Reports: UCF coach George O'Leary steps down

$

0

A day after his team fell to 0-8, UCF coach George O'Leary has resigned.

The news was first reported by ESPN. The Orlando Sentinel reported that O'Leary, 69, had retired.

It's O'Leary's second resignation of 2015. He was appointed the school's interim athletic director earlier in the year and resigned from that post two weeks ago. The Sentinel reports QB coach Danny Barrett will be named the team's interim coach while ESPN reports the resignation will be official by the school Sunday night.

Less than two seasons removed from a win in the Fiesta Bowl against Baylor, UCF has tumbled to the depths of college football. The team had a 10-7 lead early against Houston on Saturday and ended up losing 59-10.

Not only has UCF not played well in 2015, it has simply been overmatched. UCF has been outscored 267-120. It looks like there's no end in sight for the free beer at an Orlando establishment. With one more loss, UCF is set to have more losses than at any time in his tenure.

The news of O'Leary's resignation also comes shortly after discussion of his contract. He had refused to release the specifics of his deal – accessible because the university is a public one – after questioning from local media about a possible successor written into his contract.

O'Leary's career record at UCF is 81-68 and his overall record is 133-101. He previously coached at Georgia Tech from 1994-2001 and was briefly hired as Notre Dame's coach before the 202 season. He resigned at Notre Dame shortly after he was hired after inaccuracies in his resume were discovered.

Athlon Sports' most interesting stats from Week 8

$

0

Numbers and statistics are a huge part of college football. Every Sunday, reading updated box scores and stats is like Christmas for fans and media members. Some stats like total offense and total defense are overrated, but each help paint a picture for a team or particular game.

Whether the stats are historic, advanced or just an observation from a box score, Athlon Sports brings the most intriguing, important, historic and bizarre stats from around the weekend of college football action:

58-0: Miami’s Worst Loss in Program History

Al Golden’s tenure at Miami hit rock bottom in Saturday’s 58-0 loss to Clemson. The Hurricanes were thoroughly dominated by the Tigers on the stat sheet on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Brad Kaaya suffered a concussion in the first half and did not return. As a result, the offense managed only 146 total yards, converted six first downs, went 4 of 18 on third downs and lost three turnovers. The defense gave up 6.4 yards per play, 416 rushing yards, 33 first downs and 58 points. It was only a matter of time before Miami made a coaching change. And after the worst lost in program history, Golden was relieved of his coaching duties Sunday.

12: Points Scored by Missouri in its Last Three Games

Missouri’s offense wasn’t overly prolific last year (22.7 points per game in SEC contests), but this unit is struggling mightily in 2015. The Tigers have scored only 12 points in their last three games and have not scored an offensive touchdown since the third quarter of the 24-10 win against South Carolina on Oct. 3. The problems for this offense starts up front with an offensive line that has allowed 20 sacks, a lackluster rushing attack, while true freshman quarterback Drew Lock is experiencing growing pains in his first year in the program.

108: Points Scored in Friday’s Memphis-Tulsa Game, Most of any FBS Game in 2015

Two of the American Athletic Conference’s best offenses were on display Friday night. Memphis and Tulsa combined for 108 points in the Tigers’ 66-42 victory, which was the highest-scoring FBS game in 2015. Behind a rising star at quarterback in Paxton Lynch and a deep group of skill players, Memphis ranks third nationally in scoring offense (48.9 points per game).

12: Touchdowns by Ohio State QB J.T. Barrett in Last Three Games

Urban Meyer made the switch from Cardale Jones to J.T. Barrett as Ohio State’s starting quarterback prior to Saturday’s game against Rutgers. While the offense was productive behind Jones, Barrett seems to be the best fit for Meyer’s attack. The numbers back Meyer’s switch, as Barrett recorded 324 total yards against the Scarlet Knights and five overall touchdowns. In his last three games, Barrett has scored 12 touchdowns – more than Jones has all year – and Ohio State is 16 for 18 in its red-zone trips in that span.

1,433: Yards Needed by Christian McCaffrey to Break All-Purpose Record

Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey continued his run at the Heisman Trophy in Saturday’s win over Washington. The sophomore recorded 300 all-purpose yards against the Huskies, which is the second consecutive game McCaffrey has posted at least 300 all-purpose yards. Through seven contests, McCaffrey has 1,818 all-purpose yards and is on pace to break the single-season record by former Oklahoma State running back Barry Sanders (3,250 in 1988).

28: Florida State’s Win Streak Over ACC Teams Ends at Georgia Tech

Florida State’s 28-game winning streak against ACC opponents ended on Georgia Tech’s blocked field goal return for a touchdown as time expired on Saturday night. The loss to the Yellow Jackets was Florida State’s first in an ACC game since Oct. 6, 2012 and prevented coach Jimbo Fisher’s team from tying the conference record (29 consecutive wins) set by the Seminoles from 1992-95.

Related: College Football Coaches and Their Celeb Lookalikes

28: Career Pass Attempts by Baylor QB Jarrett Stidham

With Seth Russell sidelined indefinitely due to a neck injury, Baylor will hand the keys to its high-powered offense to Jarrett Stidham. The freshman was a top 50 recruit in the 2015 signing class and has looked sharp in limited action. Stidham has completed 24 of 28 passes for 331 yards and six touchdowns in seven appearances this year. It’s a small sample size, but Stidham’s totals and overall talent are impressive. Baylor’s playoff hopes hinge on how quickly Stidham settles into the starting role.

5: Nebraska Losses by 5 Points or Less in 2015

Nebraska might have the worst luck in close games of any team in college football this season. The Cornhuskers lost their fifth game of the year on Saturday, dropping a 30-28 matchup to Northwestern. Nebraska needs to win three of its last four to get to a bowl, but this team is just a couple of plays away from having a 5-3 or 6-2 record. All five of the Cornhuskers’ losses were by five points or less in 2015, including three by two points or less.

288: Mississippi State QB Dak Prescott Throws First Interception in 288 Passes

Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott turned in one of Week 8’s top performances by recording 465 overall yards and six total scores in the 42-16 win over Kentucky. However, Prescott tossed an interception against the Wildcats, ending a streak of 288 passes without a turnover. The streak was the third-longest in SEC history and a school record. With Prescott and Florida State’s Everett Golson tossing their first picks of the year, only two starters – LSU’s Brandon Harris and Arizona’s Anu Solomon – have yet to throw an interception in 2015.

100: Wins in a Row by Division III Powerhouse Mount Union

The stats in this column usually focus on the FBS level, but Mount Union’s impressive win streak deserves a mention in this space. The Purple Raiders earned their 100th consecutive victory on Saturday by defeating Wilmington 69-0 and have a chance to break their previous 110-game winning streak that stretched from 1994-05.

Miami fires coach Al Golden one day after blowout loss to Clemson

Miami has fired coach Al Golden.

The news was announced via the school’s website and Twitter account one day after the Hurricanes suffered a 58-0 loss to Clemson. It was the worst loss in school history.

“Coach Golden has led our program through some very difficult times and he has done so with class, integrity and a true desire to see our students succeed on the field, in the classroom and in the community.” athletic director Blake James said in a statement.  “However, we have a proud tradition of excellence at Miami, not just in football but in all sports, and we want to compete for ACC and national championships. I simply believe that now is the time to bring the Hurricane Family together and rally behind our young men.”MIAMI GARDENS, FL - OCTOBER 24: Head coach Al Golden of the Miami Hurricanes looks on during a game against the Clemson Tigers at Sun Life Stadium on October 24, 2015 in Miami Gardens, Florida. (Photo by Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images)

James maintained last week — and even after Saturday’s stunning loss — that he would wait until the end of the season before making a decision about Golden’s future. However, the outcries for new leadership have been loud by fans and even louder by former players, who took to Twitter during the Clemson game to express their displeasure with the state of the program.

Golden was 32-25 in five seasons at Miami and led the Hurricanes to bowl games in 2013 and 2014. The Hurricanes are 4-3 this season, but have lost three of their last four contests.

“On behalf of my family I want to thank the University of Miami for a tremendous opportunity,” Golden said in a statement. “I believe in what we are doing and how we are doing it and we have some outstanding young men in our football program. Though this moment is difficult, we wish the Canes the best of luck going forward.”

Assistant coach Larry Scott will finish the season as the interim head coach. Scott has been Miami's tight end coach and run game coordinator for the past three seasons.

Miami travels to No. 22 Duke this Saturday.

USC center Toa Lobendahn suffers torn ACL, out for the season

USC offensive lineman Toa Lobendahn suffered a torn ACL during Saturday’s 42-24 win against Utah and will miss the rest of the season.

The injury occurred during the first half.

It’s the second ACL injury on the Trojans offensive line this season. Starting center Max Tuerk suffered a torn ACL against Washington on Oct. 8.

Lobendahn started the season at right guard, but moved over to center after Tuerk’s injury. With Lobendahn out, sophomore Khaliel Rodgers will slide to center. Rodgers started three games at left guard in 2014.

USC is still in the race for the Pac-12 South title, but would need to win out and Utah would need to lose again. USC plays at Cal on Saturday. The Bears, which started the season 5-0, have lost their last two games.

Cast your vote for the best catch of Week 8 (Videos)

$
0
0

Each Monday, we’ll gather the best catches from the weekend (or the midweek games) and bring them here for you to vote on in a poll. There could be only a few nominees, or there could be five or six. It all depends on the weekend. If you have a catch you’d like to nominate, don’t hesitate to hit us up on Twitter (@YahooDrSaturday).

The voting remains open until Friday and the winner advances to a final, end of the year vote where the best catch of the season will be determined. And since we started this midway through the season, some of our favorite catches from the first half will re-surface at the end of the season as well. Don’t you worry.

There was a clear favorite for our Week 7 catch of the week before we even hit the weekend. Stanford’s Francis Owusu somehow made a catch without seeing the ball hit his hands in a Thursday night Pac-12 game against UCLA, but he pinned it against the back of Jaleel Wadood for an improbable touchdown and took home the Week 7 catch of the week.

As incredible as that catch was, Owusu didn’t completely run away with the voting. Uwusu took home 44 percent of the vote with Utah’s Kenneth Scott coming in second with 34 percent of the vote. Notre Dame’s Corey Robinson (9 percent) finished third with Kentucky’s Garrett Johnson (7 percent) and Nebraska’s De’Mornay Pierson-El (6 percent) rounding out the voting

Here are the Week 8 nominees:

Thomas Sperbeck - Boise State

Thomas Sperbeck has been one of Boise State’s top big-play threats over the past two seasons and is currently in the Top 20 nationally in yards per reception (19.6. He also is one of the more sure-handed wideouts in the Mountain West and showed that during the first half of the Broncos’ 34-14 win over Wyoming with this crazy one-handed snag. One of the best parts of the catch was his ability to cradle the ball in his right arm to secure the catch as he hit the turf.

Roger Lewis - Bowling Green

If you don’t watch a lot of MAC football, you’re missing out on impressive weekly displays from Bowling Green sophomore Roger Lewis. Lewis hauled in 73 passes for 1,093 yards and seven score in 2014 as a true freshman, and he’s already surpassed those yardage (1,122) and touchdown (11) totals through eight games this year. On Saturday in a 48-0 Falcons win over Kent State, Lewis made two highlight reel touchdown catches, including this crazy one-handed effort in the corner of the end zone.

Keith Heitzman - Ohio

Ohio senior Keith Heitzman was one of the team’s few bright spots in the Bobcats’ 41-17 loss at Buffalo on Saturday. Heitzman, a graduate transfer from Michigan, is also the first tight end to earn a nomination. He did so with a diving one-handed catch early in the fourth quarter. Heitzman finished the game with six catches for 83 yards and now has 19 catches for 280 yards and two TDs this season. Not too shabby for a guy who mainly played defensive line at Michigan.

James Washington - Oklahoma State

OSU's James Washington had one of the best games of his career to help Oklahoma State improve to 7-0 on the season with a win over Kansas. Washington led the Cowboys with six catches and 103 yards on the afternoon and reeled in this ridiculous one-handed touchdown on a great throw from Mason Rudolph.

Keyarris Garrett - Tulsa

Keyarris Garrett was a huge reason Tulsa kept things competitive with unbeaten Memphis on Friday night. The 6-foot-4, 221-pound senior caught 14 passes for a career-high 268 yards and three touchdowns, including a successful Hail Mary as time expired in the first half.  Tulsa QB Dane Evans lobbed one up into heavy traffic but two Memphis defensive backs couldn’t come up with the ball and Garrett was there to bring it in for a score.

Here's another view of the great concentration from Garrett.

So there are your five nominees for this week. Vote for your favorite in the poll below.

NMSU AD Mario Moccia says he has no plans to fire coach Doug Martin

$

Seven head coaching positions are already open in the FBS this year, but don’t expect New Mexico State to be the eighth.

Athletic director Mario Moccia said Sunday that despite a 52-7 home loss to Troy this past weekend, the school has no plans to part ways with coach Doug Martin.

“Doug Martin is our head coach,” Moccia said. “No changes are going to be made. Doug Martin is going to be our coach next year.”

New Mexico State is 0-7 this year and in the midst of a 17-game losing streak. Martin is 4-27 since taking over the Aggies in 2013, but overall, the program hasn’t had a winning record since 2002.

Moccia said decisions to switch coaches too often have contributed to the lack of consistency.

“We have for many years changed head coaches way too frequently,” Moccia said. “Last night’s loss, the biggest thing, was it was a shock. All of us thought that we would have a much better showing against a team that looked very similar to us. It was disappointing and embarrassing that we didn’t have the fight we had in previous games.”

Martin has two years remaining on his contract, including a one-year contract extension that NMSU announced in February.

Mark Mangino is out as Iowa State offensive coordinator

Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads announced a change to his coaching staff on Monday.

Rhoads told reporters at his weekly press conference that offensive coordinator Mark Mangino is no longer a part of the program. Rhoads said he and Mangino met Monday morning and that they could not “get on the same page on a few important items” with the offense.

“We tried to talk that through again this morning in an effort to get us moving in a different direction. In the end, Mark was not interested in that. I wish that wasn’t the case, but I respect and understand his conviction.” Rhoads said.

According to the Ames Tribune, Rhoads did not specify whether Mangino, who joined the program before the 2014 season, resigned or was fired.

Mangino previously spent eight seasons as the head coach at Kansas from 2002-09. He also served stints as an offensive assistant at Kansas State, Oklahoma (where he won a national title as offensive coordinator in 2000) and Youngstown State, his alma mater.

Rhoads said that passing game coordinator Todd Sturdy will move into the offensive coordinator role..

Iowa State dropped to 2-5 with a 45-27 loss to No. 2 Baylor over the weekend. The Cyclones host Texas on Saturday.

Idaho suspends WR Dezmon Epps after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend

$

Idaho star receiver Dezmon Epps has been suspended indefinitely, coach Paul Petrino announced Monday.

Epps is accused of allegedly assaulting his girlfriend Saturday night. According to Sports Illustrated, Epps’ girlfriend told police he struck her in the face. Epps denies the accusation. Epps has not been arrested or charged.

“I have zero tolerance for any inappropriate behavior toward women," Petrino said. "This is a serious allegation and I take it as such."

Petrino said the school was investigating the incident and that Epps could be reinstated if he committed no wrongdoing.

Epps’ career with the Vandals has been wrought with off-field issues. In June 2014, he pled guilty to a DUI and was removed from the team. A month later he was charged with theft.

However, Epps did enough to regain the confidence of Petrino and was reinstated this past spring. However, in June, he was charged with two driving-related misdemeanors. In August, Epps was one of two Vandals’ players caught on video stealing $285 of merchandise from the campus bookstore. He was suspended for the 59-9 loss to USC on Sept. 12.

Epps leads the team with 61 catches for 762 yards and two touchdowns this season. He’s also played defensive back in the Vandals nickel defense while the team works through injuries.

Idaho is 3-4 this season, the first time since 2010 the Vandals have won three games in a season. Idaho plays at winless New Mexico State on Saturday.

Conference USA commissioner Judy MacLeod (conferenceusa.com).Conference USA has hired Judy MacLeod as its next conference commissioner.

MacLeod becomes the first female conference commissioner in the FBS and just the third commissioner in the conference's history.

“Judy earned all of our respect and admiration during the many years she served as associate commissioner,” Conference USA Board of Directors Chair and Old Dominion president John R. Broderick said in a statement. “She is well-respected nationally and will be a strong voice for the conference on issues regarding the many important challenges and opportunities facing intercollegiate athletics. The Board of Directors and the Search Committee are delighted she will now lead us.”

MacLeod has been with C-USA since September 2005, and has been the Executive Associate Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer since April 2006. She’s been serving as the league’s interim commissioner since Sept. 15 when former commissioner Britton Banowsky officially stepped down.

“I feel very fortunate and appreciative of the confidence our member schools have placed in me to lead and serve the great group of universities in Conference USA,” MacLeod said in a statement. “We have a tremendous opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our student-athletes and I look forward to facing the challenges and opportunities together with our members.”

Baylor QB Seth Russell to have season-ending neck surgery

$

Baylor quarterback Seth Russell will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a broken bone in his neck.

Russell was injured during a four-yard run in the final minutes of a blowout win against Iowa State. He saw a specialist on Monday, who recommended surgery. Russell’s recovery time is expected to be six months.

“Seth exemplifies the spirit and will of our football team,” coach Art Briles said, “and through this our team will keep that spirit alive and well for him.”

This is a huge blow for a Baylor team that was not only contending for the Big 12 title, but also a spot in the College Football Playoff. So far this season, Russell had thrown for 2,104 yards and 29 touchdowns in his first season as a starter, and run for 402 yards and six scores. With him under center, Baylor was averaging 686.1 yards and 61.1 points per game.

Jarrett Stidham, a true freshman from Stephenville, Texas, will be the Bears new starting quarterback moving forward. Stidham has appeared in all seven of Baylor’s games and has completed 24-of-28 passes for 331 yards and six touchdowns. Sophomore Chris Johnson, who had moved to wide receiver during fall camp, will be the backup.

Russell leads the FBS in passing efficiency (189.7), passing touchdowns (29), passing yards per completion (17.68), points responsible for per game (30.0) and passing yards per attempt (10.52).

10 coaching candidates to replace Al Golden at Miami

$
0
0

(Photo by Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images)AthlonSports.com is a leading website for preseason and in-season football previews, predictions, rankings and analysis.

Miami coach Al Golden was fired on Sunday, one day after the Hurricanes suffered the worst loss in program history in a 58-0 defeat against Clemson. Golden worked for five years as Miami’s head coach, posting a 32-25 record in that span. Additionally, the Hurricanes were 17-18 under Golden’s watch in ACC play and only had one season of more than seven victories.

Tight ends coach Larry Scott will serve as the program’s interim coach for the final five regular season games (and potentially a bowl game).

Who will replace Golden at Miami? Here are 10 names to watch.

Rob Chudzinski, assistant coach, Indianapolis Colts

Chudzinski has ties to Miami but has never worked as a head coach on the collegiate level. The Ohio native played as a tight end with the Hurricanes from 1986-90 and started his coaching career in the program from 1994-95 as a graduate assistant. Chudzinski was later promoted to tight ends coach in 1996 and eventually called the plays for the Hurricanes from 2001-03. From 2004-15, Chudzinski worked in the NFL, including the 2013 season as Cleveland’s head coach.

Related: 10 Amazing College Football Stats from Week 8

(AP Photo/The Miami Herald, Charles Trainor Jr.)Mario Cristobal, offensive line coach, Alabama

Cristobal is a name many around the Miami program are familiar with, as the Alabama offensive line coach is a former Hurricane player and assistant. Cristobal played at Miami in the early 1990s and later worked as an assistant from 2004-06 in Coral Gables. Additionally, Cristobal was a head coach at FIU from 2007-12, recording a 27-47 record in that span. While the overall record at FIU wasn’t overly impressive, Cristobal inherited a mess and guided the Panthers to back-to-back bowl games in 2010-11.

Butch Davis, former Miami coach

Davis is a popular name among many in the Miami fanbase to replace Golden. However, just how realistic is Davis as a candidate considering his tenure at North Carolina ended with a NCAA scandal? Davis is one of the most qualified candidates on this list, as he worked as an assistant at Miami from 1984-88 and later served as the program’s head coach from 1995-00. Davis went 51-20 with the Hurricanes and 28-23 with North Carolina from 2007-10. He has not coached since his tenure ended in Chapel Hill in 2010.

Related: College Football Awards from Week 8

Justin Fuente, head coach, Memphis

Fuente will be one of the top names to watch in the coaching carousel this offseason. In four seasons with the Tigers, Fuente has guided Memphis to a 24-20 record, including a 17-3 mark over the program’s last 20 games. Fuente’s turnaround at Memphis is even more impressive when you consider the state of the program after two seasons (3-21) under Larry Porter from 2010-11. Does Miami have the necessary resources (money) to pursue Fuente?

(Photo by Sean Gardner/Getty Images)Tom Herman, head coach, Houston

Similar to Justin Fuente, Herman is another coach expected to draw a lot of interest from Power 5 programs this offseason. Herman is 7-0 in his first season with the Cougars, which is led by one of the nation’s most explosive offenses (47.6 points per game). Prior to taking over at Houston, Herman worked under Urban Meyer as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator (2012-14) and was arguably the nation’s best assistant in 2014. The Buckeyes lost starting quarterbacks J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones, yet the offense never missed a beat with Cardale Jones under center on the way to the national championship. Herman also has stops as an offensive coordinator at Iowa State, Rice and Texas State.

Related: Former Players and Fans Rip Al Golden After Miami's Loss to Clemson

Doc Holliday, head coach, Marshall

Holliday wouldn’t be a big-name hire, but there are plenty of reasons for Miami to be interested. The West Virginia native is regarded as an outstanding recruiter – the type of coach Miami would need to win battles for players in South Florida against Florida State and Florida. Holliday also has ties to the state of Florida after working on Urban Meyer’s staff in Gainesville from 2005-07. Marshall is 47-26 under Holliday’s watch, including a 30-6 mark over the last three seasons.

Rich Rodriguez, head coach, Arizona

Rodriguez already has a good job at Arizona, but his name is likely to pop up other coaching searches this offseason. He's 31-17 in four years with the Wildcats and won the South Division title last season. Additionally, Rodriguez went 60-26 at West Virginia and 15-22 before he was fired at Michigan. There's no question Rodriguez is one of the nation's top 25 coaches and is a proven winner. However, with other jobs (Virginia Tech?) likely to open, Miami will have to pay big to land Rodriguez. Do the Hurricanes have enough resources?

(AP Photo/Chris O'Meara, File)Greg Schiano, former Rutgers/Tampa Bay head coach

Schiano is another Miami assistant who could surface as a candidate for this job. The former Rutgers and Tampa Bay head coach has been out of football since he was fired from the Buccaneers at the end of the 2013 season. Schiano went 68-67 with the Scarlet Knights and guided the program to five consecutive bowl appearances from 2005-09. Schiano worked as Miami’s defensive coordinator from 1999-00.

Mark Stoops, head coach, Kentucky

Stoops is another former Miami assistant who could be targeted in this coaching search. The Ohio native is 11-20 in three years with Kentucky, but the Wildcats have showed marked improvement under his watch. After a 2-10 record in Stoops’ debut, Kentucky won five games in 2014 and is on track to make the program’s first bowl trip since 2010. Stoops started his coaching career in 1990 as a graduate assistant at Iowa and later worked as an assistant at USF, Wyoming and Houston before coaching defensive backs with the Hurricanes from 2001-03. After the three-year stint at Miami, Stoops worked as the defensive coordinator at Arizona and Florida State.

Brent Venables, defensive coordinator, Clemson

If Miami is willing to consider assistants for this job, Venables has to be near the top of the list. He’s regarded as one of the top assistants in the nation and certainly knows his way round the ACC after spending the last four years at Clemson. Venables played at Kansas State under Bill Snyder from 1991-92 and joined the program as a graduate assistant in 1993. After working as an assistant with the Wildcats, Venables was hired on Bob Stoops’ first staff at Oklahoma in 1999 and stayed in Norman until 2011. Venables has been a key piece in Clemson’s recent success and coordinated a defense that was arguably the nation’s best last season.

Longshots

(Photo by Joe Robbins/Getty Images)P.J. Fleck, head coach, Western Michigan

Fleck is the youngest coach on the FBS level, but it’s only a matter of time before he moves up the coaching ladder and has an opportunity at a Power 5 program. The former Northern Illinois receiver is regarded as an excellent recruiter and has brought steady improvement to Western Michigan since 2013. After a 1-11 record in his first season, Fleck guided the Broncos to an 8-5 mark last year and a 4-3 start in 2015. For a program needing energy and the ability to recruit against Florida State and Florida, Fleck is a potential fit in Coral Gables.

Lane Kiffin, offensive coordinator, Alabama

Kiffin will eventually get a chance to be a head coach once again. However, Miami seems like a longshot.

Chuck Pagano, head coach, Indianapolis Colts

Pagano has ties to the program as a former assistant, but he hasn’t coached on the collegiate level since 2007. He’s also on the hot seat with the Colts and would be more likely to stay in the NFL ranks.

Badgers head coach Paul Chryst announced Monday that center Dan Voltz (knee) is out for the rest of the regular season while wide receiver Robert Wheelwright (leg) is out indefinitely. According to BadgerBlitz.com, Chryst said Wheelwright could return to the field this season, possibly for a bowl game.

"You feel bad for the guys that miss time," Chryst said. "They've put a lot in to this, and they love playing the game. They love contributing to the success of this team."

Voltz, a redshirt junior, has been a starter for the Badgers since 2013, when he started six games. He also started all 14 games in 2014 and all but one game this season.

Chryst said Michael Deiter, who had been playing left guard, will slide over to center. Deiter started at center against Purdue while Voltz was out with an elbow injury.

Wheelwright, a junior, is second on the Badgers with 28 catches for 369 yards this year. He also leads the team with four touchdown receptions. Wheelwright combined for only three catches in his first two seasons with the program.

The Badgers played most of the Illinois game without quarterback Joel Stave, who suffered a concussion. Chryst said Stave is still going through the concussion protocol. In Stave’s absence, redshirt junior Bart Houston filled in and threw for 232 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Houston will start if Stave cannot play, Chryst said.

Now 6-2, the Badgers host Rutgers (3-4) on Saturday.

Former Rice and Michigan running back Sam McGuffie could be headed to the Olympics.

Yes, you read that right. McGuffie was announced Monday as one of 15 members of the United States National Bobsled Team, all of whom have a chance to earn a spot in the 2018 Olympic Games in PyeongChang, South Korea.

McGuffie, a native of Cypress, Texas, was a four-star recruit in the 2008 class whose highlight tapes went viral for his elite speed and impressive hurdles over opponents.

He signed with Michigan out high school and rushed for 486 yards and three touchdowns as a freshman, but left the school after one season (which was marred by concussions) to return to his home state and play for Rice. He dealt with injuries during his time at Rice but still managed to finish his career with 1,057 yards and seven touchdowns rushing and 102 catches for 1,059 yards and nine touchdowns receiving. His 102 receptions rank 11th in Rice history.

McGuffie also competed in track at Rice and finished second in the 2009 Conference USA Outdoor Championships in the long jump and third in the 2012 Conference USA Indoor Championships in the Heptathlon.

After his college career ended, McGuffie posted a 4.32 40-yard dash time at his Pro Day and participated in training camp with the Oakland Raiders in 2013. After the Raiders waived him, McGuffie had stints on the practice squads of the Arizona Cardinals and New England Patriots. He later spent the 2014 season with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League.

Former Virginia running back Hakeem Abdul-Saboor and former Oklahoma State wide receiver Nathan Gilsleider also made the U.S. Bobsled team.

Hey Miami, Ed Reed wants to be your next football coach

It’s been less than 24 hours since Al Golden was fired at Miami, but already some unexpected people are trying to throw their names into the coaching ring.

One of those is former star defensive back Ed Reed, who retired from a 12-year NFL career this past summer and is looking for a new gig.

“I was like, man, maybe put my name in the mix for a coaching job,” Reed told the Rich Eisen Show. “’Cause it seems like the head coach seems to just manage everybody, manage the game, you know, and try to help the offensive and defensive coordinators make the best decisions.”

“I haven’t received a call from a 305 number just so you know,” Reed added laughing.

Other than being able to relate to former players, not sure Reed is the ideal candidate to replace Golden and bring the program back to prominence.

The entire conversation between Reed and Eisen was started when Eisen remarked that unlike basketball, former football players rarely came back to coach their alma maters.

Reed, who owns Miami records for career interceptions (21), career interception return yards (389) and interceptions returned for touchdowns (5), said he’d listen if athletic director Blake James did reach out.

“I would definitely listen,” Reed said. “Definitely would go and talk and want to know where they’re trying to go, what they’re trying to do. What they’re looking to do. I would entertain it, yes.”

Nothing against Reed, but here's hoping Miami doesn't have to make this call.

Former UCF coach George O’Leary will remain on the Knights’ payroll as a “Special Liaison to the Director of Athletics on Football Operations” and earn an annual salary of at least $200,000.

O’Leary resigned as the school’s head coach on Sunday after the Knights started the year 0-8.

According to USA Today, an amendment was added to O’Leary’s contract in April 2014 that allowed O’Leary to remain on the payroll until March 15, 2020. O’Leary’s liaison role requires him to work no more than 12 hours with the athletic department in any one year.

“Following the Fiesta Bowl victory, UCF agreed to this provision in recognition of the accomplishments of the football program throughout Coach O’Leary’s career, both on the field and in the classroom,” Grant J. Heston, UCF’s vice president for communications and marketing, said in a statement.

O’Leary could have earned up to $235,000 a year until 2020 had he stayed on as interim athletic director. However, since he resigned that post Oct. 12, that number I adjusted downward.

UCF could not provide an exact figure for O’Leary’s salary going forward, but did say it would not be less than $200,000.

O’Leary had coached UCF since 2004 and was 81-68 with the Knights. In 2013, he led them to a Fiesta Bowl appearance.

Members of the Oklahoma City Thunder made a trip to Stillwater on Monday to visit victims of the Oklahoma State homecoming parade tragedy that occurred last Saturday.

Adacia Chambers, who was allegedly driving under the influence, came speeding through the parade, smashed into a police motorcycle and a crowd of people. The incident left four dead, including a 2-year-old boy, and 47 others injured. Eleven of the injured were 13 years old or younger.

As of Monday night, 17 people remained in the hospital and four in critical condition.

Chambers faces four counts of second-degree murder. She made her first court appearance Monday and her bail was set for $1 million.

At the time of the incident several members of the Oklahoma Thunder sent out tweets offering their prayers and well wishes, but this gesture went above and beyond and brightened the spirits of several people who needed it the most.

Chris Clark, the freshman tight end who signed with UCLA and parted ways with the Bruins in September, will not be transferring to Syracuse.

Clark committed to the Orange recently. He had left the Bruins and went back home to New Jersey. He had started looking at new destinations and Syracuse became a top choice. According to CuseConfidential.com, he committed to Syracuse on October 15.

And, according to Clark, Syracuse isn't accepting his commitment.

"They decided to go a different way and not honor my commitment," Clark told CuseConfidential.com.

He told the site that he was excited to commit to Syracuse.

"I was pumped also. I don't understand," Clark said.

Clark was a four-star tight end in the class of 2015. He was the top-rated tight end in the last recruiting class and was part of UCLA's No. 13 ranked recruiting class. He's not the only member of the class that's left the team already either. Cordell Broadus, Snoop Dogg's son, quit playing football to pursue other interests. He was also a four-star recruit.

Sam Ukwuachu transferred from Boise State to Baylor in 2013. (AP)A request for a new trial from former Baylor defensive end Sam Ukwuachu was denied.

According to the Waco Tribune, Ukwuachu, who was convicted in August of sexually assaulting a female Baylor soccer player in October 2013, had his motion for a new trial overruled in Waco District Court on Monday.

Ukwuachu, 22, was sentenced to 180 days in prison and 10 years’ probation and has been incarcerated in McLennan County Jail since his August conviction. Ukwuachu’s attorney said he will appeal the conviction.

Ukwuachu was a standout defensive end at Boise State but was dismissed from the program for unspecified reasons. It was revealed during his trial that he had been accused of physically assaulting his then-girlfriend and had other behavioral and anger issues while at Boise.

Nonetheless, he landed at Baylor in the spring of 2013, a few months before the sexual assault occurred.

Ukwuachu never played a down for Baylor. He was held out of action in 2013 due to NCAA transfer rules and again did not play in 2014 for what Baylor called a “violation of team rules.”

Jim Harbaugh has excellent trick-or-treating advice

$

(Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images)Jim Harbaugh has trick-or-treating advice for you. He wants you to be "hustling at all times."

Seriously. The Michigan coach was asked about his trick-or-treating advice in an interview with WXYZ in Detroit. And just like you would expect, Harbaugh's advice is all about maximizing your Halloween return.

"They’ve been working on them," Harbaugh said when asked about his kids' costumes. "I’ve been trying to advise them to get two costumes, to be go-getters. You can hit the neighborhood in one costume and better to jog and run from house to house, then you can get more candy than everybody else. Come home, make a quick change into a second costume and hit those same houses again."

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

That Harbaugh, always thinking. He also told WXYZ that he was the kid who went with the standard white sheet as a ghost for Halloween. And you know, it makes total sense when you combine it with his khaki obsession. He probably knew as a kid that prep time on a costume didn't matter when it came to your candy intake. It was all about being the most efficient trick-or-treater possible.

You can watch the full interview here.
