A BCS National Championship game billed to be an offensive shootout has featured fantastic defense from both sides thus far, but Auburn finally broke through for the game’s first touchdown late in the first quarter.

Florida State opened the scoring with a 35-yard Robert Aguayo field goal to give the Seminoles a 3-0 lead, but after an Auburn punt pinned the Seminoles deep, the field position battle switched in Auburn’s favor. The Tigers forced three-and-out and a great return by Chris Davis gave the Tigers starting field position at the Florida State 25-yard line.

The Tigers needed just six plays to score when Nick Marshall found star running back Tre Mason for a 12-yard touchdown pass to take a 7-3 lead.

With the Auburn crowd growing loud, the Tigers defense forced a Florida State three-and-out on the next series, but the Seminoles’ drive stayed alive after a roughing the kicker call on Johnathan Ford.

The penalty did not prove costly however, after the Auburn defense forced another punt.
