Sad news: UCLA QB Josh Rosen no longer has a hot tub in his dorm

We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but we’ve got some bad news: UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen no longer has a hot tub in his dorm room.

According to TMZ, the hot tub was removed from Rosen’s room after photos of his awesome setup went viral. UCLA Associate Media Director Ricardo Vazquez told TMZ that the hot tub is “gone.”

“We have been told that the hot tub has been removed from his room,” Vazquez said.

(instagram.com/totallychristine/)

Additionally, Vazquez said that the presence of the hot tub was a violation of UCLA’s residential housing policy which prohibits “furnishings which are not officially designated as part of a residential room’s accessories.”

All good things must come to an end, I suppose. So long, sweet prince.

Report: Missouri reinstates QB Maty Mauk

$

0

Missouri QB Maty Mauk is back with the team after a four-week suspension.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Mauk was reinstated from his indefinite suspension on Sunday. He was suspended before Missouri's game against South Carolina for a violation of team rules. The cause of the suspension has not been made public.

Mauk, a junior, missed games against the Gamecocks, Florida, Georgia and Vanderbilt. Missouri beat South Carolina but has lost the last three. And in those last three, the Tigers haven't scored a touchdown. Missouri is No. 5 in scoring defense but No. 126 in scoring offense. That has to be one of the largest discrepancies in the history of college football.

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

He was replaced by freshman Drew Lock at quarterback. It's no stretch to say that, as Missouri hasn't found the end zone, Lock has struggled. According to the Dispatch, it's unclear where Mauk will be on the depth chart. Missouri is off this week to prepare for a Thursday night game against Mississippi State on November 5.

Mauk was 57-110 for 654 yards passing with six touchdowns and four interceptions before his suspension. Lock is currently 77-152 for 763, three touchdowns and three interceptions.

Missouri is 4-4 and 1-4 in the SEC.

Athlon Sports' remaining games that will shape the College Football Playoff

$
0
0

I know what you are thinking: "Every game matters." Not in this case.

As the 2015 college football season charges down the home stretch, there is a clear path to a championship forming right before our eyes. The football gods have given us 25 games between now and bowl season that will undoubtedly decide which four teams will qualify for the College Football Playoff.

Get out your calendars and set your DVRs.

Oct. 31
Georgia vs. Florida
The Gators must get to the SEC title game with only one loss on their resume in order to stay in the conversation.

Notre Dame at Temple
The Irish need to win out to stay alive. A win for Temple catapults them up the polls and into the conversation.

Nov. 7
Michigan State at Nebraska
The Huskers have nothing left to lose. The Spartans can't afford to lose.

Oklahoma State at Texas Christian
This is the first game of a four-team round-robin in the Big 12.

Florida State at Clemson
Florida State stays alive with a win and is eliminated with a loss. This is likely for a spot in the ACC Championship Game.

LSU at Alabama
A second loss eliminates the Tide. An LSU loss creates a three-way tie with Alabama and Ole Miss.

Nov. 14
Oklahoma at Baylor
Game 2 of the Big 12 four-way round-robin.

Pitt at Duke
The winner likely heads to the ACC Championship Game with one loss.

Memphis at Houston
An unbeaten dream season is on the line.

Nov. 21
Michigan State at Ohio State
The loser likely misses out on the Big Ten Championship Game and drops out of the College Football Playoff conversation.

Texas Christian at Oklahoma
TCU's final road game of the season before hosting Baylor.

Baylor at Oklahoma State
Each team has a signature contest the following week.

Memphis at Temple
If both are still unbeaten at this point, the winner should find itself comfortably inside the College Football Playoff committee's top 10.

UCLA at Utah
Utah needs to hold off Josh Rosen and the Bruins to stay in the conversation.

LSU at Ole Miss
The Rebels could clinch the SEC west with a win.

Nov. 27
Iowa at Nebraska
This is far and away Iowa's toughest remaining game. The Hawkeyes will be in the College Football Playoff conversation until they lose. Nebraska could be playing for bowl eligibility.

Baylor at Texas Christian
Odds are the winner takes the Big 12 title and likely clinches a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Nov. 28
Ohio State at Michigan
This is possibly Ohio State's last major hurdle. Michigan has an outside shot at a division title with a win.

Oklahoma at Oklahoma State
There's a chance that the winner of this one comes out on top of the Big 12, giving a whole new meaning to "Bedlam."

Stanford at Notre Dame
If neither team loses another game between now and then, this will be a College Football Playoff elimination game.

Dec. 5
AAC Championship
This game could yield the only unbeaten conference champion in FBS.

B1G Championship
Likely Iowa against either Ohio State, Michigan or Michigan State. Three of the four possible matchups could mean an automatic Playoff bid to the winner.

Pac-12 Championship
If Stanford plays Utah and each team has only one loss, it'll be tough to keep the winner out of the final four.

SEC Championship
Both participants could enter the game with at least one loss. If both teams have two losses when it's over, we're likely looking at an SEC-free College Football Playoff.

ACC Championship
The odds say this will be Duke and Clemson. If neither team adds a loss between now and then, the winner, like the Pac-12, will be tough to turn away.

Texas A&M is opening up its quarterbacking competition

$

0

Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin said Tuesday that he’s opening up the quarterbacking competition after starter Kyle Allen's struggles in the past two games.

Allen, Kyler Murray and Jake Hubenak will compete for the starting role this week and Sumlin said he’d name a starter Friday for Saturday’s game against South Carolina.

In the past two games — both losses — Allen has thrown four interceptions
and just one touchdown pass. Three of those interceptions went for touchdowns against Alabama.

The offense that was steamrolling opponents at the beginning of the year has been almost nonexistent during the past couple weeks. Allen completed just 35.3 percent of his passes in last week’s 23-3 loss to Ole Miss before being benched in the fourth quarter.

Murray has appeared in five games but did not play against Ole Miss for what Sumlin declared was a disappointing week of practice. However, several reports said Murray lashed out at offensive coordinator Jake Spivatal during thr loss to Alabama. Murray apologized the following Monday, but he didn’t even warm up against Ole Miss.

Murray has shown he's a fast and elusive runner, but his grasp of A&M’s passing offense isn’t quite there yet. He’s completed 17 of 31 passes for 167 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions.

Hubenak, who played the fourth quarter against Ole Miss and completed 6 of 11 passes for 46 yards, had terrific numbers as a junior college player at Blinn. He completed 216 of 333 passes for 4,052 yards and 47 touchdowns with just nine interceptions in eight games.

Minnesota coach Jerry Kill retires for health reasons

$

Minnesota coach Jerry Kill is retiring.

The retirement is effective immediately and because of health reasons. Kill, who has epilepsy and recovered from kidney cancer in 2005, has suffered seizures during his coaching career.

"This is not the way I wanted to go out out but you all know about the struggles and I did my best to change," Kill said while fighting back tears. "But some of those struggles have returned. And I don’t want to cheat the game. And I ain’t gonna change.

"I’ve taken, I’ve hit everything I could," Kill continued. "I listened to my doctor 2.5 years ago, somewhat, but I did what it took. I knew our team needed some help. I tried some stuff I had to do, I took my own self off of because I couldn’t think the way I wanted to think.

"So, with that, my doctor told me it’s in my best interest for my family, my kids, hopefully grandkids someday that if I didn’t go and move on with my life that I may be a guy that don’t think too good down the road, and I want to be able to think"

Throughout his press conference, Kill, who called this the toughest thing he's ever done, spoke slowly and chose his words carefully. It was a sobering reminder of the importance of life over football and it was easy to see how much the decision tore at Kill.

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

"I know somebody will ask ‘Coach, what are you going to do?’" Kill said. "I don’t know. I haven’t done anything else. That’s the scary part."

He leaves the Gophers with a 29-29 record. Minnesota is 4-3 in 2015 after finishing 8-5 in 2014. The Gophers play Michigan on Saturday.

Kill has said he's had seizures in the past year. He missed seven games on a leave of absence in 2013 after he suffered a seizure on the field. He was replaced by defensive coordinator Tracy Claeys, who will be the interim coach for the rest of 2015.

Kill finishes his head-coaching career with a career record of 152-99. Before arriving at Minnesota, he was the head coach at Northern Illinois, Southern Illinois, Emporia State and Saginaw Valley State. He was 23-16 at NIU before he took the Minnesota job in 2011.

His retirement also means there are now eight coaching vacancies at the FBS level. Both South Carolina and UCF have had coaches retire while Maryland, USC, North Texas, Miami and Illinois have fired coaches during the season.

Heisman Watch Week 9: LSU's Leonard Fournette out in front of pack

$
0
0

The college football season is through Week 8, which means we have enough data to start thinking about legitimate Heisman contenders.

Every week, Dr. Saturday will name its five Heisman contenders in order with our favorite on top. As we saw last year, the list can change pretty quickly depending on the week.

LSU's Leonard Fournette has been the Heisman favorite from the third week of the season and he’s done nothing since to lessen his chances. He rushed for 150 yards against Western Kentucky last week, which was his "worst" performance of the season.

However, Fournette will have his toughest test on Nov. 7 when he takes on an Alabama defense that’s ranked fourth in the country.

TCU's Trevone Boykin has been nothing short of spectacular this season and has been the reason TCU remains undefeated as we head into the second half of the season.

He’ll have another chance to strengthen his hold on the No. 2 spot this week against a West Virginia defense that held him to a season-low 166 yards a year ago.

Corey Coleman’s work through Baylor’s first seven games has been dynamic. However, news that quarterback Seth Russell will miss the rest of the season with a neck injury could diminish Coleman’s chances of making a trip to New York.

The Bears have a bye this week before facing Kansas State on Nov. 5. It will be interesting to see whether the Bears stick with the pass-first gameplan or lean on their running game.

Stanford's Christian McCaffrey flew under the radar early, but after gaining at least 200 rushing/receiving yards in three of his past four games, the sophomore running back is quickly emerging as a viable Heisman contender.

McCaffrey, who is also a big reason why the Cardinal have won six consecutive games by double digits, leads the nation in all-purpose yards with 259.7 yards per game.

Florida State's Dalvin Cook has been the main reason why Florida State has had so much success this season, but his production in last week’s loss to Georgia Tech raised questions about Cook’s health since he’s been dealing with a hamstring injury.

Cook only had six touches in the second half against the Yellow Jackets, but he did finish the game with 82 rushing yards and a touchdown, and 52 receiving yards.

LSU's Malachi Dupre and Brandon Harris help woman and son in floodwaters

LSU wide receiver Malachi Dupre and quarterback Brandon Harris helped a woman and her diabetic son whose car was trapped in floodwaters near Tiger Stadium on Sunday.

The Tigers' win over Western Kentucky on Saturday night acme in the remnants of Hurricane Patricia. The rain from the storm system pelted the region over the weekend and caused flash flooding. The woman drove her car into water and while she and her son were able to get out after the car was stuck, they didn't take the boy's insulin with them when they scrambled out of the car.

That's where Dupre and Harris come in. They went into the water and retrieved the son's insulin from the car per LSU officials.

From WWLTV.com:

"I'm told that two of our guys during that monsoon that we had stepped in and helped a stranded motorist and her child," Miles said to reporters after practice Tuesday night. "Basically they went into a car that had insulin in it for a diabetic son, went under water and got it. That was Brandon Harris and Malachi Dupre doing good things on their own without direction."

Harris and Dupre called an audible.

"In fact, I would've probably told them to stay out of the water," Miles said. "But truth of the matter is that they knew better. Great that everybody's healthy, and it was a great move. But you know what, there's a lot of real quality people on this team. It's a football team brought together to get an education and play championship football, but there's a lot of stories like that go untold that are pretty special."

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

Harris threw for 286 yards and three touchdowns against Western Kentucky while Dupre had three catches for 86 yards and a score. The Tigers won 48-20 and are off Saturday in preparation for the showdown with Alabama in Tuscaloosa on November 7.

Miami QB Brad Kaaya likely to miss start against No. 22 Duke

$

Miami quarterback Brad Kaaya missed practice again on Wednesday almost assuring that redshirt freshman backup Malik Rosier will start Saturday’s game against No. 22 Duke.

Kaaya suffered a concussion in the first half of last week’s loss to Clemson and did not return to the game. Rosier took over and completed just 7 of 22 passes for 42 yards and two interceptions.

“For me to be starting because he’s hurt is awkward,” Rosier said after Tuesday’s practice. “Of course I want to play, but I don’t want him hurt. That’s like my best friend.”

Kaaya has not been allowed to watch film and Rosier said the sophomore has spent a lot of time at their home. Rosier said Kaaya’s given him pointers and that he feels better going into this contest against Duke than he did stepping in against Clemson.

Rosier has taken all the first team snaps at practice this week as the Hurricanes not only attempt to shake of last week’s 58-0 loss, the worst loss in school history, but also the firing of head coach Al Golden.

"For me personally it was a big learning stage [Saturday]," Rosier said. "It was something that when I woke up the next day, I felt terrible. I felt I let Brad down. ... He told me 'No you're fine.' He said, 'That's over with. We've got Duke. I need you to win that for me.' "

Former Syracuse QB AJ Long wants to continue playing career

Former Syracuse quarterback AJ Long was medically disqualified from playing football by the school because of multiple concussions. He said Tuesday that he's looking to transfer from Syracuse and continue his playing career.

The school said Long had been deemed unable to play football by the team doctor on October 13.

Long told Syracuse.com on Tuesday that he felt he could still play.

"I could still play right now," Long said. "It's just making sure I have a clean bill of health."

Given what he's said previously, a program taking a chance on him with a scholarshop may be dicey. And that's even if he's medically cleared in the first place.

After the news of his disqualification, Long had told the site that he "couldn't even tell you" how many concussions he had suffered in the last few years. The announcement that he couldn't play football any longer came after his third diagnosed concussion. Long told Syracuse.com that after each concussion he had headaches and needed to spend significant time in the dark as he recovered.

Long played in six games in 2014. He was 89-165 passing for 935 yards, four touchdowns and eight interceptions. A three-star recruit in the class of 2014, Long would have been a sophomore in 2015. He'll have three more years of eligibility if he transfers.

Miami DT Michael Wyche arrested for battery, suspended indefinitely

Miami defensive tackle Michael Wyche was arrested on charges of misdemeanor domestic battery Wednesday morning.

He has been indefinitely suspended from the team.

Wyche was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center around 5 a.m. Wednesday morning and, according to the Palm Beach Post, was still there in the afternoon waiting on a $1,500 bail. The paper also noted that Wednesday was Wyche’s 23rd birthday.

The university said in a statement that it was aware of Wyche’s arrest and other than a suspension, the school would have no further comment.

Wyche, a redshirt senior, is a junior college transfer that came to the Hurricanes in 2014. In 10 games as a reserve that season, he recorded nine tackles and 0.5 sacks. He played in the first four games of this season, but did not record a stat.

Iowa RB Jordan Canzeri likely to miss game against Maryland

No. 10 Iowa will be without its leading rusher when it takes on Maryland.

Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz said running back Jordan Canzeri would miss Saturday's game. Canzeri suffered a left ankle injury in Iowa's game against Northwester on October 17. He left the game after just four carries and didn't return.

The good news, Ferentz said Tuesday afternoon, is that Canzeri may not miss more than a game or two. The injury didn't look pretty as Canzeri's ankle twisted awkwardly.

"He's making good progress," Ferentz said via HawkeyeReport.com. "It was a lot better two days after than we maybe anticipated. So that's good news, and I think he's feeling better by the day, but to say when he'll be ready to play, I'm not sure yet."

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

Canzeri, a senior, has 136 carries for 698 yards and nine touchdowns in 2015. Against Illinois the week before the game against Northwestern, he had 43 carries for 256 yards. He's already set career single-season highs in carries and yards.

And while Canzeri may be out, Ferentz said he "thinks" runnung back LeShun Daniels should be able to play.

Daniels, who has the second-most carries on the team behind Canzeri, has missed the Illinois and Northwestern games after suffering a right-ankle injury against Iowa State. Daniels has 52 carries for 226 yards.

Arizona State unveils Pat Tillman-themed uniforms for Oregon game

$
0
0

Arizona State has Pat Tillman-centric uniforms to match its cleats for Thursday night's game against Oregon.

The school previously unveiled the special combat boot-themed cleats it would wear against the Ducks and released the uniforms for the game Thursday morning.

The uniforms are throwbacks to the ones that Tillman wore when he played at Arizona State. The former Arizona Cardinals safety left the NFL to join the Army after the attacks on September 11, 2001. He was killed in a friendly fire incident in Afghanistan in 2004.

Adidas said the uniforms were designed in collaboration with the school and the Pat Tillman Foundation "to deliver the perfect blend of a retro look with a tribute to the military and Tillman." The foundation gives scholarships to veterans. "Tillman" will be on the nameplate of all of the uniforms.

Tillman is also featured on the front of the undershirt and a quote of his is on the back.

We do wonder, however, if the uniforms are more of a tribute to Tillman or a way for Adidas to try to one-up Nike. Remember, Oregon is the school of Nike founder Phil Knight. Here's the first two paragraphs from the write-up about the uniforms on Arizona State's official site.

Given the quote from Tillman on the back, we're not so sure he'd have wanted his image to turn into leverage for a brand ego-measuring contest. And while we're cognizant that all special uniforms are a way for brands to gain exposure, we're left wondering if Adidas and the school should have done a better job of hiding that fact this week.

NC State to wear alternate uniforms for Military Appreciation Day (Photos)

NC State will wear an alternate uniform as part of Military Appreciation Day at Carter-Finley Stadium.

The program said in a release that the uniforms are meant to “pay homage to the brave men and women who serve our country at home and abroad.”

“Military Appreciation Day has become a very special event for our team,” head coach Dave Doeren said in a release. “We wanted to wear our next alternate uniform to honor those who serve and I think the color and design of the IRONWOLF uniform accomplishes that.”

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

The name “IRONWOLF” comes from the team slogan, “Iron Sharpens Iron.”

"When two iron blades are rubbed together, each blade gets sharper and more efficient," Doeren said. “The same is true in the military and in football. We rely on each other to make each other better.”

NC State (5-2, 1-2) will debut the new look on Nov. 21 against Syracuse. The Wolfpack hosts No. 3 Clemson this weekend.

Dan Mullen: 'I'll never comment on an injury again'

$
0
0

Dan Mullen is not a fan of injury news being reported by the people that cover his football team.

The Mississippi State coach was asked Tuesday about the availability of a player. Mullen cut the reporter off before he was able to finish the question and had this to say (comments start at the 4:30 mark).

"I expect everybody to play. And I’ll never comment on an injury again. Because you guys obviously don’t need me to comment on injuries. Because you know more than I do. You report more than I would ever say for the benefit,  of the young people’s benefits, not so you could get a scoop out … we’ll never comment on an injury in this program again so please don’t ever ask."

We'd like to give Mullen the benefit of the doubt here. Maybe he was having a bad day. Because there's no way a coach would be this petty, right?

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

We're guessing his reaction has something to do with the report about star cornerback Will Redmond from last week. The Jackson Clarion-Ledger reported that Redmond had torn an ACL. When asked about Redmond's injury, Mullen made the following comments.

“We don’t talk about injuries in our program. You want to find out about our program, buy a ticket and show up on Saturday.”

You'll notice that Mullen said then that his program doesn't talk about injuries. So how will he ever comment on an injury "again" if his program doesn't do it in the first place?

His Tuesday line about not revealing injuries for the sake of the players is weak as well. You can make the argument that being upfront about a player's health status is in the player's best interest. It would reduce the number of questions as to why a player is not playing or missed time at practice. In very few instances is relaying the actual cause of something a bad idea.

But of course, we say that as members of the media and not as a paranoid football coach who may not want to talk about the availability of players for strategic reasons. And if that's the case, Mullen should be up front about it and let his team's fans know that he's the reason they won't get much official information. It's a lot easier to understand than coachspeak about wanting to protect his players.

Boise State, Oregon State both lose starting tackles to injury

(AP Photo/Otto Kitsinger)Both Boise State and Oregon State will be without their starting left tackles for an extended period of time.

Boise State head coach Bryan Harsin said earlier this week that senior Rees Odhiambo suffered an ankle injury in last Saturday’s win over Wyoming. According to the Idaho Press-Tribune, Odhiambo was scheduled to have surgery on Tuesday and could potentially return for a bowl game.

“I don’t know if we’ll get him back or not,” Harsin said. “Everybody heals differently, so I don’t know. … I hope we can get him back, but more importantly just get him healthy.”

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

Odhiambo, a senior, has started all seven games for the Broncos this season. He played in 24 games during his first three seasons with the program, including 17 starts.

The Broncos, who improved to 5-2 by beating Wyoming, face UNLV in Las Vegas on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Oregon State also lost left tackle Sean Harlow to a season-ending ankle injury. According to the Corvallis Gazette-Times, Harlow went down during the second half of the Beavers’ loss to Colorado on Saturday.

Harlow, a junior, has started 28 straight games for the Beavers, dating back to his freshman season.

Sophomore Will Hopkins filled in when Harlow went down, and Hopkins is slated to get the start when the Beavers (2-5) take on Utah in Salt Lake City on Saturday.

Report: OSU WR Jhajuan Seales arrested for DUI

Oklahoma State wide receiver Jhajuan Seales was arrested for DUI over the weekend.

From the Stillwater News-Press:

Seales faces one count of “operating a motor vehicle while having a blood or breath alcohol content of 0.08 or higher,” and one count of “transporting an opened container of intoxicating beverage,” according to court records.  Both are misdemeanors.

Seales posted bond Monday, according to court records.

Oklahoma State is aware of the situation and is handling it internally, per a team spokesman.

Seales has 12 catches for 164 yards and a touchdown in 2015. According to the News-Press, Seales was arrested on Sunday. Saturday morning, a woman arrested on suspicion of DUI drove her car into a crowd watching the Oklahoma State homecoming parade. Four people were killed in the incident and over 30 were injured.

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

It's also not the first time Seales has been arrested while allegedly operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested with then-teammate Juwan Offray in October of 2014 after the two were found asleep in a car in the drive-thru at a Stillwater Whataburger. According to the police report about the 2014 arrest, Seales was unable to turn the car off himself.

Offray was dismissed from the team after the Whataburger incident.

Ohio State self-reports 6 minor violations, including Braxton Miller Instagram post

FILE - In this Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015, file photo, Ohio State receiver Braxton Miller, left, talks with head coach Urban Meyer after their NCAA college football game against Hawaii in Columbus, Ohio. Meyer devised an offense in which some receivers are not just receivers. The position is called H-back as in hybrid and it has been a great way to get that player who is not quite a tailback and not quite a wide receiver lots of touches and plenty of room to operate. According to The Lantern, which obtained the list of violations via a public-records request, one of the reported violations was Braxton Miller’s Instagram post from March that promoted AdvoCare, a nutritional supplement.

Once it became aware of the post, OSU’s compliance department asked Miller (who was not named in the list of violations) to remove the post, which he did a few hours later. Miller was initially declared ineligible, but was reinstated without any conditions by the NCAA a few weeks later.

“In response to the violation, the Compliance Office met with the student-athlete, the football coaches, and staff to provide additional education related to the incident,” OSU’s report read. “Further, the student-athlete was immediately declared ineligible until reinstated by the NCAA.”

Another noteworthy self-reported violation appears to involve quarterback Cardale Jones. The violation details a football player’s attendance of Cleveland Browns cornerback Joe Haden’s celebrity softball game, which Jones attended.

Here’s what the violation says:

On June 6, 2015, a football student‐athlete attended the Joe Haden Celebrity Charity Softball Game in Cleveland, Ohio. Prior to attending the celebrity game, the student‐athlete was told by the Compliance Office and football staff that he was neither permitted to attend nor play in the game. The student‐athlete told the Compliance Office and football staff that he would not attend the game. However, on the morning of the event, the student‐athlete called his position coach and asked if he could attend the celebrity game. The coach gave the student‐athlete permission to attend the game provided that he did not play. As such, the student‐athlete attended the celebrity game, appeared on the field, but did not play in the game. Because the institution did not provide written approval for the student‐athlete to appear at the Joe Haden Celebrity Charity Softball Game, a violation occurred.

The violation had no bearing on Jones’ eligibility, but the compliance staff sent the team a “letter of education” to emphasize “rules regarding promotional activities" after it occurred.

The other four football violations included: a walk-on who was ineligible to travel with the team to the Sugar Bowl, an impermissible phone call from head coach Urban Meyer to a recruit, special teams coach Kerry Coombs posting a photo of high school coaches in front of the national championship trophy on his Twitter account and a current football player tweeting about a class of 2016 recruit.

FSU RB Dalvin Cook will not play against Syracuse

Florida State running back Dalvin Cook will not play in Saturday’s game against Syracuse, according to coach Jimbo Fisher.

Cook suffered an ankle injury during last week’s loss to Georgia Tech, which limited his carries in the second half of that game. He’s also been dealing with a nagging hamstring injury that caused him to miss the majority of the contest against Wake Forest earlier in the month.

Cook has been the most consistent aspect of the Seminoles offense. He has 127 carries for 1,037 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also has 181 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Giving Cook a weekend off wouldn’t be the worst thing, especially with a pivotal game against division-leader Clemson on Nov. 7.

Nebraska junior Ryker Fyfe will start Saturday’s game against Purdue in place of injured starter Tommy Armstrong Jr.

Armstrong aggravated a foot injury during last week’s 30-28 loss to Northwestern and has missed the last four practices while his foot was in a walking boot.

Coach Mike Riley said Armstrong took a step backward in his rehabilitation this week, but he felt confident that the problem would not be long term.

Riley also expressed confidence in Fyfe, whose only action this year came against South Alabama on Sept. 12 where he completed 5 of 7 passes for 33 yards and a touchdown. Fyfe, a former walk-on, appeared seven games a year ago and made four throws for 40 yards.

"He is not held back," Riley said. "He has run all these plays. He was the sole guy this week to take the first-string reps. So the knowledge of everything about what we're doing, he's familiar with.

"I'm excited for him, and I think he'll do very well."

Armstrong had started 22 consecutive games for Nebraska. This season he has completed 152 of 284 passes for 2,052 yards, 16 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
