(Navy Football)Navy defensive coordinator Buddy Green is taking some time away from his on-field coaching duties.

Midshipmen head coach Ken Niumatalolo told the Capital Gazette that Green, who had major neck surgery during the summer, will “step away” from coaching. Niumatalolo said Green needs to focus on “proper rehabilitation.”

"Buddy has been in major, major pain. He's tried to tough it out, but we all can tell he is hurting physically," Niumatalolo said. "Buddy wouldn't say anything. If you asked him how he was doing he would say he was fine. But those of us who are around Buddy all day could see he was in severe pain."

Niumatalolo said Green, who has been the team’s defensive coordinator since 2002, can rejoin the staff next season if he’s healthy.

From the Gazette:

Green is not retiring and Niumatalolo said he would rejoin the staff next year if he's healthy and wants to continue coaching. Green will serve as a consultant this season, evaluating film and helping prepare game plans.

While Green is away, longtime defensive line coach Dale Pehrson will assume defensive coordinator duties on an interim basis. Pehrson has been with the program since 1996.

Navy went 8-5 in 2014, including a Poinsettia Bowl win over San Diego State. The Midshipmen open their 2015 season at home against Colgate on Sept. 5.
