Minnesota CB Jalen Myrick likely out for season

(Photo by Doug Pensinger/Getty Images)Minnesota cornerback Jalen Myrick’s season is likely over.

According to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Myrick suffered rib and lung injuries in Saturday’s loss at Ohio State and remained hospitalized in Columbus, Ohio, until Tuesday morning. Gophers interim head coach Tracy Claeys told reporters that Myrick will not recover in time for any of the team’s final three regular season games against Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin.

“I was told three to four weeks and he should be back to OK as far as his lung and that goes,” Claeys said. “By all likelihood, he’ll be done for the rest of the season.”

Myrick leads Minnesota with three interceptions this season and has been a starter at outside corner. The junior totaled 26 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss in nine games this season. He was also valuable as a kick returner with a 21.4 average.

Myrick is the third defensive back to suffer a serious injury for the Gophers this season. Safety Damarius Travis has missed the majority of the season with a hamstring injury while corner Craig James suffered a broken leg against Northwestern on Oct. 3.

The Gophers, who dropped to 4-5 with the loss to Ohio State, have another challenge with a road matchup with No. 5 Iowa coming on Saturday.

NC State reinstates starting OL Will Richardson after suspension

(Photo by Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)The suspension of N.C. State offensive lineman Will Richardson only lasted one week.

After Richardson was arrested on Nov. 1 for DWI, Wolfpack head coach Dave Doeren announced an indefinite suspension for the redshirt freshman. Richardson sat out Saturday’s win over Boston College and Doeren subsequently announced Monday that Richardson had been reinstated.

Richardson started the first eight games of the season at right tackle. According to the News & Observer, Doeren told reporters Monday that Richardson has to “earn his right back on the field” and will compete with redshirt freshman Tyler Jones this week in practice. With Richardson out, Jones started against the Eagles.

Richardson, 19, has a court date scheduled for Jan. 19.

The Wolfpack improved to 6-3 on the season with their win over Boston College. Next on the schedule is a road game at No. 16 Florida State this weekend.

Oh, #MACtion: Ref tells Central Michigan cheerleaders not to distract Toledo

$
0
0

The beauty of #MACtion is that you’ll probably see something you’ve never seen on a football field before. Take Tuesday night’s Toledo-Central Michigan game for example.

Leading 21-17 in the second half, Toledo drove deep into CMU territory looking to add on to its lead. And with the Rockets inside the 10-yard line, the head referee briefly halted play and made a rather strange announcement.

Take a listen:

Yes, he asked for Central Michigan’s cheerleaders, who were standing behind the end zone, not to make noise in their own stadium so they didn’t disrupt the opposing team’s snap count.

Isn’t it part of a cheerleader’s job to encourage the crowd to get loud? That’s a weird one for sure.

Even with its cheerleaders muzzled by the ref, CMU managed to escape without allowing any points on that drive when Toledo kicker Jameson Vest missed a 21-yard attempt.

Toledo was able to add to its lead in the fourth quarter, but the Chippewas didn’t go away quietly. CMU cut the lead to 28-23 with 3:26 to go and then attempted an onside kick to try to get the ball back. It didn’t go well.

Toledo gained possession after the failed onside attempt and was able to run out the clock for a 28-23 victory. The Rockets improved to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in MAC play with the win.

The MAC’s West division is crowded, so it was an important win for Toledo – especially after it dropped out of the College Football Playoff rankings following its first loss of the season to Northern Illinois last week. Western Michigan (6-3, 5-0 MAC) and NIU (6-3, 4-1 MAC) are also both firmly in contention in the division.

CMU (now 5-5, 4-2 MAC) was also in the mix headed into Tuesday night’s game, but fell behind those three with the loss.

Minnesota names interim Tracy Claeys its permanent head coach

Minnesota has removed the interim label from Tracy Claeys and named him the new head coach of the Golden Gophers.

Claeys, the team’s former defensive coordinator, takes over for Jerry Kill, who resigned on Oct. 28 because of health reasons. Claeys had served on Kill’s staff for 21 years and five different programs.

He signed a three-year contract that will begin in February and run through the 2018 season. He’ll make $1.4 million next year with $100,000 raises in each of the next two seasons.

"The circumstances of the past few weeks have been unpredictable," Claeys said in a statement. "This certainly is not the way anyone wants to become a head coach. Coach Kill is one of my best friends and I am thankful that he took a chance on me 21 years ago"

Kill has coached the Gophers against No. 15 Michigan and No. 1 Ohio State and both games have resulted in close losses for the Gophers. Overall, he’s 4-5 as an interim head coach after coaching seven games in 2013 while Kill was on a medical hiatus.

The Gophers are currently 4-5 and finish the regular season with games against Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin.

Kansas QB Montell Cozart to have season-ending shoulder surgery

$

0

Kansas quarterback Montell Cozart will have surgery on the shoulder he injured last month and miss the rest of the season.

Cozart, who was the Jayhawks starting quarterback at the beginning of the season, suffered what coach David Beaty called a “shoulder strain” in the loss to Iowa State on Oct. 3. He hasn’t played since.

Ryan Willis, who has been nursing a sore groin, will start against TCU this weekend.

Cozart is the third quarterback lost for the Jayhawks this season. Senior Michael Cummings tore his ACL during the spring game and Deondre Ford suffered a season-ending thumb injury in the loss to Rutgers.

Willis injured both groins during Saturday’s 59-20 loss at Texas.

After Willis, the quarterbacking roster gets a little thin. Redshirt freshman Keaton Perry and junior T.J. Millweard are the potential backups.

Cozart had played in four games this season and Beaty said Tuesday he was hopeful that a medical hardship waiver request to the NCAA would allow Cozart to come back for another year of eligibility.

Tempe councilman files claim against Arizona State for mascot incident

Tempe, Ariz., Councilman David Schapira has filed a Notice of Claim against the Arizona State University after mascot Sparky reinjured his surgically repaired back.

Schapira was standing on the sidelines during the “City of Tempe night” halftime ceremonies of the Sept. 18 game against New Mexico.

“A moment after he landed squarely on my back, I felt a pop in my lower back,” Schapira wrote in his claim. “I tried to push Sparky off as my wife and others yelled to him to get off, but I needed the assistance of another Council Member, Joel Navarro, to get him off my back.”

According to the claim, Schapira staggered to a nearby fence and asked a security guard for a chair. The request was denied.

"I then sat down and eventually laid down on the ground as I could feel muscles in my back start to spasm,” wrote Schapira.

Schapira was transported by ambulance where he stayed for four days. He missed 10 total days of work. According to Schapira’s claim, doctors told him his severe muscle tear would take up to six months to fully heal.

Schapira is seeking $96,146 in total damages for himself and an additional $27,000 to reimburse the City of Tempe for what it has been billed as a result of the incident.

“ASU sincerely apologizes for the incident at the Sept. 18 game,” an Arizona State spokesman told the Arizona Republic via email. “We have offered our fullest assistance and cooperation in getting the Councilman’s bills paid, and we wish him a speedy recovery.”

Restaurant's Virginia Tech graveyard restored after damage (Photo)

$

The Souvlaki restaurant in Blacksburg, Virginia, has a new graveyard for Virginia Tech football.

No, nothing affiliated with the football team is actually buried there. The restaurant has displayed a graveyard in the front window that's had headstones for each of Virginia Tech's opponents for the season. When Tech beats a team, the grave is filled in.

But the old graveyard was broken when a student fell into the window earlier this year per the Roanoke Times. It's now been replaced with a steel version designed by former Virginia Tech running back Kevin Jones, who has a design firm in Blacksburg.

A graveyard has reportedly been in the front window of the Souvlaki restaurant building since the 1980s.

From the Roanoke Times:

When Jones and Barrette were contacted by Buchanan, they were thrilled to be part of recreating something that was “so ingrained in the town,” Jones said.

“It’s almost like commentating on the game or writing a column, but people don’t really see it as that,” Jones said about the graveyard. “It’s another form or reporting, and I think that’s the really cool part of it.”

The graveyard cost restaurant owner Mike Buchanan over $1,000, and it weighs over 100 pounds. It was installed before Virginia Tech's win over Boston College.

The news of the new graveyard now has us wondering if there needs to be a graveyard-themed rivalry trophy between Clemson and Virginia Tech. Yeah, the two are in different ACC divisions and don't play each other every year, but given that Clemson has its own graveyard it could be fun. Especially if the game is played near Halloween. Let's make it happen.

Athlon Sports' coordinators who could be on the hot seat

$
0
0

College football’s offseason coaching carousel is already shaping up to be one of the busiest in recent years. Nine FBS coaching jobs are open as of Nov. 11, and the turnover won’t stop at the top. With several openings at the head coach level, the turnover and changes will continue into the assistant ranks. Coordinator changes should be active this offseason in every conference, and the pressure is already starting to build on a handful of play-callers.

Reports have already surfaced about job security for Texas A&M offensive coordinator Jake Spavital, as the Aggies have slumped on offense in recent weeks. Additionally, Georgia’s Brian Schottenheimer is under scrutiny after the Bulldogs scored 12 combined points in games against Missouri and Florida.

Here are five coordinators on the hot seat with four weeks left in the 2015 season:

Brian Knorr, Defensive Coordinator, Indiana

Defense has been a longstanding issue for the Hoosiers. Since 2008, Indiana has ranked 10th or worse in the Big Ten in yards per play and points allowed. Just how much of a struggle has defense been for the Hoosiers recently? In 2013, Indiana gave up 41.9 points per game (Big Ten-only matchups) in 2013 and surrendered 7.4 yards per play. Regardless of how explosive Indiana’s offense is, reaching bowl eligibility in the Big Ten East is almost impossible with those numbers allowed on defense. Knorr joined Kevin Wilson’s staff in 2014 and you have to look hard to find improvement. The Hoosiers are giving up 6.6 yards per play and 41 points in league matchups this season. Additionally, this unit has been susceptible to the big play. Indiana has allowed 14 plays of 40 yards or more and 11 of 50 yards or more.

Related: College Football's Post-Week 10 Bowl Projections

Don Pellum, Defensive Coordinator, Oregon

Pellum inherited big shoes to fill when he was promoted to defensive coordinator prior to the 2014 season. The long-time assistant replaced Nick Aliotti after he retired following the 2013 campaign and has experienced his share of ups and downs in his first opportunity to call the defensive signals at Oregon. The statistical totals of the Ducks’ defense are always skewed due to their up-tempo, high-powered offense, and Pellum’s group held opponents to a respectable 5.5 yards per play in 2014. However, there were signs of trouble, as Oregon ranked 12th in the Pac-12 in third-down defense and relied on takeaways (34) to stem the offensive momentum of other teams. The Ducks lost a handful of key players from last year’s unit and have struggled so far in 2015. Oregon ranks last in the Pac-12 in points allowed (37.2 per game), yards per play (6.1) and ninth in red-zone defense. Considering the track record of continuity in Eugene and turnover in personnel this season, Pellum is likely to call the defensive signals once again in 2016. However, this defense has to show improvement next year, especially as the offense looks for a replacement for Vernon Adams at quarterback.

Brian Schottenheimer, Offensive Coordinator, Georgia

Schottenheimer’s arrival was met with plenty of skepticism last January. So far, the first-year coordinator has done little to ease those concerns. The Bulldogs rank eighth in the SEC in scoring offense and averaged less than five yards per play in three out of their last five conference matchups. This unit has struggled to produce big plays, recording only eight plays of 40 yards or more through nine contests. The loss of star running back Nick Chubb was a huge setback to Georgia’s offense, but inconsistency at quarterback and a lack of proven receivers limited the explosiveness and production of this group. The Bulldogs have only one touchdown pass and tossed five picks in their last three games. While Schottenheimer didn’t inherit the SEC’s best offense and lost this team’s best player (Chubb), it’s fair to wonder if he’s the right hire for 2016 and beyond in Athens.

Related: How Arkansas and Clemson Changed the 2015 College Football Season

John Shoop, Offensive Coordinator, Purdue

Third-year coach Darrell Hazell is only 6-27 in three years at Purdue, but he’s expected to return in 2016. Hazell inherited a rebuilding project when he was hired in 2013 and progress has been hard to come by the last three seasons. Assuming Hazell returns, would he be forced to make staff changes? Shoop has a wealth of experience as a coordinator, including 2007-11 at North Carolina and in the NFL with the Bears from 2001-03. However, the Boilermakers’ offense has struggled under his watch, averaging only 22 points in Big Ten games this season. Purdue is also averaging 4.8 yards per play in 2015 and finished with a 4.6 mark in 2013 and a 4.95 total in 2014. Some perspective is needed on Shoop’s job, as the Boilermakers are rebuilding and this staff didn’t inherit a ton of proven talent. However, in a win-now mentality, Hazell may have to reconsider his offensive staff before a make-or-break 2016 campaign.

Related: Outrageous College Football Predictions for Week 11

Jake Spavital, Offensive Coordinator, Texas A&M

Spavital was considered a rising star when he was hired at Texas A&M in 2013. The Oklahoma native was hired by Kevin Sumlin to tutor the quarterbacks after two years working under Dana Holgorsen at West Virginia (2011-12). Spavital spent 2013 as a co-offensive coordinator and was promoted to play-caller prior to the Chick-fil-A Bowl against Duke. In Spavital’s debut, the Aggies averaged 7.96 yards per play and scored 52 points in the 52-48 win over Duke. Spavital’s job was tougher in 2014 with the departure of Johnny Manziel, receiver Mike Evans and standout tackle Jake Matthews to the NFL. However, Texas A&M averaged only 5.3 yards per play in league games last season and finished 10th in the SEC in red zone offense (conference-only matchups). This year has been much of the same for Spavital, as the Aggies average just 21.5 points and 5.3 yards per play in league games. Both of those totals are the lowest mark under Sumlin’s watch. Considering the skill talent in College Station, along with two talented quarterbacks (Kyler Murray and Kyle Allen), Texas A&M should have one of the SEC’s best offenses. Spavital needs to find a way to get this offense back on track in November.

Heisman Watch: Baylor's Corey Coleman stands out in jumbled race

$
0
0

The college football season is through Week 10 and we have more than enough data to discuss the contenders in the Heisman race.

Every week, Dr. Saturday will name its five Heisman favorites in order with our frontrunner on top. As we've seen thus far, the list can change pretty quickly depending on the week.

It doesn’t matter who Corey Coleman’s quarterback is, the star receiver continues to impress week after week. Coleman made first-time starter Jarrett Stidham look pretty fantastic against Kansas State last week by hauling in 11 receptions for 216 yards — both season highs — and two touchdowns.

Coleman is averaging 20.3 yards per reception thanks to speed that he turns on when he gets into the open field.

Overall, Coleman has 58 receptions for 1,178 yards and 20 touchdowns through eight games this season, but he’ll face a tough test this week against an Oklahoma team that’s also in the hunt for the Big 12 title.

The best way to describe Henry’s running style is “bulldozer.” He has no fear in running over opposing defensive lines and linebackers on his way to extra yards and touchdowns.

Against LSU, in what was supposed to be Alabama’s toughest game of the season, Henry carried the ball 38 times for 21o yards and three touchdowns. It was his second 200-yard game of the season and his third with three touchdowns. Overall, he has 1,254 yards rushing and 17 scores.

Henry’s a newcomer to this list, but in the last three games he’s racked up 589 rushing yards and seven touchdowns to put himself in the conversation.

Stanford has officially launched a Christian McCaffrey Heisman campaign and it’s about time. The sophomore back has been putting up terrific numbers all season, but because of the perceived “East Coast bias,” he might not be getting the Heisman love he deserves.

McCaffrey leads the nation with 2,174 all-purpose yards and recently passed Tony Dorsett (1976), Marcus Allen (1981), and Mark Ingram (2009) on the single-season all-purpose yardage list. All of those players won the Heisman in the years of their achievement.

McCaffrey has a shot at breaking Barry Sanders' national record of 3,250 all-purpose yards if the Cardinal qualify for the Pac-12 championship and play 14 contests.

Ezekiel Elliott’s Heisman push is based simply on consistency.

As the Ohio State offense has struggled at times to get its footing, Elliott has been the sure thing the Buckeyes have needed to continue their undefeated streak.

He has had 14 consecutive 100-yard games dating back to last year, including 114 yards and a score in last week’s close win against Minnesota. Elliott has scored in all but one contest this season, but he’s going to need some really big games moving forward if he wants to make a serious run for the trophy.

The Buckeyes don’t have a strong schedule, so Elliott is going to need to start putting up stellar performances against the top rushing defenses he has left, Illinois (34th in run defense), Michigan State (24th) and Michigan (3rd) to close the season.

Yes, Leonard Fournette took a mighty tumble this week, but we all knew his Heisman chances hinged on his play against Alabama's top-ranked rushing defense. In the end, Fournette managed a measly 19 carries for 31 yards and a score.

Fournette still leads the country in rushing with 1,383 yards and 16 touchdowns, but a lot of those numbers have come against weak competition, which somewhat taints Fournette’s achievement compared to the play of others on the list.

That said, he’s not out of the race yet. He’s still one of the Heisman favorites in Vegas, but he’s going to need tremendous efforts against Arkansas (28th in rushing defense), Ole Miss (33rd) and Texas A&M (114th), the remaining teams on LSU’s regular season schedule.

Report: Miami officials 'under the impression' Charlie Strong interested

$

0

Could Texas' Charlie Strong and Cincinnati coach Tommy Tuberville have interest in Miami's open coaching job?

According to the Miami Herald, school officials are "under the impression" they have interest in the job. Here's what the Herald had to say:

Though public denials would be expected, UM people are under the impression that Texas’ Charlie Strong and Cincinnati’s Tommy Tuberville have interest in the UM job.

Strong is considered an appealing candidate if he and Texas part ways, but that likely wouldn’t happen until after the Longhorn’s regular-season finale Dec. 5.

Strong is in his second season at Texas after replacing Mack Brown. The Longhorns are 2-1 since beating Oklahoma but the one loss came against Iowa State. Texas is currently 4-5 and plays West Virginia on Saturday.

Strong was previously the head coach at Louisville and an assistant coach at Florida before he took the job at Texas. He spent 15 years at Florida including seven as a defensive coordinator. But would Strong really be interested? While the Longhorns have struggled in his two years in charge, Miami hasn't exactly had success in that same time period either. And Texas is pretty fertile recruiting ground too. Strong clearly has Florida ties, but it's not like Miami has a substantially better recruiting base.

Tuberville seems to make more sense as a legitimate candidate. The former Auburn and Texas Tech coach moved to Cincinnati from Lubbock before the 2013 season and won nine games in each of his first two years with the Bearcats. Cincinnati is currently 5-4.

Tuberville is 61, however. Yes, he has 153 career wins as a head coach, but would Miami want a younger candidate? The Hurricanes are also reportedly open to considering Butch Davis, who coached at Miami previously. Davis is 63 and he most recently was the head coach at North Carolina before he was fired in 2011 amidst the academic scandal at the university.

Notre Dame WR Will Fuller says he's returning in 2016

$

Notre Dame star wide receiver Will Fuller said Wednesday he's not planning on heading to the NFL after the season.

He mentioned his degree as a driving force in why he wanted to stay another season.

"I knew all along that I wanted to get that degree and it's not something that I want to think about. I'm just focusing on winning one game at a time and that's it," Fuller said via BlueandGoldIllustrated.com.

Fuller is a psychology major.

"I'm going to graduate. That's what I came here for," he said.

Fuller has 44 catches for 900 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2015. He's forged a strong connection with quarterback Deshone Kizer. Fuller caught the game-winning touchdown pass from Kizer against Virginia and Kizer found him for the game-winning score against Temple. Fuller has caught a touchdown in each of Notre Dame's games except for the one.

Perhaps not-so-coincidentally, the touchdown-free game was Notre Dame's 24-22 loss to Clemson.

Fuller had 76 catches for 1,094 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2014 after having six catches in 2013. If and when he's drafted, he's a likely early-round pick in the NFL draft.

Bowling Green headed to 3rd-straight MAC Championship Game

$

0

Bowling Green is going to Detroit in December for the third-straight year.

The Falcons clinched a berth in the MAC Championship Game Wednesday night with a 41-27 win over Western Michigan in Kalamazoo. Bowling Green, 8-2, has a three-game lead on every other team in the MAC East with two games to play thanks to Buffalo's loss to Northern Illinois on Wednesday.

The Falcons jumped out to a 14-3 lead early against the Broncos but quickly relinquished it after two-straight WMU scores. The 17-14 lead was WMU's last lead of the night.

After WMU tied the game at 27 early in the third quarter, Travis Greene scored his second and third touchdowns of the night. A 26-yard run gave Bowling Green a 34-27 lead and a five-yard run later in the third provided the winning margin.

Greene finished with 23 carries for 167 yards while Matt Johnson "only" had 269 passing yards. It was Johnson's lowest passing output of the season.

The game against the Broncos could be a preview for the MAC title game. The loss was Western Michigan's first of the year in the MAC and drops the Broncos to a three-way tie for first in the West with Northern Illinois and Toledo. Those two teams are the final two remaining on WMU's schedule.

Or, the MAC title game could be the rubber match in a best-of-three series between BGSU and NIU. The Huskies and Falcons have split the last two years and NIU currently has the head-to-head tiebreaker over Toledo thanks to an upset win last week.

The loss dropped Toledo from the ranks of the unbeaten and likely dropped the MAC from any New Year's Six consideration. Yes, Bowling Green has wins over Maryland and Purdue and could finish the season 11-2 if it wins the MAC. But one of its two losses on the season came to Memphis, a team in the AAC that's fighting with Navy and Houston for the right to be the highest-ranked team from the conference in the College Football Playoff rankings. While Bowling Green is fun to watch and would be an intriguing matchup in a big bowl game, the 44-41 loss to the Tigers prevents any realistic thought of it happening.

Oregon State dismisses WR Datrin Guyton

(AP Photo/Timothy J. Gonzalez)Oregon State has dismissed a promising young receiver from its program.

The school announced earlier this week that redshirt freshman Datrin Guyton is no longer with the program due to a “violation of athletic department and team rules.” Beavers head coach Gary Andersen provided no specifics during his weekly press conference.

“I wish it wasn’t this way, but it is that way,” Andersen said per The Oregonian. “I’m excited for his future when he decides where he wants to go, and I’m here to help him. I’m not excited that he’s not with us. He is a good kid. It is what it is.

“That’s really what I have to say on it, other than the fact that I am going to help him get to his next spot, because I think he can be successful. Kids make mistakes. That’s where we’re at.”

The 6-foot-5, 182-pound Guyton was third on the team with 14 catches for 178 yards this season. He made three starts on the season and had back-to-back four-catch performances against Colorado and Utah in October. He did not have a catch in the Beavers’ loss to UCLA over the weekend.

With the UCLA loss, Oregon State is now 2-7 (0-6 Pac-12) on the season heading into Saturday’s at Cal.

2 Northwestern linemen granted sixth seasons by NCAA

(Photo by Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)Northwestern will return two experienced linemen for their sixth seasons in 2016.

The program announced that offensive lineman Shane Mertz and defensive lineman C.J. Robbins were both granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA.

Mertz had mostly been a reserve for the Wildcats until making six starts at guard this season. Overall in his career, the 6-foot-8, 310-pound Mertz has appeared in 22 games. He redshirted his first year on campus in 2011 and then missed all of 2012 with an injury, which allows him to return for the 2016 season.

Robbins has been a regular on the Wildcats’ defensive line over the past three seasons. In 30 career appearances and 16 starts – including eight this year – Robbins has totaled 27 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks. Like Mertz, Robbins redshirted the 2011 season and then missed the entire 2012 campaign due to injury.

Northwestern, which jumped up No. 18 in the most recent College Football Playoff rankings, hosts Purdue on Saturday. The Wildcats improved to 7-2 (3-2 Big Ten) with a 23-21 win over Penn State last Saturday.

Virginia Tech to wear Frank Beamer helmet decals for rest of season (Photos)

Virginia Tech came up with a cool way to honor Frank Beamer as he finishes his final season as the Hokies’ head coach.

The program announced on social media Wednesday night that special decals have been added to the back of the team's helmets for the rest of the 2015 season.

The decal features seven stars to represent the four ACC titles and three Big East titles Virginia Tech has won with Beamer as head coach. Additionally, the decal reflects a photo taken of Beamer addressing the crowd after the Hokies finished off an undefeated season in 1999.

Coming off a bye week, the 4-5 Hokies will debut the decals when they face Georgia Tech on the road on Thursday night. After the Georgia Tech game, Virginia Tech plays North Carolina in Beamer's final home game on Nov. 21 before finishing out the regular season on the road at Virginia on Nov. 28.

Tech needs to win two of those three games to become bowl eligible and continue the program’s streak of appearing in the postseason every season since 1993. Beamer, in his 29th season at the helm, has a 234-120-2 record at Virginia Tech.

Two weeks after Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, dash cam video of Barrett’s interaction with Columbus police has emerged.

TMZ Sports published the video on Thursday, and it shows Barrett intentionally pull out of a line of vehicles approaching a DUI checkpoint. After Barrett was pulled over, an officer says he smells alcohol on Barrett’s breath, despite Barrett’s claims that he had nothing to drink.

Barrett is shown completing field sobriety tests and being placed under arrest for OVI. As an officer places him into the back of the police vehicle, Barrett mentions that he is Ohio State’s quarterback and asks, “There’s nothing you can do?”

The officer tells him he won’t take him to jail and is later heard telling another officer that Cardale Jones, Ohio State’s other star quarterback, will pick up Barrett. According to police, Barrett’s blood-alcohol content was 0.099, which is above the legal limit of 0.08.

Barrett, 20, pled guilty to a misdemeanor OVI charge and had his driver’s license suspended for 180 days by a judge on Tuesday morning. He was also given a $400 fine and has to complete an alcohol education program.

Barrett was suspended for Ohio State’s win over Minnesota last Saturday, but is expected to start Saturday at Illinois for the 9-0 Buckeyes.

(AP Photo/Eli Lucero)Wake Forest has suspended defensive tackle Josh Banks for the rest of the season, the program announced Thursday.

Demon Deacons head coach Dave Clawson said the suspension was for a violation of team rules.

“I am disappointed this has occurred,” Clawson said per the Winston-Salem Journal. “Hopefully this becomes a teachable moment for Josh and the other players in our program who will benefit in the long run.”

Banks, a redshirt junior, has started 21 consecutive games for Wake Forest. Through nine games this season, Banks has 24 tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack and one fumble recovery.

Banks was an honorable mention All-ACC selection in 2014 when he compiled 36 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, one interception, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble. He also had 13 tackles, two tackles for loss and two sacks as a redshirt freshman in 2013.

He will miss the team’s final three games at Notre Dame on Saturday, at Clemson on Nov. 21 and against Duke at home on Nov. 28. The Demon Deacons are 3-6 (1-5 ACC) this season.

Breathe easy, TCU fans: Josh Doctson will play Saturday (Update)

(AP Photo/Sue Ogrocki)Breathe easy, TCU fans. It appears wide receiver Josh Doctson is not out for the season.

After conducting an interview with Horned Frogs coach Gary Patterson on Thursday afternoon, Sirius XM host Chris Childers sent out a tweet that said, "Gary Patterson just said star WR Josh Doctson is out for the rest of the season."

The news of Doctson's supposed status spread quickly, but Childers soon deleted his tweet and said he and others at Sirius may have misunderstood Patterson.

Soon after, ESPN's Jake Trotter and Fox Sports' Bruce Feldman reached out to Patterson, who confirmed the miscommunication.

Patterson later confirmed on his own Twitter account that Doctson will return to action on Saturday.

Doctson injured his wrist after making a catch late in the first half in TCU’s loss to Oklahoma State when an OSU defender fell onto his wrist as he was being tackled, causing it to bend awkwardly. Doctson received x-rays during halftime and did not return to the game.

According to the Star-Telegram, Doctson practiced in a limited capacity on Wednesday. Patterson said earlier in the week that Doctson was scheduled to see a specialist on Tuesday to assess the injury.

Doctson has 78 catches for 1,315 yards and 14 touchdowns this season, all single-season records for the program. Additionally, Doctson has set TCU records for career receiving yards (2.773) and touchdown catches (29) this season. He is also two catches shy of Kelly Blackwell’s program record for career receptions (181).

Doctson put up these impressive numbers in only three seasons at TCU, where he transferred after playing at Wyoming as a freshman.

TCU, now 8-1 and No. 13 in the College Football Playoff rankings, hosts winless Kansas this weekend.

Colorado AD: Mike MacIntyre will return as coach in 2016

(Photo by Doug Pensinger/Getty Images)Mike MacIntyre has a 10-24 record in his three seasons as Colorado’s head coach. Despite the lackluster record, Colorado athletic director Rick George told the school’s official website that MacIntyre will be back on the sidelines in 2016.

“I’ve said it publicly several times: Mike MacIntyre is going to be our head coach next year,” George said. “There’s really nothing to discuss. I’ve said it several times, and nothing has changed. People have asked and I’ve said the same thing: Mike’s going to be our coach.”

The Buffs are 4-6 through 10 games this season, an improvement over the team’s 2-10 mark in 2014. Additionally, MacIntyre’s team has been much more competitive in Pac-12 play, including a win over Oregon State and single-digit losses to Arizona and UCLA.

The Buffs went 4-8 in MacIntyre’s first season with the program in 2013 and have three more chances to top that win total this season with upcoming games against USC, Washington State and Utah.

George was also asked about the recent athletic director opening at Illinois, George’s alma mater. George, who played football for the Illini and spent time with the program as a recruiting coordinator, told the website that he hasn’t heard from anyone at Illinois.

“Nobody has called me and I haven’t talked to anyone,” George said. “I’d be lying if I didn’t say at one point in my life being AD at Illinois wasn’t my dream job. But I love it here at Colorado and I’m excited about what we’ve accomplished since I’ve been here as well as what the immediate future holds. But I ust think it’s way too early to be talking about anything right now in that regard.”

George has been Colorado’s athletic director since July 2013.
