North Carolina defeated Pitt 26-19 to sit atop the ACC Coastal

North Carolina is now alone at the top of the ACC Coastal Division.

The Tar Heels defeated Pitt 26-19 to move to 4-0 in ACC play and hand the Panthers their first conference loss of the season.

UNC quarterback Marquise Williams completed 14 of 23 passes for 270 yards and two touchdowns and added another 52 yards rushing to lead the Tar Heels to their sixth consecutive win.

This North Carolina team has rebounded nicely since a season-opening loss to South Carolina and now appears in control of its chances to play in the ACC title game.

Pitt had been living on the edge in the past two weeks with game-winning field goals against Georgia Tech and Syracuse to remain undefeated in conference play. Pitt had some nice drives throughout Thursday night's game, but once the Panthers got into the red zone, the drives would stall and the panthers would have to settle for field goals.

Meanwhile, Williams eluded Pitt’s pass rush, created time with his feet and made several key throws downfield to keep plays alive or score touchdowns.

While North Carolina is in first in the division, Duke is nipping at it heels. The Blue Devils, which also are undefeated in conference play, face Miami this weekend. North Carolina will travel to Duke on Nov. 14.

Oregon wins entertaining, controversial 3OT game against Arizona State 61-55

Pac-12 After Dark made a rare appearance on Thursday night during a three-overtime bout between Arizona State and Oregon.

Oregon won 61-55 thanks to an interception in the end zone to end the third overtime, but there was a flurry of things that led to that overtime and that interception and made this contest one of the strangest and most enjoyable in quite some time.

Oregon quarterback Vernon Adams had a dazzling night showing the reasons why — when healthy — many believed he’d be able to lead the Ducks back to the Promised Land. Of course that’s not happening now (the Ducks are 5-3), but at least he had some awesome moments from this game to look back on, including this gem that got the Ducks to game-tying score to force overtime with 11 seconds remaining.

Shocking that wasn’t the first ridiculous scramble for a big play Adams had on the night. The game had a plethora of those and they were the reason Oregon was in the game in the first place.

The two teams traded touchdowns in the first two overtimes before some craziness started in the third overtime. Oregon had the ball first and Adams found Bralon Addison streaking through the end zone.

On first glance the officials called the play a touchdown. Then they went to replay…

And still called it a touchdown.

Wait, what?

Oregon, which had several curious offensive play calls all night, decided to take Adams off the field and put Addison in the backfield for the two point conversion. This was the third time offensive coordinator Scott Frost had called this particular play during the game and the first two were failures.

Of course, the third was a failure too.

All Arizona State had to do was score a touchdown and nail the two-point conversion and it would have a small chance of still being in the Pac-12 South race. But quarterback Mike Bercovici threw an interception in the end zone to give the Ducks a win and somehow get Frost off the hook for some terrible playcalling.

Sadly, this game meant very little in terms of the Pac-12 race. Both of these teams are pretty much out of their respect divisional contests, but it was a fun game to watch.

Even if some people might get fired because of its outcome.

Dana Holgorsen high-fives Trevone Boykin, calls him best player

TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin played in front of a big admirer on Thursday night. And that admirer was on the West Virginia sidelines.

After the Horned Frogs beat West Virginia 40-10, Mountaineers coach Dana Holgorsen called Boykin the best player in college football. And he also high-fived Boykin at one point during the game after the QB made a nice scramble that just carved up the West Virginia defense.

So we don't spoil the ending for you right away, here's the scramble that led to the high five.

And here's the high five.

"I could have yelled at our guys, but what was that going to do," Holgorsen said of the play. "We've competed hard against each other for four years and he made one of the best plays I've seen in a while. He was right there and I didn't know what the hell else to do."

Boykin was 32-of-47 passing for 388 yards and three touchdowns. He was also TCU's leading rusher with 11 carries for 84 yards and a score. His performance led Holgorsen to say the in his opening statements after the game.

"With all due respect to Corey Coleman two weeks ago, Trevone Boykin is the best player in college football," Holgorsen said."You can’t tackle him. He’s a phenomenal football player and I’m glad we’ll never have to see him again."

West Virginia played Baylor two weeks ago. Coleman leads college football with 18 receiving touchdowns. If he continues his pace with new quarterback Jarrett Stidham – Seth Russell is out for the season after suffering a neck injury against Iowa State – he'll be a Heisman finalist. But he'll likely be one with Boykin, who is probably LSU RB Leonard Fournette's top competition for the award.

Arkansas vs. Florida

Alabama plays LSU on the same weekend (November 5) in 2016.

The conference is involved in some marquee in and out-of-conference games to start the season too. Here are the highlights from Week 1. We do have to give the SEC credit on this one, its member teams are starting 2016 strongly.

Vanderbilt vs. South Carolina

Utah DT Seni Fauonuku performed CPR to save a man's life

Utah defensive tackle Seni Fauonuku helped save a man's life at a Salt Lake City apartment complex recently.

Fauonuku was playing video games with teammates at one of his teammates' apartments. Someone knocked on the door after they heard something outside. After the group was told of someone needing assistance in a neighboring apartment, Fauonuku sprang into action.

From the Deseret News:

“So I dropped down to my knees, starting giving him CPR,” he said. “I was doing it for probably about two minutes and like no response, nothing — the pulse was gone.”

Fauonuku, though, didn’t give up.

“I did like another two rounds of chest compressions and then all of a sudden he coughed — his eyes rolled back and the color starting coming back to his face,” he said. “And then as soon as that happened, that’s when the paramedics showed up.”

The man was in a recliner, and according to the News, had apparently overdosed.

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

Fauonuku, who has 16 tackles in 2015, has had to perform CPR in a real-life situation before. He did it on his 18-month-old nephew a "couple" of years ago. It was unfortunately unsuccessful. His nephew died.

He said he learned how to do CPR from his mother. She's a nurse.

“For as long as I can remember my mom’s been a nurse and I’ve seen her save a couple of people’s lives,” he said. “She taught me how to do all that stuff.”

If you're not certified in CPR, it doesn't take long to learn the basics. You can take a class provided by a local educational institution or government agency and become certified in a day for about $50. Like Fanuonuku learned, you never know when you may need it to save someone's life.

What to Watch, Week 9: The CFP rankings are coming! The CFP rankings are coming!

$
0
0

The College Football Playoff rankings are finally here.

At the conclusion of Week 9, the committee members will assemble and come up with the first College Football Playoff rankings of the season, which will begin several weeks of questioning, criticizing and lamenting about the slew of teams fighting for four spots of glory.

While 10 teams had games on Thursday and Friday, including some teams that should appear in the committee’s Top 25, several other key games will be played this weekend as teams begin jockeying for position.

Here’s a look at what to watch in Week 9:

Game of the week:
No. 8 Stanford at Washington State, 8:30 p.m. ET
Stanford is close to wrapping up the Pac-12 North title, but Washington State, which is arguably playing its best football ever under coach Mike Leach, might be standing in the Cardinal’s way.

Stanford has beaten its last four conference opponents by an average of 23.5 points per game. Much of that success has come because of the all-everything game of running back Christian McCaffrey, who leads the nation in all-purpose yards per game and has rushed for 953 yards and six touchdowns this season, including at least 100 yards in each of his last five contests.

And the Cardinal are going to need that offense if it wants to keep up with the Cougars, who have scored no fewer than 45 points in wins against Oregon, Oregon State and Arizona. The Cougars offense is centered around its passing game, which has had attempts of 75, 52 and 62 passes in their past three games. Quarterback Luke Falk leads the nation in attempts (387), completions (282) and completion percentage (72.9); and leads the Pac-12 in yards (2,885), yards per game (412.1) and touchdowns (26).

But the Cougars have not had a lot of success against Stanford, losing the last seven in the series. And in those games, the Stanford defense has done well keeping the Washington State offense fairly quiet. The Cardinal have allowed 15.1 points while averaging 41.7.

If Stanford were to beat the Cougars, it would have at least a three game lead in the race for the Pac-12 North title.

Game to Watch:
Georgia vs. No. 11 Florida in Jacksonville, 3:30 p.m. ET

The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party, as this rivalry between Georgia and Florida is affectionately called, would put the winner in the driver’s seat for the SEC title and a trip to the SEC championship game.

If Florida wins, it will have a two game lead on its competition with two games to play. If Georgia wins, the Bulldogs would be tied atop the division standings with the Gators and hold the head-to-head tiebreaker.

This scenario sound eerily familiar.

In 2012, Florida had a chance to secure its first SEC title game berth since 2009, but a 17-9 loss to Georgia gave the Bulldogs the division crown. A similar situation happened in 2002.

Florida is coming off a 35-28 loss to LSU, the Gators first loss of the season and their first game without quarterback Will Grier, who is serving a year-long suspension for performance enhancing drugs. Still, Florida’s passing game thrived under quarterback Treon Harris, who threw for 271 yards and two touchdowns in the loss.

He’s a far different version of the quarterback the Bulldogs saw a year ago when he threw just six passes and the Gators rushed for 418 yards.

Georgia has its own offensive concerns after losing star running back Nick Chubb to a knee injury a few weeks ago. The Bulldogs’ offense struggled in their first game without him — a 9-6 win against Missouri — and will need to find a way to generate some offense against a stingy Florida defense.

Also check out…
No. 9 Notre Dame at No. 21 Temple, 6 p.m. ET

This is the only contest between ranked teams and it might not end up being that competitive.

Temple is 7-0 and off to its best start in school history. However, it hasn’t faced an opponent as good as Notre Dame, which will truly prove whether the Owls are as good as their record suggests or a product of mediocre competition.

Notre Dame is trying to stay in the hunt for a College Football Playoff spot and a loss to Temple would knock the Irish out of contention. Notre Dame is the better team in this scenario, but it’s really going to come down to how seriously the Irish take the Owls. A couple weeks ago, Ole Miss got a two-score lead against Memphis, another American Athletic Conference team, started to relaxed and ended up being upset. Notre Dame faces a similar scenario with a Temple team that plays decent defense and has the AAC’s top rusher in Jahad Thomas.

Notre Dame will look to stretch the Temple defense with speedy wide receiver Will Fuller, who is averaging 100.3 receiving yards and has eight touchdowns, and wear down the interior of the defensive line with running back C.J. Prosise, who has a team-high 922 yards and 11 scores.

While conventional wisdom and statistics say Notre Dame should run away with this game, the AAC already has had a charmed October and this would finish the month in grand fashion.

Channel surf through…

USC at Cal, 3 ET: USC is coming off a big win against Utah while Cal has lost its last two games. There’s a bit of desperation for both teams as Cal tries to right what was an undefeated start and USC tries to be perfect in its final five games to challenge for the Pac-12 South. The offenses will be on display in this contest.

Vanderbilt at No. 18 Houston, 7 p.m. ET: As noted above, AAC member Memphis already has knocked off an SEC opponent and Houston could make it two for the conference. Vanderbilt is coming off a win against Missouri, the program’s first conference win under coach Derek Mason. Houston is one of three undefeated teams in the AAC and has rolled through most of its competition. It, along with a handful of other schools, are vying for a spot in a New Year’s Six Bowl and a win against the Commodores would go a long way toward that.

Tennessee at Kentucky, 7:30 p.m. ET: The seat of Tennessee coach Butch Jones has been getting a little warm in the past couple weeks as his team has failed to live up to high expectations this year. The Vols are 3-4 this season and a loss to rival Kentucky might just have Jones hitching a ride back from Lexington unemployed.

Report: Faton Bauta to start at QB for Georgia vs. Florida

$
0
0

Is Georgia going with its preseason No. 3 quarterback against Florida?

According to GridironNow.com, Faton Bauta will start for the Bulldogs against the Gators. Bauta began the season behind Greyson Lambert and Brice Ramsey on the Georgia depth chart.

Lambert has been Georgia's starting quarterback for the entire 2015 season. Ramsey has also gotten playing time.

Georgia coach Mark Richt said Wednesday that the first-team reps were being split in practice. After practice, tight end Jeb Blazevich had this to say via UGASports.com.

"I don't know how much I'm allowed to say, but they (coaches) are looking to put pressure on guys like that," Blazevich said. "But I'll just leave it at that. I don't want to get in trouble."

Why would Bauta start for Georgia? We'll let UGASports.com explain:

It's believed Bauta will enable Georgia to run more read option, much like Tennessee was able to do with its quarterback Joshua Dobbs, who rushed for 136 yards in the Vols' one-point loss to the Gators earlier this year.
Bauta could also allow the Bulldog to perhaps to employ more option-type runs with Sony Michel, and perhaps Isaiah McKenzie who is coming back from the hamstring injury that has caused him to miss the past four games.

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

Lambert set an NCAA record for completion percentage against South Carolina (24-25 for 330 yards and three touchdowns) in the third game of the season. Since then he hasn't been spectacular. He was 10-24 for 86 yards and an interception against Alabama and 15-32 for 279 yards and two scores against Tennessee. Both of those games were losses for Georgia.

On the season, Lambert is 100-156 for 1,276 yards and nine touchdowns and two interceptions. Ramsey is 16-26 passing for 221 yards and a touchdown and two interceptions. Bauta hasn't recorded a rush or pass attempt in 2015. He was 4-5 passing for 48 yards and had 6 carries for 16 yards in 2014.

Spread Options: Dr. Saturday's Week 9 picks against the spread

Back to .500 after a 4-6 week at 37-37-6. Blah.

Nebraska at Purdue (+7.5), Noon ET: Upset? Maybe. Ryker Fife is starting at quarterback for Nebraska after Tommy Armstrong was declared out. Nebraska is likely a much better team than its record because of all the close games its lost this year. But given the way that Nebraska's season has gone, it's impossible to predict against a close game again, especially with a backup quarterback.

South Carolina at Texas A&M (-16.5), Noon ET: This is simply a bounceback pick. Texas A&M is one frustrated football team at the moment and South Carolina is a good opportunity to release those frustrations. If the A&M offense can't get back on track against the Gamecock defense, it's not going to get in sync against anyone.

Ole Miss (-7) at Auburn, Noon ET: The Tigers are playing better, even if Will Muschamp's defense isn't exactly stellar this year. But if Auburn wants to win this game, Sean White has to throw a touchdown. He has no passing touchdowns in his four starts this season. He may get one, but we like the Ole Miss defense here. Ole Miss is much better than Arkansas is.

UCF at Cincinnati (-27.5), Noon ET: We're going to simply keep picking against UCF until the Knights are competitive. We're not sure that this will be the day that UCF is competitive. The Cincinnati offense can be explosive and UCF has given up less than 30 points twice in 2015. Those games were against Florida International and Furman. Yikes.

Virginia Tech (-2.5) at Boston College, 12:30 p.m. ET: This has the lowest over/under of the weekend (38). And with good reason. The Eagles once again proved that they're a team with endless defense and no offense against Louisville, which is why we like Virginia Tech to win by a field goal or more here. This game will also probably hit the under too.

Clemson (-10) at North Carolina State, 3:30 p.m. ET: The Wolfpack are breaking out the special uniforms for this one. It won't be enough. Clemson has shed the Clemsoning label and while this can be a trap game as the Tigers look ahead to Florida State next week, we're confident it won't happen. DeShaun Watson is the best player on the field and it's not even close.

Oklahoma at Kansas (+39.5), 3:30 p.m. ET: Week 9 isn't a very fun week. And we're picking this game not because the week is terrible, but because it's time to be nice to Kansas. If Oklahoma jumps out to to a big lead in the first half, we envision the Sooners letting up in the second half. Or maybe Kansas will keep it (relatively) close throughout the entire game.

Michigan at Minnesota (+13), 7 p.m. ET: This one is for retired Minnesota coach Jerry Kill. The Gophers may not pull off the upset, but the ingredients are there for a close game. Tracy Claeys performed well as the interim coach in 2013 and should have Minnesota well-prepared for the fighting Harbaughs. The over/under (38.5) on this game seems about perfect. Something like 23-17 sounds right.

Texas at Iowa State (+5.5), 7 p.m. ET: Upset special of the week. Every year it seems that Iowa State gives someone a major scare or pulls off a big upset. This is that game. The Cyclone defense played well against Baylor on Saturday and forced the Bears into the most punts of the season. As you know, Baylor's offense is a bit more powerful than Texas'. It may be ugly, but the Cyclones get the win.

Tennessee at Kentucky (+9): The Vols are having to stay in Cincinnati Friday night. We're not picking Kentucky on the strength of that, however. Tennessee can be a maddeningly inconsistent team; even within the same game. And both of these teams have a propensity for close games. Until last week, all of Kentucky's games had been decided by eight points or less. The only two Tennessee games that haven't been within seven points are wins against Bowling Green and Western Carolina.

NOT-SO-LOCKS OF THE WEEK

Nick Bromberg (3-5): Georgia at Florida (-2), 3:30 p.m. ET: This pick comes on the heels of the report that third-string QB Faton Bauta will be starting for Georgia. Bauta is more a of a running threat than Greyson Lambert and Brice Ramsey, so the Georgia hope is that he'll give Florida's defense fits. I'm not so sure about that. Florida essentially clinches the SEC East in Jacksonville.

Sam Cooper (2-6): Illinois at Penn State (-4), Noon ET: Neither of these teams is very good (neither are my picks), but Penn State has a clear edge with its defense – especially at home. Illinois will be without starting running back Josh Ferguson for a third straight week, which will force the Illini and Wes Lunt to throw early and often. Penn State’s heavy pass rush will be the difference here in a messy, low-scoring game.

Graham Watson (1-6-1): Rutgers (+20) at Wisconsin, Noon ET: There are two reasons why I like this line: 1) Rutgers is not this bad; 2) Wisconsin doesn’t blow out conference opponents. Wisconsin’s biggest margin of victory against a conference foe this year was 17 points against Purdue and I think Rutgers is a bit better than Purdue. Rutgers won’t win this game, but it will keep it closer than three touchdowns.

Athlon Sports' scariest players in college football

$
0
0

College football’s Week 9 Saturday slate just happens to fall on Halloween this year. Strange plays, weird outcomes and nightmares for coaching staffs are normal on any weekend during the year, but things may get a little strange on Oct. 31.

With the Halloween theme in mind, Athlon Sports has picked the 10 scariest players in college football this season. To most fans, goblins, zombies, Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, witches and skeletons cause sleepless nights or nightmares around Oct. 31. But what about coaching staffs preparing for a game? Here are the 10 player scariest players for any coaching staff to go against on a Saturday of action during the college football season.

Joey Bosa, DE, Ohio State

Bosa’s 2015 stats aren’t up to last year’s level. However, opposing offenses are frightened about Bosa’s presence off the edge, leading to frequent double teams and running plays to the other side of the field. Even if Bosa doesn’t reach double-digit sacks (just 3.5 in 2015), the junior still ranks as one of the scariest edge rushers for any offense to gameplan for this season.

Related: Predictions for Every Week 9 Game

Trevone Boykin, QB, TCU

With the recent rise in offensive production and up-tempo attacks across the nation, defensive coordinators easily have the toughest job in college football. Big 12 defensive signal-callers have plenty of experience in slowing down high-powered offenses, but Boykin is on another level. The senior quarterback can slice through a secondary (2,927 yards and 28 scores) or gash the defense on the ground (524 yards and six touchdowns). How do you stop Boykin? That’s the big question the defensive staffs of TCU’s opponents have in the many sleepless nights of game preparation.

Shilique Calhoun, DE, Michigan State

Calhoun’s nickname is “Bane.” Need we say more? At 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds, Calhoun certainly has an impressive physical presence similar to Batman’s nemesis in the Dark Knight Rises. The senior has 112 tackles (39.5 tackles for a loss), 24.5 sacks and three forced fumbles in his career with the Spartans.

Related: Ranking the Watchability of Every Week 9 Game

Corey Coleman, WR, Baylor/LaQuan McGowan, TE, Baylor

Baylor’s receiving corps is the best in college football. Coleman headlines this group (20.5 yards per catch) and is on pace (18 receiving touchdowns so far) to set the single-season touchdown record. But Coleman isn’t the only scary player in this unit. How about 410-pound tight end LaQuan McGowan? The senior isn’t out there just for his blocking, as the Texas native has one catch for 18 yards this year. For a 410-pound tight end/converted offensive lineman, McGowan has nimble feet and is not an ideal matchup for any defensive back trying to make a tackle.

Dalvin Cook, RB, Florida State

Cook won’t play in Week 9 due to an ankle injury suffered against Georgia Tech, but the minor ailment shouldn’t put a damper on his season. The sophomore has 1,037 rushing yards and 11 scores, while catching 15 passes for 181 yards in seven games. LSU’s Leonard Fournette and Alabama’s Derrick Henry certainly have the edge in physical presence, but Cook has outstanding speed and elusiveness in the open field. He’s averaging 8.2 yards per carry and has three runs of 60 yards or more this season.

Related: 10 Coaching Candidates to Replace Jerry Kill at Minnesota

Leonard Fournette, RB, LSU

As LSU’s matchup against Auburn showed this year, tackling Fournette is a risky proposition for any defender. At 6-foot-1, 230 pounds, the thought of Fournette in the open field with a crazy blend of speed and power is a scary picture for any defensive player. The New Orleans native is the frontrunner to win the Heisman Trophy after Week 8 and has 1,352 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns on 176 carries.

Myles Garrett, DE, Texas A&M

Garrett is arguably the nation’s best defensive player and a matchup nightmare for opposing offensive linemen, coaching staffs and quarterbacks. Sleepless nights are likely the norm when preparing for Garrett, as he has 37 tackles (13.5 for a loss), 8.5 sacks, one interception and four forced fumbles this season.

Derrick Henry, RB, Alabama

Similar to LSU’s Leonard Fournette, the thought of Henry in the open field with a full head of steam is downright terrifying. After all, Henry is 6-foot-3 and 242 pounds with excellent speed and strength. Through eight games in 2015, the Florida native has rushed for 1,044 yards and 14 scores.

Robert Nkemdiche, DT, Ole Miss

All signs point to Nkemdiche as a first-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, but until he departs for the next level, the junior will continue to wreak havoc on opposing offensive lines. Nkemdiche’s numbers aren’t huge – 17 tackles (5.5 for a loss) and 1.5 sacks this season – but that’s largely due to the focus of the offensive lines preventing the junior from dominating on the interior. He’s also used sparingly on offense, rushing for two touchdowns on four attempts and catching one pass for 31 yards and a score in 2015.

Shawn Oakman, DE, Baylor

At 6-foot-9 and 275 pounds, Oakman is truly a physical specimen and a one-of-the-kind presence off the edge. Oakman has terrorized plenty of linemen and quarterbacks for Baylor, recording 17 sacks and over 40 tackles for a loss in the last three seasons. Oakman’s impressive physique resulted in a series of memes following last year’s Cotton Bowl appearance against Michigan State.

Pat Haden leaves College Football Playoff committee

USC athletic director Pat Haden is vacating his post on the College Football Playoff committee.

The Playoff announced the decision on Friday.

“I am reluctant to step down, but my doctors advised me to reduce my traveling,” Haden said in a CFP statement. “With the weekly CFP meetings about to start and the travel commitment involved, I had to make this difficult decision. I feel it is in the best interest of the CFP and also of USC, with our current football coaching change and our upcoming Coliseum renovation.

“It was an honor to serve on the College Football Playoff Selection Committee. I have such high regard for the CFP process and for the committee members, who devote such time and energy to the great sport of college football. It was a pleasure to serve alongside them. I want to thank the committee members, as well as CFP executive director Bill Hancock and his staff. They all do wonderful work.”

Haden had become lightheaded during the team's trip to Notre Dame two weeks ago. Haden, 62, had to go to a knee and was escorted off the field by medical officials. He later flew home with the team.

His departure leaves the committee with 12 members. The Playoff said it will not immediately replace Haden and operate with 12 for the rest of the season. The first ranking for the CFP are set to be released Tuesday.

The Los Angeles Times detailed Haden's multiple responsibilities outside of being USC's athletic director in a piece earlier this month.

But he also juggles extensive obligations outside USC as a member of more than a dozen corporate and nonprofit boards, side work that pays him at least a half-million dollars a year (including stock options and share awards), a Times review of proxy statements and federal tax records has found.

He's also about to embark on a coaching search, assuming he doesn't keep interim coach Clay Helton in the permanent role. USC fired coach Steve Sarkisian after Haden said the school found out that Sarkisian had not followed the guidelines agreed upon after an alcohol-and-medication-fueled rant at an August booster function.

Sarkisian was previously granted a leave of absence before he was fired and went to seek treatment.

Haden's involvement with the committee was also not without (an overblown) controversy. During a game last year against Stanford, Haden went down to the sidelines to confront officials. He said he had been summoned to the sideline by Sarkisian. Haden was subsequently reprimanded and fined by the Pac-12.

Haden was one of five athletic directors on the 13-person committee. His departure leaves chairman Jeff Long (Arkansas), Barry Alvarez (Wisconsin), Kirby Hocutt (Texas Tech), and Dan Radakovich (Clemson) as the athletic directors still on the panel.

Additionally, it's the second time the committee has been reduced to 12 during the season. Archie Manning took a leave of absence in October 2014 and was replaced by Bobby Johnson this spring.

Freshman Kyler Murray to start at QB for Texas A&M

(Photo by Scott Halleran/Getty Images)Kyler Murray will start at quarterback for Texas A&M when it hosts South Carolina on Saturday, the program announced.

Murray, a much-heralded true freshman, will replace sophomore Kyle Allen, who started the first seven games of the season for the Aggies, but has struggled mightily in recent weeks. A&M started the season 5-0, but dropped its last two games by double-digits to Alabama and Ole Miss at home. In those starts, Allen was a combined 32-of-74 (43 percent) for 351 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions.

Murray has appeared in five games this season. Overall, he’s 17-of-31 throwing for 167 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He’s also gained 92 yards rushing on 18 attempts.

When Allen was pulled during last weekend’s 23-3 loss to Ole Miss, Aggies head coach opted for Jake Hubenak, a junior college transfer, instead of Murray, who reportedly had a verbal sideline altercation with offensive coordinator Jake Spavital during the Alabama game.

However, heading into this week of practice, Sumlin decided to completely open up the quarterback competition, resulting in the selection of Murray as starter against the 3-4 Gamecocks.

Murray was a Rivals four-star recruit and rated as the No. 71 overall prospect in the 2015 recruiting class. During his career at Allen High in Allen, Texas, Murray compiled a 43-0 record and three state titles. He also earned the Gatorade national high school athlete of the year in 2015.

Dental student from recent tryout to serve as Florida's backup kicker

Florida’s backup kicker wasn’t even on the roster two weeks ago.

Neil MacInnes was one of 216 people who tried out for a roster spot on Oct. 21 after No. 2 kicker Jorge Powell went down with a season-ending knee injury against LSU on Oct. 17. And on Saturday, MacInnes will be with the Gators for a crucial SEC East game against Georgia in Athens.

"It’s pretty much a dream come true," MacInnes told GatorZone.com. “I wanted to kick in high school and obviously being part of this organization, and Gator Nation, is kind of cool.”

MacInnes, a 6-foot-4, 219-pound senior who is studying to be a dentist, was a kicker as a high school junior and senior at Chamberlain High School in Tampa. He hasn’t kicked in a game since December 2011, when he nailed two field goals (43 and 48 yards) in a high school all-star game. He also was a standout in soccer and track and field in high school.

MacInnes was practicing with the team three days after his tryout and learned that he’d travel with the team to Athens on Friday as the backup behind Austin Hardin. He said he’s still adjusting to his new gig.

From GatorZone:

MacInnes said his body continues to adjust to restarting a kicking routine. The first couple of days his muscles ached.

At the initial tryout, MacInnis started by booting three kickoffs. He then to attempted three field goals.

That’s when (special teams coach Greg) Nord stepped in to provide a tip. He told MacInnes to lean the ball forward more on his attempts.

“It was a much better ball,’’ MacInnes said. “My mindset going into it was, ‘if I was in high school, and they were recruiting me right now, like do any of these other guys have the potential to do it? Would they have had the potential to do it in high school?’ I felt like I did.”

The No. 11 Gators (6-1, 4-1) and Bulldogs (5-2, 3-2) kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.

(Photo by William Mancebo/Getty Images)Oregon State will be without its starting quarterback against No. 13 Utah on Saturday.

According to The Oregonian, Seth Collins suffered a knee while stretching before the team’s practice on Friday morning. He was originally expected to be a game-time decision, but ended up not making the trip to Salt Lake City.

Collins, a true freshman, has started all seven games for the 2-5 Beavers and has thrown for 890 yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions while completing just 51.9 percent of his passes. He also has 536 yards and five more scores rushing this season.

Collins split time with redshirt freshman Nick Mitchell against Colorado last weekend. With Collins out, Mitchell, who completed 9-of-24 passes for 122 yards and an interception against Colorado, will likely get the start.

Marcus McMaryion, another redshirt freshman, is third on the depth chart at quarterback for OSU. He has appeared in three games this season, completing six-of-17 passes for 60 yards and an interception.

The Northwestern football team certainly has Halloween spirit.

The Wildcats have a bye this week, so the team had fun with its Friday practice with many of its players dressing up in Halloween costumes.

Costumes included Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers, Spiderman, Batman and starting quarterback Clayton Thorson as a hot dog.

Northwestern, now 6-2, rebounded from back-to-back losses to Michigan and Iowa by knocking off Nebraska on the road last weekend. The Wildcats’ next game is a home matchup against Penn State on Nov. 7.

Ohio State QB J.T. Barrett suspended for Minnesota game after OVI

Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett has been suspended for the Buckeyes' game against Minnesota on Nov. 7 after he was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated early Saturday morning.

The Buckeyes are off this weekend. The school announced his suspension after 9 a.m. ET Saturday.

Ohio State University student-athlete J.T. Barrett was cited by Columbus police Saturday morning at a campus area check point with a misdemeanor offense of OVI. Barrett has been suspended by head coach Urban Meyer from playing in Ohio State’s game against Minnesota on Nov. 7.

Barrett's absence means that Cardale Jones will resume being Ohio State's starting quarterback. Jones, who replaced Barrett after Barrett broke his ankle against Michigan in 2014, started the season as the Buckeyes' QB. Barrett saw some playing time and after he was more effective than Jones, especially in the red zone, he was named the starter for Ohio State's game against Rutgers.

According to ElevenWarriors.com, Barrett blew slightly over the legal limit of 0.08 when he was stopped at the checkpoint. He was given a ride home by Jones.

The site also notes that Barrett could be subject to a two-week suspension as part of Ohio State's athlete code of conduct since it's an alcohol-related offense and he's underage. If the suspension were to start immediately, he would only miss the Minnesota game.

Barrett is 41-of-62 passing for 472 yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions this season. He also has 42 carries for 329 yards rushing and he's Ohio State's second-leading rusher behind Ezekiel Elliott.

Jones is 96-of-152 passing for 1,266 yards, seven touchdowns and five interceptions. He chose to stay in school after leading Ohio State to the College Football Playoff title instead of heading to the NFL draft where he could have been a high-round pick because of his size and arm strength.

The two quarterbacks competed to be the starter through the summer and fall after Braxton Miller, who missed the 2014 season because of a shoulder injury, announced he would swich to H-back. Miller is Ohio State's third-leading rusher and receiver. The Buckeyes, 8-0, are widely expected to be in the top four, if not at No. 1, when the College Football Playoff committee releases its first set of rankings on Tuesday.

(AP Photo/Mark Wallheiser)Florida State will be without starting quarterback Everett Golson for Saturday’s game against Syracuse.

The school announced Saturday morning that Golson is dealing with concussion symptoms, so redshirt junior Sean Maguire will get his second career start for the Seminoles.

Maguire started against Clemson last year while Jameis Winston served a one-game suspension and threw for 304 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Maguire has also made appearances in two games this season against Texas State and Louisville, combining for 73 yards and a touchdown while completing 7-of-8 passes.

Maguire was the expected starter for FSU coming out of spring practice until Golson, a graduate transfer from Notre Dame, joined the program.

Golson has been mostly good for the Seminoles this season, throwing for 1,659 yards and 11 touchdowns. He threw his first interception of the season last weekend when the Seminoles lost their first game of the season at Georgia Tech.

In addition to Golson, starting running back Dalvin Cook is also out against the Orange due to an ankle injury.

The Seminoles (6-1, 4-1 ACC) kick off at noon against the Orange (3-4, 1-2 ACC).

Auburn QB Sean White a game-time decision against Ole Miss

Auburn quarterback Sean White is still recovering from an injury he suffered against Arkansas last week and might not start Saturday’s game against Ole Miss.

The decision will be made prior to kickoff.

If White can’t go, former starter Jeremy Johnson will step in.

White suffered a big hit against Arkansas that caused him to get up slowly, but he did finish the four-overtime loss.

White has started the last four games and has completed 62 of 97 passes for 805 yards with an interception.

Johnson, who started the three games prior to that, has completed 43 of 72 passes for 473 yards, five touchdowns and six interceptions. He has played sparingly since being pulled as the team’s starter.

Rutgers WR Leonte Carroo out vs. Wisconsin

(Photo by Elsa/Getty Images)Rutgers wide receiver Leonte Carroo will not play in Saturday’s game at Wisconsin.

The program announced the news about an hour prior to the noon kick time.

According to the Asbury Park Press, Carroo has been dealing with an ankle injury and did not practice all week or take part in pregame warm-ups on Saturday morning.

Carroo started for the Scarlet Knights last week against Ohio State, but was unable to continue in the second half due to the ankle issue, which occurred during the the game against Indiana on Oct. 17.

The senior has played in only five games this season due to a suspension after being accused of domestic assault. The charges were later dropped and he returned on Oct. 10 against Michigan State after missing games against Penn State and Kansas.

Despite missing those games, Carroo leads the Big Ten with nine touchdown catches. Overall, he has 24 catches for 527 yards – good for a 22 yards per catch average.

Without Carroo the Scarlet Knights (3-4, 1-3) face an even tougher challenge at Camp Randall against a Wisconsin (6-2, 3-1) team that has won three straight games.

Hugh Freeze awkwardly Whips on sidelines following interception (GIF)

It's time to watch Hugh Freeze Whip.

The Ole Miss coach became the latest college football coach to publicly do "The Whip" on Saturday. Freeze did the dance with Tony Bridges after Bridges had intercepted Auburn quarterback Sean White in the first quarter.

Kind of awkward, isn't it?

Freeze joins the ranks of legendary whipping coaches like Clemson's Dabo Swinney and Arizona's Rich Rodriguez.

Here's Swinney:

And here's RichRod.

Hopefully Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh is next. Maybe he'll have a whip-off with Nick Saban. And then college football will explode.
