A man who was a part of a crew working on the renovation of Texas A&M’s Kyle Field died Tuesday after falling four stories at the construction site.
In a statement released Tuesday evening, Texas A&M spokesperson Steve Moore confirmed the identity of the man to be Angel Garcia, 25, an employee with the Dallas-based company Lindamood Demolition. Moore confirmed that Garcia fell from the fourth level of the northeast end of the stadium.
“The thoughts and prayers of all of us at the A&M System and within the Bryan and College Station community are with the Garcia family,” Texas A&M System Chancellor John Sharp said.
The Bryan-College Station Eagle reports that it is unclear whether the incident would affect the progress of the work on Kyle Field and that because Garcia was working for a subcontractor, the jurisdiction of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) may supersede Texas A&M’s policies.
“Texas A&M University does not fall directly under OSHA jurisdiction,” Breeding said. “Generally in a fatality, OSHA may come in under an advisory capacity,” said A&M Engineering Safety Department manager David Breeding.
Officials from the University Police Department and safety operators for Manhattan-Vaughn Construction, the contractor, were already conducting an investigation as of Tuesday afternoon.
The $450 million renovation of the stadium began Nov. 9 after the regular season concluded and the first phase is supposed to be ready for the first home game of the 2014, Sept. 6 against Lamar University.
