five picks in the 30-24 loss and finished with 340 passing yards on 25 completions. Prior to Saturday night’s game, Goff never tossed more than three interceptions in a single contest and threw nearly as many picks (five) as he had all of 2014 (seven).

Related: Maryland Coach Randy Edsall Goes Off on Media After Loss to Ohio State

313: Rushing Yards by Texas in Win Over Oklahoma

Second-year coach Charlie Strong picked up a huge 24-17 victory over Oklahoma on Saturday. After a 1-4 start, the Longhorns needed positive momentum in order to make a run at a bowl game. Mission accomplished. The 2015 Red River Rivalry was largely decided by the play on the trenches. The Longhorns rushed for 313 yards against the Sooners, which was the program’s highest mark under Strong and the most since Aug. 31, 2013.

4: Losses by USC coach Steve Sarkisian to Double-Digit Underdogs

Thursday night’s loss to Washington was another disappointing defeat for USC under second-year coach Steve Sarkisian. The Trojans are 12-6 under Sarkisian’s watch and 1-2 in Pac-12 games so far this season. For a team picked by some to make the College Football Playoff, a 3-2 record after five games ranks among the nation’s biggest disappointments. Additionally, there’s a concerning trend developing for Sarkisian. Of his six losses with USC, four of those occurred when the Trojans were a double-digit favorite.

97-0: Combined Scores of Michigan’s Last Three Games

The Wolverines recorded their third consecutive shutout on Saturday with a 38-0 victory over Northwestern. Michigan’s defense was dominant all over the box score once again, limiting the Wildcats to 2.9 yards per play and just 2 of 13 on third-down attempts. The Wolverines have not allowed a point in their last three games and have surrendered only 14 over their last five matchups. Michigan’s defense ranks first nationally by limiting opponents to just 6.3 points per game.

59: Portland State’s Margin of Victory Over North Texas

A FCS team beating a FBS team occasionally happens early in the season, but Saturday’s win by Portland State over North Texas was especially noteworthy. The Vikings’ 59-point margin of victory is the biggest by a FCS team over a FBS program. The 59-point loss by the Mean Green cost coach Dan McCarney his job shortly after the game ended.

12: Combined Points Allowed by Boston College in Last Games – Both Losses

Wake Forest’s 3-0 victory over Boston College on Saturday produced plenty of interesting tidbits from the box score and crazy last-minute highlights. The Eagles and Demon Deacons traded fumbles in the final minute, with Boston College unable to get a play off before the clock hit zero on the Wake Forest one-yard line. Not only was the ending bizarre, these two teams combined for just 412 yards on 127 plays, 23 first downs and 18 punts. The Eagles have one of the ACC’s top defenses and have allowed only 12 points in their last two games – both defeats. With injuries sidelining quarterback Darius Wade and running back Jon Hilliman, Boston College is averaging only 2.3 points per game through three ACC contests in 2015.

(AP Photo/Charlie Neibergall)Iowa improved to 6-0 with a 29-20 win over Illinois on Saturday, but it also took a big hit to its defense.

According to Marc Morehouse of the Cedar Rapids Gazette, Hawkeyes defensive end Drew Ott suffered a torn ACL in the win. Ott, a senior, has been one of the best pass-rushers in the Big Ten over the past few seasons. He is expected to miss the rest of the season.

Ott registered his fifth sack of the season on Saturday, to go along with 7.5 tackles for loss and three forced fumbles this season.

Ott’s best season came in 2014 when he totaled 57 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and eight sacks to earn second-team All-Big Ten honors. He also had 50 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks as a sophomore in 2013 and three tackles in limited action in five games as a true freshman in 2012.

Redshirt freshman Parker Hesse is a likely candidate to move into the starting lineup with Ott out. He has 15 tackles and a sack so far this season.

Next on the schedule for the Hawkeyes is an important road game at Northwestern, which dropped to 5-1 Saturday with a blowout loss at Michigan.

Suspended Missouri QB Maty Mauk favorites tweets about QB situation

$

0

Suspended Missouri quarterback Maty Mauk was apparently looking at tweets posted during Missouri's 21-3 loss to Florida on Saturday night.

Mauk's account favorited two tweets that were pointing fun at Mizzou fans who wanted Mauk replaced with backup quarterback Drew Lock and another that was praising Lock early in the game.

Lock, a true freshman, struggled mightily against Florida's defense. Missouri was 1-14 on third down and Lock was 16-39 for 151 yards and two interceptions.

Mauk was suspended indefinitely before Missouri's Week 5 game against South Carolina for unspecified reasons. Mizzou's offense got boos in a 9-6 Week 3 win over UConn at home and after the game Mauk said this about the boos.

“It’s whatever, honestly,” he said. “If that’s how they feel, that’s how they feel. I’m not going to worry about them. That’s why they’re up in the stands and I’m down on the field."

Lock, who had been getting various series in Missouri's first four games, became the starting quarterback and was efficient, if not basic, in Missouri's win over the Gamecocks.

Mauk, a junior, was Missouri's quarterback in 2014 and was in a similar situation to Lock in 2013. He replaced QB James Franklin after Franklin was injured and when Franklin returned (and didn't play exceptionally well), fans clamored for Mauk to see more playing time.

Before he was suspended, Mauk was 57-110 passing for 654 yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions. He was 221-414 passing for 2,648 yards, 25 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 2014.

USC coach Steve Sarkisian to take a leave of absence, seek treatment

USC coach Steve Sarkisian was asked to take a leave of absence from the program, athletic director Pat Haden announced Sunday afternoon.

Clay Helton will serve as USC's interim coach moving forward.

Sarkisian was inexplicably absent at the Trojans practice on Sunday, which prompted whispers about his whereabouts and a call to Haden.

“This all kind of happened very quickly,” Haden said in a brief meeting with press. “I was over at basketball and got a call that coach Sarkisian wasn’t at practice. So, I just learned about this about 1 o’clock. I called Steve, talked to him. It was very clear to me that he is not healthy. I asked him to take an indefinite leave of absence.”

Haden did not elaborate on what the term "not healthy" meant. However, a player told ESPN's Shelley Smith via text that Sarkisian "showed up lit to meetings again today."

Haden, senior associate AD Steve Lopes and Helton met with the team shortly after practice to explain Sarkisian’s absence and the steps moving forward.

In August, Sarkisian was drunk and used inappropriate language at a USC booster function. He apologized for the incident and said he mixed alcohol and medication.

At the time of the incident, Haden said he met with Sarkisian and told him his actions were inappropriate, disappointing and would not be tolerated in the future. Haden did not suspend Sarkisian. Sarkisian did say he was going to get treatment for his alcohol and drug use.

Washington upset USC 17-12 on Thursday, which prompted calls for Sarkisian's job.

We’ll have more details on the situation as they become available.

Georgia RB Nick Chubb has 'significant' knee injury (Update)

Update: 10/11 5:40 p.m. ET

Georgia announced that RB Nick Chubb suffered a "significant" injury to his left knee during Saturday's game against Tennessee. The school said in a release that the injury "involves damage to multiple ligaments and cartilage" but "the damage does not include the ACL" or "arteries or nerves."

UGA Senior Associate Athletic Director for Medicine Ron Courson said that Chubb is expected to have surgery to repair the injured knee "sometime in the next two weeks."

- - - Original post - - -

Nick Chubb tore three ligaments in his left knee, according to a Facebook post by his mother, LaVelle Chubb.

"Nick has a PCL tear along with two other ligaments," LaVelle Chubb wrote. "It's not nearly as bad as it could have been. They'll wait for swelling to go down to decide when to have surgery. Possibly two weeks."

Coach Mark Richt is expected to meet with the media and provide an update Sunday afternoon.

Chubb suffered the injury during the first play of Saturday’s 38-31 loss to Tennessee when he landed awkwardly after being flung out of bounds.

Following the game, Richt said he was optimistic that Chubb wouldn’t need surgery.

If Chubb’s season is over, he finishes with 92 carries for 747 yards and seven touchdowns. He also matched Herschel Walker’s record for consecutive 100-yard games last week against Alabama.

Chubb’s mother went on to thank people in the Facebook post for their well wishes and said the family will continue to pray for a speedy recovery.

"I do not doubt God or his plans," she wrote. "As a matter of fact, I know I'm on the right track. We are going to increase our time with God and continue watching him work."

Top recruit Daelin Hayes decommits from USC, new allegations against Sarkisian surface

$

Linebacker Daelin Hayes, a five-star recruit, has pulled his commitment to USC in light of coach Steve Sarkisian’s leave of absence for reported substance abuse.

Hayes is the No. 1 ranked player in the state of Michigan, the No. 3 player at his position and the No. 13 player overall.

He was scheduled to wear No. 55 next year, the number famed USC linebacker Junior Seau wore for the Trojans.

Sunday afternoon, Sarkisian was placed on leave of absence after reportedly showing up to a special teams meeting intoxicated. He did not come out to practice. Athletic director Pat Haden was notified and Sarkisian is reportedly seeking treatment for substance abuse.

In the hours since the initial news of Sarkisian’s leave of absence was reported, several more allegations of him being drunk in front of the team, including once on a team plane and most recently during the win against Arizona State, have surfaced.

Haden briefly addressed the situation Sunday afternoon, but said he had only been made aware of it about an hour before he met with media and didn’t have much to offer.

It is unclear Sarkisian’s future with the team, but if allegations that he was drunk on a team flight and during a game are true then he will surely lose his job. As it stands, assistant Clay Helton will serve as interim head coach until further notice.

Only a few hours after announcing that head coach Steve Sarkisian will take an “indefinite leave of absence,” the program announced that center Max Tuerk is out for the season with a knee injury. Tuerk was injured during the Trojans’ home loss to Washington on Thursday night.

The loss is a significant one for USC. Tuerk has been a key cog on the Trojans’ offensive line since emerging as a starter at left tackle down the stretch in his true freshman campaign in 2012.

Since then, he has been a starter at various positions on the line. He started 13 games at left guard and once at right tackle as a sophomore in 2013 before moving over to center full-time in 2014, when he earned first-team All-Pac 12 honors.

After Tuerk was injured against Washington, sophomore Toa Lobendahn moved over from left guard to center.

Additionally, USC announced that defensive end Claude Pelon is doubtful for Saturday’s game at No. 14 Notre Dame due to a knee injury while wideout Steven Mitchell is questionable with an ankle injury.

Cornerback Iman Marshall (abdomen) participated in Sunday’s practice and is expected to play against Notre Dame.

USC, now 3-2 on the season, dropped out of the AP Poll.

WSU assistant pleads for Mike Leach to go for winning 2-point conversion (Video)

When Washington State scored in the final seconds of regulation against Oregon on Saturday, Cougars head coach Mike Leach had a decision to make: kick the game-tying extra point, or attempt a game-winning two-point conversion?

One assistant had his mind made up and emphatically told Leach to go for two.

Leach carefully considered his options.

So what did Leach decide? Well, first he had to gaze into the distance for a few seconds and ponder the meaning of life.

After those dramatic few seconds, Leach sent the extra point team out and sent the game to overtime with the score tied 31-31.

The move paid off, too, as the Cougars won 45-38 in double overtime to snap an eight-game losing streak against Oregon.

Arkansas coach Bret Bielema flops to draw penalty, celebrates flag (Video)

Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema is always up to something.

During Saturday’s Arkansas-Alabama game, Bielema got himself involved in a scuffle with Crimson Tide lineman Cam Robinson near the Razorbacks sideline.

Robinson had delivered a big hit on Arkansas’ Hjalte Froholdt at the end of a second quarter interception return, and when another Arkansas player got in the face of Robinson, two refs, along with Bielema, quickly intervened. Bielema, however, had other intentions and pretended like Robinson pushed him.

The act drew a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Robinson and Bielema was quick to celebrate.

The 15-yard penalty moved the ball all the way to the Alabama 12-yard line, and the Razorbacks cashed in with a touchdown three plays later.

That score gave Arkansas a 7-3 lead at halftime, but Alabama responded in the second half and went on to win 27-14.

Louisiana-Lafayette accused of major NCAA violations

$

The NCAA has accused former Louisiana-Lafayette assistant coach David Saunders of academic fraud, providing payments to recruits and failing to comply with an NCAA investigation.

Saunders is accused of directing “five or six” student athletes to a specific ACT testing center at Wayne County High in Mississippi on three separate occasions in February 2011. There, then-Wayne County High ACT supervisor Ginny Crager, either completed the tests or fixed wrong answers to improve tests scores.

Saunders also is accused of providing $6,500 to prospective a student athlete, who later played at Louisiana-Lafayette, for living and educational expenses while at a two-year college in the spring and summer of 2012.

Saunders also was accused of not fully cooperating with the NCAA investigation. He did two separate interviews with the NCAA, but declined a third after he was fired last October, and he refused to turn over his cell phone records.

While the allegations do involve recruits signed by coach Mark Hudspeth, the Notice of Allegations says the athletes, Hudspeth and recruiting coordinator Reed Stringer had no knowledge of the wrongdoing.

Saunders is currently working as an assistant coach in August by Pearl River Community College in Mississippi.

"We take the allegations very seriously and have fully cooperated with the investigation," ULL athletics director Scott Farmer said in a statement. "We've been committed to finding the truth as much as the NCAA."

The initial Notice of Allegations came May 22 and ULL issues a 78-page response on August 28. In that response, the Ragin’ Cajun self-imposed several penalties, including vacating the 2011 season, which included a New Orleans Bowl win.

It also imposed the following:

  • terminating Saunders;
  • a two-year probation period;
  • reducing initial football grants-in-aid (scholarships) by three in 2016-17 and three more in 2017-18;
  • reducing total grants-in-aid by five in 2015-16, by three in 2016-17 and by three in 2017-18;
  • reducing off-campus recruiting by 40 days in 2015-16 and ’16-17;
  • reducing official visits by recruits to 44 in 2014-15 and 38 in 2015-16; and
  • withholding unnamed players from competition.

According to a release by the university, ULL officials will appear at a confidential hearing with the NCAA later this fall. The NCAA Committee on Infractions will make its ruling several months later.

"Our university strives to comply with NCAA standards and maintains a comprehensive rules compliance program. We do not condone misconduct and take any suggestion of wrongdoing seriously," ULL president Dr. Joseph Savoie said.

ULL is 2-3 this season. The school thought about self-imposing a postseason ban for the 2015 season, but ultimately decided against it. Still, if the Ragin’ Cajuns do qualify for a bowl berth, the NCAA Committee on Infractions decision could limit a postseason opportunity.

USF OL Benjamin Knox arrested for shooting at exterior of dorm building

(via USF athletics)A USF football player is facing gun charges after a weekend incident.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, offensive lineman Benjamin Knox was charged with “possessing or discharging a firearm” and “shooting into an occupied dwelling” after USF police said he shot at the outside of the student dormitory where he lives on Sunday morning.

The alleged incident took place around 4 a.m. Sunday morning. Knox was arrested later that day.

From the Times:

Early Sunday morning, at about 4 a.m., a campus police officer heard gunshots on the north-central part of campus, near the Marshall Student Center. A student also called in a report of gunshots, followed by the sound of screeching tires.

Officers didn't find anyone at the parking garage, but when they searched it floor by floor, they came across a parked vehicle that held an open gun case and a box of .45-caliber ammunition "within plain sight."

They also found spent shell casings next to the car "where it appeared that several random shots were fired from a handgun," a USF police news release said.

Police said the shots fired took “chunks” out of the outside of Holly D residence hall. USF assistant police chief Chris Daniel said the shots appeared to be “random.”

“It doesn’t look like they were well-placed shots,” Daniel told the Times. “It looks like random squeezing of the trigger, and where they went, they went.”

The police traced the gun back to Knox since he was the owner of the vehicle that contained the ammunition.

Police traced the car to Knox, its owner. They approached him in his dorm room and recovered the .45-caliber handgun they said was used in the shooting. They took Knox into custody and transported him to the Hillsborough County jail for processing.

Knox, a redshirt freshman, has been indefinitely suspended from the team.

"We are in the process of gathering more information on the matter and are working with the proper authorities," said an athletic department statement. "This type of behavior is not consistent with the values of our institution and will not be tolerated."

The 6-foot-6, 291-pound Knox has appeared in all five games for the Bulls this season, including Saturday’s 45-24 home win over Syracuse.

UCF coach George O'Leary steps down from interim AD role

NEW ORLEANS, LA - OCTOBER 03: Head coach George O' Leary of the UCF Knights watches action during the third quarter of a game against the Tulane Green Wave on October 3, 2015 at Yulman Stadium in New Orleans, Louisiana. (Photo by Stacy Revere/Getty Images)UCF head coach and interim athletic director George O’Leary will step away from his athletic director role.

O’Leary announced the news at his Monday press conference and said it was his decision

O’Leary assumed athletic director duties on an interim basis in June after Todd Stansbury left to take the AD job at Oregon State. Previous reports indicated that O’Leary wanted to take the full-time athletic director gig, but it appears the school plans to look elsewhere.

UCF President John Hitt said last month that the school planned for O'Leary's tenure as AD to run through December.

From the Orlando Sentinel:

O'Leary replaced Todd Stansbury, who left to lead Oregon State's athletic department this summer. UCF President John Hitt told the Orlando Sentinel last month O'Leary's term would run through December, and then the school would evaluate his performance and to see if the football coach still wanted to pursue the job full-time.

UCF has hired a national search firm agency to fill the position.

UCF has struggled mightily on the field this season and dropped to 0-6 with a 40-13 home loss to UConn on Saturday. The Knights face undefeated Temple in Philadelphia on Saturday.

O’Leary, 69, has been UCF’s head coach since 2004. He told reporters that he will decide after the season if he will return in 2016.

In conjunction with O'Leary's decision to step aside, the school said Brad Stricklin will assume the interim athletic director position.

Florida QB Will Grier suspended after testing positive for PEDs

$

Florida starting quarterback Will Grier has been suspended for one year after reportedly testing positive for performance enhancing drugs. Mike Huguenin of Gridironnow.com had the initial report of the suspension.

Florida coach Jim McElwain confirmed the report at his Monday press conference. Grier also spoke to the media and said he took an over-the-counter supplement. The supplement in question was Ligandrol, which is billed as a steriod alternative that gives the benefits of a testosterone booster without the side effects of traditional steroids.

"I took an over-the-counter supplement and I did not check with the medical staff before taking it," Grier said. "I really hope that people can learn from this, learn from my mistake. I'm really, really sorry to everyone. Just really sorry."

McElwain said Grier will continue to work out with the team, but he will not be allowed to participate in competition.

NCAA positive tests for performance enhancing drugs carry a yearlong suspension by the NCAA. McElwain said he learned of the positive test on Sunday and that the university plans to appeal the length of the suspension.

If the yearlong suspension is upheld, Grier will be subject to NCAA drug testing throughout his suspension. In order to have eligibility restored, Grier will have to undergo an “exit test,” no sooner than the start of the 11th month of the one-year suspension, according to NCAA bylaws. The exit test must be requested by and paid for by Florida.

"We feel for [Grier], we feel his pain," McElwain said. "He had a chance to address the team and spoke from the heart. And one of the things that he expressed as we talked about this and we talked about it yesterday, it's the opportunity you have to maybe affect somebody else's life and just understand that we can learn from this."

Grier, a redshirt freshman, has helped lead the Gators to a 6-0 start and a 4-0 record in SEC play, which has them atop the SEC East.

Grier had been in tight competition with last year’s starting quarterback Treon Harris, but appeared to secure the starting role in the past couple weeks.

Grier has completed 65.8 percent of his passes for 1,204 yards with 10 touchdowns and three interceptions. He’s also rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns.

Northwestern will honor the 20th anniversary of its 1995 Rose Bowl team with throwback uniforms when it hosts Iowa on Saturday for homecoming.

That 1995 team featured current Wildcats head coach Pat Fitzgerald as a star linebacker. The team went 10-2 to win the Big Ten before losing to USC in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day.

Cincinnati quarterback Gunner Kiel has been cleared to practice this week and will compete with Hayden Moore to see who will start Friday’s game against BYU, coach Tommy Tuberville announced.

Kiel suffered a neck injury during a hit by a Memphis defensive player on Sept. 24 and was taken to the hospital for further tests. He had been held out of training since that time and freshman Moore has excelled in Kiel’s absence.

In games against Memphis and Miami, Moore has thrown for 836 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions. In the 34-23 win against Miami, Moore completed nearly 67 percent of his passes.

Kiel was the team’s starter at the beginning of the season, but has been knocked out of games against Miami-Ohio and Memphis with head and neck injuries. So far this season, he’s thrown for 868 yards, five touchdowns and five interceptions.

USC fires coach Steve Sarkisian

USC announced Monday that it has fired coach Steve Sarkisian one day after he was placed on a leave of absence.

“After careful consideration of what is in the best interest of the university and our student-athletes, I have made the decision to terminate Steve Sarkisian, effective immediately,” athletic director Pat Haden said in a statement Monday. "I want to thank Clay Helton for stepping into the interim head coach role, and I want to add how proud I am of our coaching staff and players and the way they are responding to this difficult situation.

"Through all of this we remain concerned for Steve and hope that it will give him the opportunity to focus on his personal well being."

Shortly after Sarkisian failed to show up to Sunday's practice, reports began to surface that he showed up to a special teams meeting intoxicated and ultimately left the building.

Haden met with media briefly Sunday and said he called Sarkisian and he wasn't well.

“It was very clear to me that he is not healthy,” Haden said Sunday.

This wasn’t the first time this year Sarkisian had had issues with alcohol. He used inappropriate language at a USC booster function in August and issued an apology saying he had mixed alcohol and medications.

However, Both the Los Angeles Times and L.A. Daily News posted stories and tweets that claim that Sarkisian’s trouble with alcohol has been prevalent since he arrived at USC.

Helton, the Trojans’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, served as the interim coach prior to Sarkisian’s hiring and led the Trojans to a win in the Las Vegas Bowl.

Sarkisian’s tenure as USC’s head coach lasted less than two seasons. He was 12-6 in that span.

ANN ARBOR MI - OCTOBER 10: Fullback Joe Kerridge #36 of the Michigan Wolverines runs for first down during the first quarter of the game as cornerback Matthew Harris #27 of the Northwestern Wildcats gives chase on October 10, 2015 at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Michigan. (Photo by Leon Halip/Getty Images)Northwestern will be without starting cornerback Matthew Harris for “the foreseeable future,” head coach Pat Fitzgerald said Monday.

Harris took a knee to the head during the second half of the Wildcats’ loss to Michigan on Saturday. He stayed down on the turf for several minutes before being carted off the field and into the locker room.

Fitzgerald told reporters that Harris has “a couple of broken bones in his face.” Fitzgerald did not offer a specific timetable for Harris’ return to the lineup, but said he could provide a clearer update after the team’s bye week that follows its Oct. 24 game at Nebraska.

Harris, a junior, has been a consistent presence in the Wildcats’ secondary since his freshman year in 2013 when he played in 12 games and made five starts with 36 tackles. Harris then started every game in 2014 as a sophomore, totaling 70 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, and two interceptions.

Through six games this season, Harris had 25 tackles and three interceptions.

Northwestern, dropped to 5-1 after the loss to Michigan, hosts 6-0 Iowa on Saturday in a big Big Ten West matchup.

USC letterman Brian Cushing loses bet, dons Washington gear (Photo)

Two members of the Houston Texas, running back Chris Polk and linebacker Brian Cushing, attached a friendly bet to the USC-Washington game from Thursday night.

By looking at this picture Polk, a former UW letterman, posted on his Instagram account, it’s not too hard to figure out who lost the bet.

As you can see by Polk’s smirk, Cushing, a standout at USC from 2005 to 2008, had to don Washington gear after the Huskies upset the Trojans 17-12 in Los Angeles.

The Trojans never lost to Washington during Cushing’s time with the program, so that may have added some additional sting to the defeat for Cushing.

Kansas State develops tearaway jersey to solve duplicate number problem (Video)

It looks like Kansas State’s equipment staff found a solution for a problem Florida State had earlier in the season.

Watch this video:

As you can see, two KSU staff members rip a No. 87 jersey off Dominique Heath, who normally wears No. 4. Why does Heath have to wear two jerseys, you ask? Well, like many other teams, Kansas State has more than 100 players on its roster, so the Wildcats have multiple players who have the same jersey number.

In this instance, the Wildcats have another No. 4 – sophomore defensive back Kaleb Prewitt.

So when Heath, a wide receiver who also returns kicks, plays on special teams alongside Prewitt, one of them has to wear a different number. Heath was obviously the odd man out, but Kansas State developed a unique and efficient technique to solve this issue.

Earlier this season, Florida State ran into the same problem with much different results.

Maybe the Florida State equipment staff will reach out to Kansas State for some pointers.
