Wisconsin running back Corey Clement suffered a cut on his hand during an incident at his off-campus residence last Sunday, according to a release by the school.

Clement was walking back to his home when he saw a group of individuals engaged in a dispute with a security guard. Clement went to help and the individuals assaulted both him and the security guard, leaving Clement with a cut hand.

The school did not say whether a weapon was present nor did it note the extent of the injury.

Clement did not practice Wednesday as he continues to rehab from sport hernia surgery. The school did not say whether Clement would miss any time as a result of the cut.

Wisconsin has a bye this week and will host Northwestern next Saturday.

Elon WRDemitri Allison (elon.edu)An Elon University football player died Tuesday afternoon after falling from a 10-story dorm on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus.

According to a note to students on the Elon University website, junior wide receiver Demitri Allison left campus on Tuesday and “his teammates, friends and family asked police to look for him because they were concerned for his well-being and emotional state.”

The investigation into the incident is ongoing and it is unknown from which floor Allison fell.

Allison played in all nine games for Elon this season, catching 12 passes for 123 yards.

“Everyone associated with Elon athletics is devastated,” athletics director Dave Blank said in a statement. “Demitri was a talented young man with a bright future who was loved by his teammates. We mourn his loss deeply and we pray for his family and loved ones.”

Everett Golson will return to his role as Florida State’s starting quarterback against N.C. State this weekend, coach Jimbo Fisher announced Thursday.

Golson, a transfer from Notre Dame, started the first seven games of the season before suffering a concussion on Oct. 24 against Georgia Tech. Golson missed the last two games while recovering from those symptoms.

Junior Sean Maguire started in his place and led the Seminoles to a win against Syracuse and a loss to No. 1 Clemson.

Golson has completed 67.2 percent of his passes for 1,659 yards, 11 touchdowns and just one interception.

Virginia Tech defeats Georgia Tech 23-21, ends GT's 18-season bowl streak

It was just a few months ago that the ACC media picked Georgia Tech to be the Coastal Division champion.

On Thursday, the Yellow Jackets secured a losing season.

Virginia Tech defeated Georgia Tech 23-21 to earn its fifth victory and give the Yellow Jackets their seventh loss.

It marked the first losing season for Georgia Tech since 2010 and the first bowl-less season since 1996.

It’s a stunning turn of a events for a team that many considered a favorite to the ACC and a potential dark horse to contend for one of the four coveted spots in the College Football Playoff.

The season started well enough for the Yellow Jackets with relatively easy wins against Alcorn State and Tulane, but then a loss to Notre Dame sent the team into a tailspin as Georgia Tech proceeded to lose five consecutive games.

A late win against Florida State seemed to have the potential to change the Yellow Jackets’ season and keep their bowl streak intact, but a loss to Virginia on Halloween painted a bleak picture where the Yellow Jackets would have to win out to at least go 6-6.

On Thursday, Georgia Tech seemed fired up to do just that.

It scored on its first possession and jumped out to a 14-0 in the first quarter, but Virginia Tech responded with two touchdown before halftime.

At the beginning of the third quarter, Georgia Tech once against showed fight after Brant Mitchel picked off Michael Brewer during Virginia Tech’s opening possession of the half and ran it back 32 yards for the go-ahead score.

Virginia Tech cut the lead on its next possession with an 29-yard field goal and took the lead on a run by Travon McMillian, who had 24 carries for 135 yards and two touchdowns on the night, with less than seven minutes remaining. However, Joey Slye missed the extra point, opening the door for a Georgia Tech win with a field goal.

But Georgia Tech couldn’t get anything going on offense as the Virginia Tech defense clamped down and held the option offense in check.

For Virginia Tech, the Hokies are one win away from sending coach Frank Beamer off with a postseason berth with games against North Carolina and Virginia remaining.

Georgia Tech will face Miami and Georgia to finish out its season.

Purdue AD: Darrell Hazell returning in 2016

$

0

Purdue won't be making a coaching change after the season.

Athletic director Morgan Burke said Thursday on Big Ten Network Live that the team feels coach Darrell Hazell is the right person to continue to lead the program. Hazell, hired before the 2013 season from Kent State, is 6-27 in his Purdue coaching tenure. He needs two more wins in 2015 to surpass his 3-9 record in 2014.

Burke's comments echo what Yahoo Sports reported last week.

"We think that Darrell Hazell is the right guy to lead the program," Burke said via GoldandBlack.com. "I know social media and others have tried to determine whether Darrell is going to be here in 2016. We're not in this for the short term. We want to build a plan. This is something that the President and the Chairman of the Board joined in their support for Darrell. We've still got work to do but we can see some things in the pipeline, just like your (BTN) analysts can see, that will allow Purdue to return to a very successful level. We're not a very patient world - I'm not very patient myself - but at the end of the day you're building the right thing, you've got to stick with the plan."

The school is also in the midst of a renovation to the athletic facilities set to be complete in 2017. It's a $60 million renovation.

Hazell's biggest win at Purdue was likely two weeks ago, when the Boilermakers beat Nebraska at home. He was a head coach at Kent State for two seasons and was 11-3 in his final year with the team.

He replaced Danny Hope at Purdue. Hope was the team's coach for four seasons following the retirement of Joe Tiller and the Boilermakers went to bowls in each of Hope's final two seasons. Yes, that means Hazell has as many wins in 2+ years at Purdue than Hope had in his last year.

“When we hired [Hazell] in 2013, we recognized this was not going to be an easy undertaking. That’s why we gave him a six-year agreement,” Burke said. “From a win-loss perspective, nobody is happy right now; we’re disappointed but despite the losses and the inconsistent play progress is being made.”

UCLA wearing cool Navy SEAL tribute helmets Saturday (Photos)

UCLA is wearing some cool helmets Saturday against Washington State.

The game is UCLA's Military Appreciation game (and also the last UCLA home game of the season). In honor of the event, UCLA is wearing its alternate uniforms with a matte black helmet that's a tribute to the Navy SEALs.

(Upon further inspection we determined they looked black. They looked dark blue at first and second glance.)

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

It's probably the matte making us swoon, but these helmets look awesome.

UCLA needs to beat Washington State to continue to control its own destiny in the Pac-12 South. If the Bruins beat the Cougars and also beat Utah and USC, UCLA wins the Pac-12 South and would get a likely rematch with Stanford in the Pac-12 title game.

Report: No, Charlie Strong is not interested in Miami job

$

After a report said Miami officials believed Charlie Strong would be interested in the school's open head coaching position, another report says Strong has no interest.

The Dallas Morning News cited a source who said Strong would not consider moving to Miami Thursday afternoon.

But the source indicated that Strong, who strongly denied interest initially, has not changed his mind. Strong is "very happy" at Texas, the source said.

Strong, a former Florida assistant, has direct ties to the area so it's logical his name would be mentioned even if it doesn't make much sense. Strong was hired at Texas before the 2014 season and there haven't been any public statements of a lack of support after the school parted ways with athletic director Steve Patterson.

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

Don't be surprised if this isn't the last mention of Strong and Miami together despite Strong's denial. Remember the Nick Saban and Texas rumors in late 2013 before Strong was hired? Strong-to-Miami may not be in the same class as the persistent Saban chatter, but we have a feeling this may not completely go away until Miami hires a new coach. A coach who likely isn't named Charlie Strong.

Texas is 4-5 in 2015 and plays West Virginia on Saturday.

Athlon Sports' 5 teams that could be CFP spoilers

$

The College Football Playoff selection committee’s top 25 rankings are the biggest source of discussion and criticism among fans and media after their release on Tuesday nights. While the rankings are important to show where teams stand relative to the other contenders, as well as how the committee is evaluating different teams, it’s important to remember that the top 25 is going to change significantly by Dec. 6.

With four weeks of games remaining, college football is due for a few upsets. Which teams could play spoiler and end the playoff hopes of some of the leading contenders after Week 10? Here are five teams to watch the rest of 2015:

Michigan (7-2)

High expectations surrounded Jim Harbaugh’s return to Ann Arbor, and the first-year coach has the Wolverines sitting at 7-2 and in position to play in one of college football’s top bowl games. Michigan should be favored in upcoming matchups against Indiana and Penn State, with the regular season finale at Ohio State looming large. Assuming the Buckeyes defeat Illinois on Nov. 14 and Michigan State on Nov. 21, coach Urban Meyer’s team will take a 31-game winning streak in Big Ten play to Ann Arbor. The Wolverines are a work in progress on offense with an average of 5.4 yards per play in Big Ten matchups, but the defense leads the conference by holding opponents to just 11.9 points a game. Harbaugh’s defense also leads the Big Ten in fewest third-down conversions allowed and ranks third nationally in rush defense. After losing three in a row to the Buckeyes, Michigan will be hungry to spoil the season of its bitter rival.

Mississippi State (7-2)

The Bulldogs were picked by most to finish last in the challenging SEC West, but coach Dan Mullen has relied on the right arm and legs of senior quarterback Dak Prescott to guide Mississippi State back in contention for a 10-win season. Prescott is the SEC’s top quarterback, throwing for 2,351 yards and 18 scores and rushing for 418 yards and seven touchdowns through nine games. Prescott needs more help from his rushing attack and offensive line, but the senior has one of the SEC’s top receiving corps. Coordinator Manny Diaz returned to Starkville after four years away and has helped Mississippi State’s defense reload after returning only three starters. The Bulldogs are giving up 5.2 yards per play and rank fourth in the conference by holding opponents to 17.2 points a game. It’s a longshot, but Mississippi State is still alive in the SEC West title picture. To keep those slim West Division title hopes alive, the Bulldogs have to upset Alabama on Saturday. The Crimson Tide are coming off a huge win in a physical affair against LSU and have to quickly refocus for a tricky road trip to Starkville. A win by Mississippi State on Saturday would have huge implications in the playoff picture.

North Carolina (8-1)

The Tar Heels have reeled off eight wins in a row after losing to South Carolina 17-13 in the season opener. Coach Larry Fedora’s team is in control of the Coastal Division and could clinch this Saturday with a win, combined with a Duke victory over Pittsburgh. As usual, the offense is a strength under Fedora. North Carolina ranks second nationally with an average of 7.6 yards per play, quarterback Marquise Williams is second in the ACC with 297.2 total yards per game, and freshman running back Elijah Hood is having a standout season with 813 yards and 11 scores in nine games. While the offense is explosive, the difference in North Carolina’s run at the Coastal title in 2015 is its defense. The addition of new coordinator Gene Chizik has paid huge dividends for Fedora’s team, as this unit has made significant strides. The Tar Heels are limiting ACC opponents to 5.3 yards per play, down from 6.3 in 2014. Additionally, Chizik’s defense has surrendered only 11 plays of 30 yards or more. With an explosive offense and an improving defense, North Carolina could give Clemson trouble in the ACC Championship.

Related: Baylor vs. Oklahoma Preview and Prediction

Texas (4-5)

The final Saturday in the regular season shouldn’t be short on drama as teams make their final pitch to the committee for a playoff spot. If – and it’s a big if – Baylor can run the table in November and defeat Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and TCU, the Dec. 5 matchup against Texas could determine whether or not coach Art Briles’ team makes the playoff or just misses for the second year in a row. On paper, Baylor should be a heavy favorite against Texas. However, coach Charlie Strong and coordinator Vance Bedford have experienced some success in slowing down the high-powered Bears’ offense. In 2013, the Longhorns limited Baylor to 30 points and 5.5 yards per play (third-lowest mark of the season). Last year, Texas held the Bears to 28 points and just 4.7 yards per play. The personnel is different for the Longhorns’ defense, but this unit has not allowed more than 234 passing yards in each of its last four games. Additionally, Texas can control the pace of the game with an offense averaging 227.8 rushing yards per game in Big 12 contests. It’s a long shot, but the season finale could determine whether or not the Longhorns go to a bowl. If that’s the case, Texas will have plenty of motivation on Dec. 5 in Waco.

Related: Post-Week 10 Bowl Projections

UCLA (7-2)/USC (6-3)

The Pac-12 South title is a three-team race with three weeks remaining until Championship Saturday. Utah is the clear favorite at 5-1 in league play, but USC and UCLA are both positioned to make a run at 4-2. The Trojans also own a critical tiebreaker over the Utes thanks to a head-to-head win on Oct. 24. The Bruins will have their shot at Utah on Nov. 21 in Salt Lake City, followed by a road test at USC on Nov. 28. For USC or UCLA to play spoiler, it needs some help. Utah has to lose once – UCLA on Nov. 21 is the most-likely outcome – and the Bruins or Trojans have to win out and play Stanford in the Pac-12 Championship. If the Cardinal defeats Notre Dame on Nov. 28, there’s a good chance for David Shaw’s team moves to No. 4 in the committee rankings. While Stanford would be favored over UCLA and USC, both teams would have revenge on their mind after losing to the Cardinal already in the regular season.

Texas A&M sues Indianapolis Colts over '12th Man'

Texas A&M has set its legal sights on another NFL team.

The school filed suit Thursday against the Indianapolis Colts for the Colts' usage of "12th Man" in team promotions. The Colts asked prospective season ticket holders to "Join the 12th Man" in a promotional email per ESPN.

The school says the Colts have been ignoring requests dating back to a 2006 cease and desist letter to not use the term, which is trademarked by Texas A&M.

"Texas A&M University is the Home of the 12th Man which has brought our fan base national renown," Texas A&M University President Michael K. Young said in a statement via the Dallas Morning News. "We would prefer not to file lawsuits to protect our trademarks. However, when our intellectual property, especially the 12th Man mark which is so important to our students and former students, is used without our permission after repeated attempts to engage on the matter, we are left with no choice."

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

A&M previously filed a lawsuit against the Seattle Seahawks in 2006 for the Seahawks use of the term. The two parties agreed to a settlement effective for 10 years and the school has given the Seahawks specific uses of the phrase.

If you're unfamiliar with the 12th Man legend in Texas A&M lore, here's a brief description from the school:

The tradition of the Twelfth Man was born on the second of January 1922, when an underdog Aggie team was playing Centre College, then the nation's top ranked team. As the hard fought game wore on, and the Aggies dug deeply into their limited reserves, Coach Dana X. Bible remembered a squad man who was not in uniform. He had been up in the press box helping reporters identify players. His name was E. King Gill, and was a former football player who was only playing basketball. Gill was called from the stands, suited up, and stood ready throughout the rest of the game, which A&M finally won 22-14. When the game ended, E. King Gill was the only man left standing on the sidelines for the Aggies. Gill later said, "I wish I could say that I went in and ran for the winning touchdown, but I did not. I simply stood by in case my team needed me."

The Aggies also traditionally have had a little-used player wear No. 12 and play on the kickoff team. Defensive back Sam Moeller, a senior, has worn No. 12 for Texas A&M since the 2013 season and plays on many of the Aggies' special teams units.

What to Watch, Week 11: The spotlight's on you, Big 12

$
0
0

The final fourth of the regular season is upon us and there’s still much that has yet to be decided.

The conference with the biggest gripe is the Big 12, but its time in the spotlight is coming and its teams have a chance to work their way into the playoff conversation.

Similarly, the SEC West is a bit muddy, the Pac-12 still has intrigue and the contest for the New Years Six Bowl among the Group of Five programs will come down to the wire.

It’s week’s like this that make college football fun.

Here’s what to watch in Week 11:

Game of the week:
No. 2 Alabama at No. 17 Mississippi State, 3:30 p.m. ET
Alabama is coming off an emotional win against LSU — a win that moved the Tide from No. 4 in the College Football Playoff rankings to No. 2 — and now it has to figure out a way to keep that momentum going this week against a deceptively good Mississippi State team.

"Any time you have an emotional win, you've got to get your team to respond the right way and make sure that they're focused on what they need to do to play just as well the next week or better," coach Nick Saban said.

A week after the Alabama defense successfully stopped running back Leonard Fournette, it now has the unenviable task of limiting Bulldogs’ quarterback Dak Prescott, who has come on of late. He’s thrown for more than 300 yards in each of his last three games and 10 touchdown passes. He’s also added 198 yards and four scores on the ground. Prescott has only thrown one interception this season, which should present a formidable challenge for an Alabama defense that picked him off three times last season.

A year ago, Alabama ruined Mississippi State’s chance at a spot in the College Football Playoff. Now, it’s an opportunity for the Bulldogs to exact some payback.

Game to Watch:
No. 12 Oklahoma at No. 6 Baylor, 8 p.m. ET

The Big 12’s unintentionally backloaded schedule provides us another gem this weekend with two teams that are still fighting for a spot in the Top 4.

No. 6 Baylor is undefeated but continues to get leapfrogged for a potential playoff spot by other teams with better schedules. However, No. 12 Oklahoma marks the Bears’ first ranked team this season and it’s an opportunity to crack that Top 4.

Baylor showed that it’s passing offense doesn’t slow with fresh-faced starter Jarrett Stidham, but the rushing offense that had been so integral to Baylor’s success earlier in the season was not as prolific as it was with Seth Russell under center.

On the other side, Oklahoma has a long shot of making the CFP, but it does have a shot. It’s loss to Texas is probably the worst loss among the teams vying for playoff contention, but the Sooners do play three ranked teams in consecutive weeks.

Oklahoma has been on an offensive tear, scoring at least 50 points in each of its last four contests. However, in its last two games against Baylor, the Bears have outscored the Sooners 89-26.

"The way we've been playing, you have to feel confident — the way we've been executing, really, in all parts of the game," Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said. "As much as anything, we're playing together as a team. The offense has been moving the ball and putting pressure on the other team, the way they're scoring and moving the ball, and defensively, coming up with pressure and turnovers and a lot of good stops. We've got to play that way Saturday."

Also check out…
No. 21 Memphis at No. 24 Houston, 7 p.m. ET

Houston is the only remaining undefeated team in the American Athletic Conference and its final stretch of games, which begins with Saturday’s contest against Memphis, will test whether it deserves the Group of Five spot in a New Years Six Bowl.

"We understand that this is the meat of our schedule, and most of the games down the stretch here are going to be like this," Houston coach Tom Herman said. "For us to take the first step here was important for us."

This should be a fun contest between two AAC teams that rank in the top 10 in the FBS in scoring and total yards. Houston quarterback Greg Ward Jr., averages 92.1 rushing yards per game, which is second only to Navy’s Keenan Reynolds for quarterbacks. Ward's rushing ability, coupled with running back Kenneth Farrow, might be able to take advantage of a Memphis defense that allowed 374 yards and five touchdowns on the ground in the loss to Navy last weekend.

The Houston defense will have to contend with Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch, who is averaging 352.1 passing yards a game. Houston allowed Cincinnati to pass for 523 yards and four touchdowns in last week’s win.

Channel surf through…

SMU at No. 20 Navy, 3:30 ET: On paper, this game looks like Navy should skate to a win, but this is a now Navy team with the added pressure of being the Group of Five leader for a New Year’s Six Bowl. Navy’s option should give SMU fits, but don’t discount the Mustangs' ability to make this a game. Remember, both Houston and Temple struggled against the Mustangs.

Oregon at No. 7 Stanford, 7:30 ET: This game is always a fun one to watch and the fact that the Ducks have a chance to spoil Stanford’s season makes this game even more intriguing. Oregon quarterback Vernon Adams seems to get better weekly as his finger heals, but this Stanford defense will give him fits. This might be the most entertaining game of the evening.

Minnesota at No. 5 Iowa, 8 p.m. ET: Iowa is undefeated and a game away from the College Football Playoff. Is this the game the Hawkeyes choke? Come on, all season people have been waiting for Iowa to fail and it hasn’t yet happened. Minnesota is 4-5, but it’s had close losses to Michigan and Ohio State in the last couple weeks. Is this the game the Gophers get over the hump with Tracy Claeys as head coach?

Appeals court rules Gavin Class can't come back to Towson team

A federal appeals court has overruled a previous ruling allowing Towson's Gavin Class to return to the football team.

Class had a heat-releated episode during practice in August 2013. His heart and liver failed and he ended up having 14 surgeries during the course of his recovery. He was cleared to play football again by doctors at University of Maryland Medical Center and also those at the Korey Stringer Institute.

However, he had to file suit to play. Towson had said it was not safe for Class to resume football activities.

The appeals court ruled in Towson's favor on Friday. From the Baltimore Sun:

Towson correctly followed its policy governing the return to play of ailing athletes, wrote Judge Paul V. Niemeyer in his majority opinion for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in Richmond, Va.

“Giving deference to Towson University’s judgment, as we are required to do, we uphold its determination,” Niemeyer wrote.

Class had filed a disability discrimination suit against the school. A district court had ruled in his favor in July and would have allowed him to practice with the team. However, since the university appealed his decision, he hasn't been able to join the team. Class is currently a senior.

Spread Options: Dr. Saturday's Week 11 picks against the spread

$
0
0

Another .500 week took us to 49-45-6. We'd like to get to 10 games over by the end of the season.

Kansas at TCU (-45.5), Noon ET: TCU needs to start piling up the points. It's not the BCS, but the Horned Frogs need to make up for what happened on Saturday. The good news is that TCU is in a spot to do that. Losing first of all the Big 12 teams (assuming everyone ends the season with a loss) isn't necessarily the worst thing in the world. This line may be inflated because Kansas is 2-7 against the spread this year but we'll go ahead and try for TCU anyway.

Ohio State at Illinois (OVER 55), Noon ET: The Buckeyes are favored by anywhere between 15 and 16.5 points. That line seems about right for a conference road game against a team needing one more win for bowl eligibility. Illinois has enough of an offense to score a few touchdowns on Ohio State, but with J.T. Barrett back at quarterback, Ohio State should pile up the points.

Florida (-7.5) at South Carolina, Noon ET: The Gators have the East locked up. Is this a letdown game? It's probably a reason for the line being in the single digits. Yeah, Florida struggled against Vanderbilt on Saturday, but the Vanderbilt defense is very good. Better than South Carolina's. The Gamecocks should keep this one competitive, but Florida makes this a two-score game late.

Texas at West Virginia (-8.5), Noon ET: West Virginia isn't as bad as it's shown in road losses to Oklahoma, Baylor and TCU. Man, that's a brutal road stretch. This is a bounceback game for the Mountaineers after squeaking by Texas Tech on Saturday. Look for West Virginia to put up 40 or more. We're not sure Texas will keep up.

North Carolina State at Florida State (-9), 12:30 p.m. ET: Everett Golson is back for Florida State and the Seminoles have won all but one home game by 20 or more points. We're thinking N.C. State is more like Louisville than it is Miami. With Dalvin Cook and Golson, Florida State should have no problem in its ACC finale.

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

Clemson at Syracuse (+28), 3:30 p.m. ET: The Orange have had success at home against the spread. Syracuse is 5-4 overall and 4-1 at home. It includes a big number covered earlier in the year when LSU visited. The Tigers won by 10. While Clemson needs style points given the weak remaining schedule it has, Syracuse should keep this one (relatively) close. It may not be anything resembling an upset, but we don't see a four-touchdown loss here as Syracuse falls for the seventh-straight time.

Kansas State at Texas Tech (UNDER 71.5), 3:30 p.m. ET: Tech is favored by 5.5 and the total may be a few points higher than it would be otherwise because the Red Raiders have hit the over seven times already in 2015. Kansas State may be heading to a bowl-less season but the Wildcats should be able to depress the score by going as slow as possible. Remember, KSU's game against Baylor only had 55 total points.

Oklahoma State (-14) at Iowa State, 3:30 p.m. ET: After a series of not-too-impressive performances to open the season 6-0, Oklahoma State has been piling up the points. The Cowboys have hit 49 or more in the past three games and have won by 48, 17 and 20. Why should it change on Saturday? Oklahoma State is improving as the season goes on and the only danger here is if the team coasts a little bit before games vs. Baylor and Oklahoma to end the season.

Kentucky at Vanderbilt (UNDER 40), 4 p.m. ET: Here's a crazy stat. Missouri and Vanderbilt are a combined 1-16-1 on the over/under this season. Missouri has the only over and that came last week against Mississippi State. Every other team in FBS has hit the over twice or more. With Vanderbilt's defense and a Kentucky offense that has only broken 20 once in the last three games, we're confident in Vanderbilt continuing the streak.

Washington State at UCLA (OVER 65.5), 10:45 p.m. ET: Washington State's Luke Falk is quickly becoming a candidate for first-team All-Pac-12. One of his main competitors for the spot at QB is on the other side in Josh Rosen. This game could be a battle of the first team to 50, so we're taking the over here and hoping for some Pac-12 After Dark magic.

LOCKS OF THE WEEK:

Nick Bromberg (4-6) Minnesota at Iowa (-11.5), 7 p.m. ET: This line is tempting in the favor of the Gophers, but I'm taking Iowa because this is the final game in a brutal three-game stretch for Minnesota. The Gophers had an almost-win against Michigan and hung tough against Ohio State. This won't be a blowout, but I can see Minnesota tiring in the second half.

Sam Cooper (3-6-1 Temple (-2.5) at South Florida, 7 p.m. ET: Navy is getting all the talk in the AAC this week, but Temple can clinch the AAC East with a win over South Florida and still have a pretty clear path to a potential New Year’s Six bowl. The Bulls have been tough this year, but I can’t see the Owls slipping up in this one. Temple wins a close one.):

Graham Watson (2-7-1) Clemson at Syracuse (+28): Clemson is good — really good — but it’s coming off a big win against Florida State, it just won its division for the first time since 2011 and now it has to go to a mildly tough place to play. Syracuse won’t win this game, but after keeping home games against ranked LSU and Pitt games close this season, I’m willing to bet Syracuse won’t lose by 28.

Northwestern athletic facility ceremony interrupted by protesters (Photos)

Northwestern's Friday groundbreaking of its Lakefront Athletics and Recreation Complex was interrupted by student protesters.

The protests were related to the Concerned Student 1950 protests that started at Missouri last week. You can see a Concerned Student 1950 sign in one of the pictures below.

After the protests dispersed, Northwestern's president commented on their bravery.

Protests about racial inequality have spread across college campuses after the Missouri protests became a national story. Mizzou football players said they were boycotting football activities Saturday night because of a hunger strike by a protester at Mizzou. After Missouri president Tim Wolfe resigned, Jonathan Butler ended his hunger strike Monday morning and Missouri players announced they would return to football activities.

Construction is expected to begin as soon as possible on the facility, which will house the football team's new athletic headquarters upon completion.

Missouri coach Gary Pinkel to resign after season due to health issues

(Photo by Ed Zurga/Getty Images)Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel will resign following the conclusion of the 2015 season, the school announced Friday.

According to a release from the school, the decision is due to health issues. Pinkel was diagnosed with lymphoma in May. The school said he received “multiple treatments” in May and June after doctors determined that treatment “wouldn’t interfere with his coaching duties.” Once that determination was made, Pinkel decided to coach the 2015 season.

“I made the decision in May, after visiting with my family, that I wanted to keep coaching, as long as I felt good and had the energy I needed,” Pinkel said in a statement. “I felt great going into the season, but also knew that I would need to re-assess things at some point, and I set our bye week as the time when I would take stock of the future. After we played Vanderbilt (Oct. 24), I had a scheduled PET scan on Oct. 26th for reassessment, and then visited with my family and came to the decision on October 27th that this would be my last year coaching.

“I still feel good physically, but I decided that I want to focus on enjoying my remaining years with my family and friends, and also have proper time to battle the disease and give full attention to that.”

The school said Pinkel will “remain as Mizzou’s coach through December 31, 2015, or until a new head coach is in place.” Additionally, Pinkel and athletic director Mack Rhoades are “discussing a role” to keep Pinkel involved with the athletic department.

Pinkel informed the team and staff of the decision on Friday.

“It’s been an honor working with Gary since I joined the Mizzou family,” said Rhoades. “Gary is truly a coaching legend as the winningest coach at two Division I institutions while leaving a profound impact on a countless number of young men. We are extremely appreciative of all that he has done for Mizzou. It’s tough emotionally knowing that his fight with cancer is bringing his run to an end sooner than any of us thought.

"I want to commend Gary with how open he’s been with me the whole time, from the first day he came to my office in May and told me about his diagnosis, all the way to now and when he met with me personally on October 28th to tell me he’d made up his mind. He’s been nothing but first class in how he’s handled the situation the whole way.”

Pinkel clarified in his statement that he is “not doing poorly” health-wise and that the type of lymphoma he has is “manageable.”

“I want to make very clear that I’m not doing poorly, and that this is a manageable disease, but it’s one that will never go away,” Pinkel said. “So many people have bigger struggles with other forms of cancer and other serious diseases, and I feel blessed that I’ve got something I can fight and still enjoy a good quality of life.  I don’t know how many years I have left, but I want to turn my focus to life outside of the daily grind of football.

“Words can’t express how grateful I am to the University of Missouri and all of the amazing people who make it up, from the administration to the students and our fans. Obviously, I’m so appreciative to all of my coaches and athletes. Leaving them makes this decision so tough, but I do so feeling good that the Mizzou Football program is in a better place than it was when we came in 15 years ago. I feel that Mizzou is a great job at a great school and has so much going for it that they’ll find an outstanding coach to move the program forward.”

Pinkel is in his 15th season at Mizzou after previously spending 10 years at Toledo and compiling a 73-37-3 record. At Missouri, Pinkel has a 117-71 record and has guided the Tigers to five division titles, 10 bowl game appearances and five Top 20 rankings. He also guided Missouri through its transition from the Big 12 to the SEC and won back-to-back SEC East titles in 2013 and 2014.

With 190 total wins, Pinkel is the 19th-winningest coach in FBS history.

This year’s team started 4-1 but is now 4-5 after dropping its last four contests in conference play. The Tigers play BYU on Saturday in Kansas City before finishing out the season at home against Tennessee on Nov. 21 and at Arkansas on Nov. 27.

Pinkel offered support for his players earlier this week when they decided to boycott football activities until graduate student Jonathan Butler, who was on a hunger strike until UM System President Tim Wolfe stepped down, resumed eating. The boycott and protests were in response to series of racist incidents on campus in recent months.

Wolfe resigned on Monday and Missouri returned to practice on Tuesday.

BOULDER, CO - NOVEMBER 13: Quarterback Sefo Liufau #13 of the Colorado Buffaloes goes down with a foot injury against the USC Trojans at Folsom Field on November 13, 2015 in Boulder, Colorado. (Photo by Justin Edmonds/Getty Images)Not only did Colorado drop a close one to USC on Friday night, it lost starting quarterback Sefo Liufau for the rest of the season in the process.

After the game, Buffs head coach Mike MacIntyre told reporters that Liufau suffered a fractured left foot when he was sacked on the last play of the first quarter. The injury, a Lisfranc fracture, will keep him out for six to eight months and require surgery.

Before leaving the game, Liufau was 6-for-8 for 94 yards and helped give CU an early lead.

“It was tough, because he was hot,” MacIntyre said per BuffZone.com. “I knew it (Wednesday and Thursday) he was going to have a great day. I felt for him because he’s taken a little bit of heat and this was going to kind of he his time.”

With Luifau out, redshirt freshman Cade Apsay took over and led the Buffs to a 17-6 halftime lead. However, USC stormed back in the second half and won the game 27-24.

Apsay, in his first significant game action, completed 18-of-23 passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns.

Colorado dropped to 4-7 (1-6 Pac-12) with the loss with games at Washington State and Utah still on the schedule.

TCU QB Trevone Boykin leaves Kansas game with injury (GIF)

TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin limped to the locker room at the beginning of the second quarter of his team's game against Kansas on Saturday. He likely won't return to the game, per coach Gary Patterson, reportedly with a high ankle sprain.

Boykin took a couple of awkward hits in the first quarter. His right ankle was taped before the game and it twisted underneath his body as he was tackled.

And he also got hit from behind after making a pass.

He was replaced by backup quarterback Bram Kohlhausen and returned to the sidelines midway through the second quarter.

Boykin was considered a top candidate for the Heisman Trophy until TCU lost to Oklahoma State in Week 10. The former part-time wide receiver has become one of the best quarterbacks in college football over the past two seasons as TCU's offense has racked up yardage. Boykin has thrown for 29 touchdowns and run for eight in 2015.

TCU, a 45-point favorite, entered halftime tied at 10-10 with Kansas and ended up winning 23-17.

Georgia player dazed after slap to the helmet by coach (Video)

Georgia's Rico McGraw was down on the ground briefly after he was smacked in the helmet by a Georgia assistant.

The team was celebrating after forcing an Auburn punt late in the third quarter. And this happened to McGraw, a defensive back.

Given Georgia's three losses and the rumors surrounding the team and the coaching staff in 2015, this unfortunate incident kind of goes with the theme, doesn't it? Thankfully McGraw was shown by the CBS cameras up and talking to his teammates shortly after the hit and he returned to the game.

After trailing 10-3, Georgia scored 17 straight points to take a 20-10 lead and won the game 20-13.

West Virginia was quite excited about its 38-20 win over Texas.

After the game, Mountaineers freshman defensive lineman Adam Shuler posted a video of the locker room celebration, which featured head coach Dana Holgorsen crowd surfing. Hilarious.

The win is the second in a row for West Virginia after the team dropped four in a row earlier in the season.

The Mountaineers are now 5-4 on the season with games against Kansas, Iowa State and Kansas State still on the schedule.

On the other side, Texas dropped to 4-6 with the loss. The Longhorns will need to knock off Texas Tech and Baylor in order to play in a bowl game this season.
